AHEAD OF JEWELS DAY 2015…..
I like Australians.
Well, not all Australians. Like not some of their cricket team. But classless slegdgers aside, I find many
Australians good company.
They are a little brasher, talkative with bigger egos
that most New Zealanders.
Which probably explains why I like them so much.
But my love of the noisy, sometimes drunken race
who love a punt isn’t the reason I am glad they will
have six reps (if you include Messini) in the Jewels
this Saturday.
It is because the fact Australians often have that
ego, that confidence or are simply plain stubborn
that you often don’t know what they are going
to do, especially when the blood gets boiling in a
group one race.
One of the most common criticisms of our best races of how often they are dominated by favourites,
who simply stroll to the lead --- often in brilliant
blue colours --- and win.
Aussie aggression often makes for good racing and
that makes for doubt, not only in rival driver’s minds
but punters.
Which means while you and I might think we know
what is going to happen in the early stages of some
of the Jewels races on Saturday, there is that Aussie
factor.
Surely The Orange Agent leads and controls the
Diamond, like she did in the Nevele R Fillies Final at
Addington three weeks ago?
But, will Glenferrie Bronte do what she did in the
Victoria Oaks and attack, bringing the others into
the race?
After the toweling he got in the slush at Addington surely Salty Robyn will hand up to a Chase The
Dream or Lazarus this time?
But will the Tritton-Panella team go with the same
philosophy that has got them this far in life --- you
have to break a few eggs to make an omelette?
I don’t know. And that is good because that means
you probably don’t know either.
But boring and visiting Aussies hardly ever go in the
same sentence.
And all of a sudden we have horse races, not processions.
Just think of Bruce Harpley and Frith having the audacity to park out Adore Me in the Ladyship Mile at
Menangle on March 1.
The Aussie six, accompanied by names like Turnbull, Gath and Fitzpatrick, will enormously increase
awareness of our great day in the massive punting
market that is Australia. That argument has been
won and lost long ago and the naysayers simply
haven’t done their research.
What was he thinking?
He was thinking “I gonna have a go here” and what
we all got was a 1:47.7 mile and potentially our
greatest mare forced to rewrite the record book. It
was beautiful.
This is not new. Remember Our Maestro and Luxury
Liner in the New Zealand Cup? Or Gammalite and
Armalight setting up Lord Module for one of Addington’s greatest ever wins in the Allan Matson.
Trust me, I have.
But while the financial benefits will come, the real
reason we want the Aussies here is because they are
one of the most competitive races on earth.
And that will make Saturday more fun.
Which is what it should be.

FOR JEWELS DAY 2015…..
Something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue.
Sounds like a wedding day doesn’t it?
Four things any bride is supposed to have before
she takes the plunge, or walk, down the aisle on her
wedding day.
Good luck charms, if you will.
Now you might be wondering what this has to do
with harness racing and more importantly the Harness Jewels.
But there is some method to my madness.
We all want Jewels day to be a massive success.
We want the sun to be shining and the track to be
fast and conducive to record-breaking times.
But above all else we want the day to go on happily
without any drama or conflict.
So, why not have a few good luck charms on hand
to help keep the demons away.
And I’m pretty sure we can find those good luck
charms using the age old wedding tradition mentioned above.
Something Old: Sky Major and Venus Serena are
in Jewels terms, old. Shooting for their third consecutive Jewels victories there are few more experienced than they and the potential history that
awaits them on Saturday would be completely deserving for both.
Something New: Our good friends from across the
Tasman. They have of course been here before, but
off their own backs. This year we have extended the
invitation to them to come and compete at one of
our biggest days and they’ve jumped at it and are
arriving in their droves – from horses to trainers,
driver, owners and supporters.
Something Borrowed: Our infamous Harness Jewels
colours. The standout yellow jacket that most trainers can’t wait to get their hands on and some can’t
wait to get their hands off. Of everything about the
Jewels from the day it began, the Jewels colours
have been the most consistent. Based on the Tour
De France’s Yellow Jersey they have stood the test of
time and have been one of the best borrowed ideas
in harness racing.
Something Blue: There are 23 of these on Jewels
Day 2015 – so luck should be plentiful. The All Stars
stable has long been the bench mark in harness
racing and they’ve set the tone in the Jewels too.
Expect more success this year too and whether you
enjoy seeing an incredible set up producing continued results or you just appreciate sheer talent when
you see it – enjoy what they have to offer.
Jewels day is the day you throw everything you normally do out the window.
Anything goes over one mile in what is essentially
the dash for cash.
Like the Rugby World Cup Final, no one will come off
the track going oh well there is always next week.
So enjoy Jewels Day 2015.

A MIDFREW HEADING FORWARD

Nigel McGrath is promising a far better version of Luisanabelle Midfrew in the opening race on Jewels day.
But he realises even that might not be enough to win
the $150,000 two-year-old Diamond.
The Canterbury trainer with the eye for young equine
talent believes his filly is good enough to lead and get
some serious money because she will be significantly better than when she finished fourth to Northern Velocity in
the Sales Series at Addington last start.
“It wasn’t that she went poor last start because she had
to race parked and still finished fourth but I think she will
be better this week,” McGrath told HRNZ.
“This time of year young horses can pick up bugs or
problems and it is hard keeping them at their peak but I
think she has improved since Addington.
“And if I am right about that then she can be a factor on
Saturday because I think we saw at Alexandra Park at her
previous start how good she is.
“She has gate speed to get handy early or even lead
and she can definitely get some of it.”
While McGrath is hardly the sort to concede any race,
he is realistic enough to know that even the best Luisanabelle Midfrew might struggle to beat Dream About Me,
whose reputation grew even more after her sizzling last
400m to down Salty Robyn at the trials last Saturday.
“My filly is good but maybe Dream About Me is just
better. She could be the next Adore Me, on what she has
shown so far.
“But we have been in this position before. A couple of
years ago we won a big one at Alexandra Park with Libertybelle Midfrew beating Venus Serena.
“Sometimes when you have a really good filly somebody else has a better one and more often than not they
will beat you. But you sometimes turn the tables.
“So my job is to have her right on the day, which I think
I will, and then we have a confident young driver in Matty
Williamson.
“And then you just have to hope for some luck.”
TIM’S BIGGEST ASSIGNMENT YET

He’s handled every challenge thrown his way so far but
Harness Jewels day 2015 will be the biggest yet for Tim Williams.
The young horseman has made incredible strides since
teaming up with Mark Purdon and Natalie Rasmussen as
a stable driver and his results on the track speak for themselves.
Heading into Jewels Day he’s won 40 races this season
– four at Group One level and a further black type races –
for stake earnings of more than $1million.
Having horses like Have Faith In Me and Dream About
Me has without doubt helped but you still have to drive
the good ones properly and when you’re young and trying
to make an impression that can be easier said than done.
“It’s been pretty crazy how quickly it’s all happened,’’
Williams said.
DREAM ABOUT ME
“I think I thought there would be like a season or two
where I worked my way into it but it’s been all go since the
beginning.’’
Williams will drive four horses for his employers on
Jewels Day including hot pots Have Faith In Me and Dream
About Me.
The latter left tongues wagging with her blistering final
400 metres at the workouts last weekend – include that of
Williams.
“Not many could do that with the ear plugs still in,’’ he
said.
“She jogged it.
“It was actually quite scary how easy she handled it.’’
Drawn nine doesn’t help the equation but Williams
confidence only grew in the moments following the workout on Saturday.
“I think it shows she could come from anywhere and we
don’t have to lock ourselves into the one plan.
“When you look at the field there isn’t a lot of early
speed inside of us so we might be able to punch out and
get handy.
“But she’s such an adaptable filly that it won’t worry her
if we have to go back or anything like that.’’
The half-sister to Christen Me and Hands Christian
heads into the Diamond undefeated and her $1.45 quote
would suggest she’s going to come out on the other side
that way too.
2YO RUBY
NAIRN SET TO UNLEASH ANOTHER

When Paul Nairn says Conon Bridge is comparable to
his Jewels winner of two years ago One Over Da Moon, he
ain’t kidding.Because the similarities between the pair, and
the tasks they faced to win the juvenile Ruby, are incredible.
Conon Bridge faces starting off the unruly on Saturday,
just as One Over Da Moon did at Ashburton two years ago.
The favourite and wearer of the yellow Harness Jewels colours that day was Daenerys Targaryen, who galloped at
the start.
The favourite this week and wearer of the yellow jacket
is also a Purdon-Rasmussen filly, this time High Gait. And
just like One Over Da Moon, Nairn doesn’t totally trust
Conon Bridge just yet. But for far different reasons. “One
Over Da Moon was unruly in this race because he could
gallop pretty badly,” said Nairn. “But this little fella is different. He never really feels like he is going to gallop, in fact
he has a beautiful gait.
“But he can be a real hothead. He is one of those horses
sometimes when you want him to slow down or stop he
doesn’t see the point so he keeps going. “So he wears a
kind of pulling cord in his mouth, a little bit like what Call
Me Now used to wear,
and it seems to make
him more tractable.
“So I still think the
unruly is the best place
for him and while that
makes it harder to win,
he can still do it.” Nairn
says Conon Bridge has
improved since his last
start win at Addington

he realises the challenge of High Gait, who was brilliant
at Addington last start. “I was impressed with her last time
while their other filly (Missandei) looks like she is improving too. “But I really like my horse and I think he is at least as
good as One Over Da Moon was at the same stage.” Which
means he only needs some luck to have a great show at
giving Nairn his third Jewels wins in five Ashburton meetings, having won the four-year-old Ruby at the first Jewels
meeting with Stig.
McCAFFERY CAN’T SPLIT HIS PAIR

Sean McCaffrey thinks he has a good chance of winning his second Jewels crown at Ashburton on Saturday
– but he just doesn’t know which colt will bring home the
chocolates.
Royal Willie and Gershwin have drawn five and six respectively in the $100,000 Group One Neumann’s Tyres
2yo Ruby Trot.
“Both can win it. We won’t be going around to hold
hands, I can tell you that. They are very content down here
and for that reason I couldn’t be happier. We’ve got the
right shoes on them this time. This is what we have prepared them for all season.
“They are both good stayers and both very tough horses,” McCaffrey said.
The Cambridge trainer will drive Gershwin while Maurice McKendry will steer Royal Willie. They were ranked seventh and fifth going into the final and this week were quoted by the New Zealand TAB at $15 and $13 respectively.
He said Gershwin’s shoe were too light for the sticky
conditions when finishing eighth in his first South Island
start at Addington Raceway on May 15.
Royal Willie, who is yet to race in the ‘Mainland’, also
broke at the Ashburton Workouts when fifth of five.
“It was the first time ‘Willie’ had the plugs pulled on him
and he got a hell of a fright and jumped up in the air like a
stunned mullet.
“It was quite surprise to see him do that because he’s always been so fool proof. He’s a professional young trotter.
They’ve both got the correct aluminium weights on now
and I’m confident both of them will go a big race,” McCaffrey said.
“But which one is going to win? Well I honestly don’t
know that. Either one could,” he added.
Both trotters have won two races this season.
McCaffrey won his only Jewels Crown on his home track
in 2008 when the late Sovereignty nailed the $100,000
Listed 3yo Ruby Trot. Maurice McKendry did the driving
that day.
4YO DIAMOND
VENUS SERENA HAS GOT HER SWING BACK

She’s not the lay down misère many expected she
would be at the start of the season but the 3YO Diamond
is still definitely Venus Serena’s to lose.
And while history might suggest she can’t do it, as no
horse has ever won three Jewels, the incredible mare has
shown throughout her career that she is capable of producing the goods when her back is against the wall.
The plan hasn’t exactly gone to script for Geoff Dunn
and her connections, but there have been signs in the past
few weeks that the tide is turning back in her favour.
An impressive victor over a mile at Cambridge on
Christmas Eve the daughter of Mach Three hasn’t quite
been the same since, despite winning the Group One New
Zealand Breeders Stakes in March.
Dunn is confident however that when his glamour
mare steps out onto Ashburton that she will do so in fine
fettle.
“I think I’ve finally got her back,’’ he said following her
most recent trial victory at Ashburton.
“Johnny (John Dunn) said she feels more like her old
self and she’s driving a lot better and that’s always a good
sign.’’
Unsighted since she flopped on a tricky track at Forbury last month, Dunn has regretted taking her down
there since. “I should have never gone with her…there was
just so much against us.
“But when I saw the nominations were quite light I
thought we would be fine, but in hindsight it was a decision I shouldn’t have made.’’
Dunn had to quickly put the disappointment of Forbury
behind him and shift his focus back towards the Jewels.
He’s meticulously managed every part of Venus Serena’s preparation and judging on her trial performance at
Ashburton last week the magic is working.
The free-going mare dominated two other rivals in a
mobile event – stopping the clock at 2:56.
Drawn 13 again this year in the Diamond the challenge
won’t be easy – especially with a mare like Lancewood
Lizzie flying out from the one barrier.
The Barry Purdon trained filly has her shot at winning
a big race from the ace while Willow who has been the inform mare of the latter stages of the season will start from
next to Venus Serena and can’t be under-estimated either.
Australian mare, Cala, returns to her native land and
gets her chance at Jewels success with the two barrier
which should see her near to the speed throughout.
GEOFF AND JUDE ARE BACK FOR MORE

Geoff and Jude Knight have Al Raza in the Woodlands
Stud Four year old Diamond at Ashburton and Geoff knows
she’s in with a chance.
He’s never forgotten 2012 when contrary to opinion…
Pembrook’s Delight and Matthew Williamson defeated Bettor Cover Lover in the corresponding race at Cambridge.
“The memories stay with you,” he said, “one of the things
it taught me is to never say never, because it’s a horse race.
You can’t be confident but given the right trip she won’t
disgrace herself.”
Al Raza has raced 12 times since Christmas from one
mile to two miles and Geoff says the schedule of frequent
racing has been important.“Its a big race and they’ve got
to be hard and race fit,” he said. “That’s why she started off
50 metres behind (at Invercargill on 16 May), she needed
a good run.”
The daughter of Gotta Go Cullen and Al Zahra has since
had a solid hit-out with Onedin Onyx on the Roxburgh
track and Knight was pleased. “They ran a nice last half and
last quarter, the key was a good sprint at the end, she’s as
fit and as ready as we can get her.”

Apart from the Southern Country Cups final, he has
driven Al Raza all year and only missed the Cups final
through suspension.
They have drawn four and Geoff is happy enough with
that given those drawn inside and outside her.
“They’ll be going from go to whoa, we won’t be pulling
back but it will be up to Matt. She’ll be off the inside and
I hope she can stay handy. I don’t know how fast she can
go, they’ll probably go about 1:53 and I expect her to be
capable of that. She’s a good follower of speed, it depends
on who leads and when they go round. It’s just a privilege
to have her there.”
3YO RUBY
MONBET CHASES HIS SECOND

The challenge of knocking the immovable Speeding
Spur of his perch in the three-year-old Ruby might prove
to be easier said than done but defending Jewels champ
Monbet looks up the challenge.
And the Woodend Beach training partnership of Greg
and Nina Hope plan to have their star trotter on song for
the biggest assignment of his three-year-old season.
Last year’s two-year-old Ruby has been kept in cotton
wool since two very strong Auckland performances behind the rampant Speeding Spur – but has produced to
winning performances against the pacer’s at workouts and
trials on the Ashburton track.
“They’ve been exactly what we wanted out of him,
each time,’’ Greg Hope said.
“We just have to manage him a little bit – we do have an
eye on the future with him so are conscious of not pressing
him too much this season because he’s capable of winning
some big races in the next few years I think.
“But at this stage he’s spot on for the Jewels.’’
Off the second line the imposing trotter is going to have
to watch all of his key rivals jostle for early positions but
when you consider the speed on the front line – it could
turn out to be a positive provided he doesn’t spot those
same horses too much distance by the time he settles.
What should help is that he follows out the very quick
Sunny Ruby.
If Ricky May can keep himself on the filly’s back early he

might find himself within four lengths of the lead by the
time they settle.
Hope isn’t too concerned how things play out as long
as his charge is out in clear air at the right time.
“He’s one of those horses who tends to take a bit of
time to wind up so as long as gets out in the open and can
get rolling he will run a race.
“The length of the Ashburton straight should suit him
as he’ll get every chance to work into it.’’
Speeding Spur should find the front at some point in
the race, although Natalie Rasmussen might be keen to
allow the keen Prince Fearless his head and stay in front
should she get there first.
The battles within battles are what will decide the 3YO
Ruby and patience could be the key to success.
Something we know Ricky May has plenty of.
BERNIE AND MICHELLE CHASING THE GLORY

Bernie Hackett can’t split his two New Zealand record
holders heading into the three-year-old Ruby Trot at Ashburton Raceway.
Hackett and his wife Michelle Wallis will be looking to
win their first Jewels Crown in the $100,000 Group One mobile mile with Charming Lavra and Rock Tonight.
The filly and the gelding copped the ‘visitor’s draw’ with
barriers 12 and 14 respectively, but Hackett said he was
pleased to have two starters in the Christchurch Casino
sponsored Final.
“I can’t separate them going into the race. Charming
Lavra does everything right. She’s pretty fool-proof, whereas the other fella can be a bit tardy at the start, but in saying
there’s not a lot between them,” the Waiuku horseman said.
His wife will drive Rock Tonight, while Todd Mitchell will
steer Charming Lavra. They were seeded 7th and 5th re-
spectively when the final rankings were released. The TAB
has them at $126 and $51 to win the Final.
“Rock Tonight’s blood was a bit off after his Addington
run (seventh) a couple of weeks ago, but he’s right now.
“As for Charming Lavra she beat Belles Son at the Rangiora Workouts last Wednesday, so we are happy with that.
“It would mean a lot to win a Jewels for the first time
and when you have two New Zealand record holders in the
race then you have to be in with a chance don’t you?” said
Hackett who is staying with David Butt, while in Canterbury.
Rock Tonight set his New Zealand record at Alexandra
Park on March 13 when he set a national 2200m standing
start record of 2:50.3 for 3yo colts and geldings.
Charming Lavra’s 2200m standing start record for the
3yo fillies was also set at Alexandra Park.
On May 1 she stopped the clock in 2:49.1.
3YO DIAMOND
PURDON PAIR READY FOR THE CHALLENGE

Barry Purdon has been training good horses long
enough to know how hard it will be to win the three-yearold Diamond on Saturday.
It is not that he thinks he doesn’t have the horse power
to pull of an upset with Democrat Party or Start Dreaming,
it is just that half of that horse power has drawn on the
wrong side of the track.
And to make matters worse, the big gun fillies have
drawn to make life extra hard for Purdon’s pair.
Democrat Party faces the uber daunting task of barrier seven after scratchings, negating her gate speed while
Start Dreaming has barrier three, but with The Orange
Agent drawn directly inside her.
“Democrat Party’s draw makes it very hard for her, and
while a bad draw can sometimes turn out good, it definitely doesn’t help,” says Purdon.
“It is a real shame too because she has been brave all
season and was holding The Orange Agent all the way up
the straight at Addington in the Oaks (where she finished
second).”
Start Dreaming was one of the Oaks failures
when she over-raced and made life impossible for herself
on the soaked night.
“She was pretty tired after that and a bit quiet for a

couple of days,” admits Purdon.
“But she has bounced back now and will be spot on for
this week but while she has drawn well (three) she probably can’t across The Orange Agent and we all know how
good she is.
“I can see her leading and being the one to beat, like
she was in the Nevele R final a few weeks ago.”
If one of Purdon’s pair can pull of the miracle defeat of
The Orange Agent and Fight For Glory, they will continue the
boss’s improvement curve in the three-year-old Diamond.
He produced Cheer The Lady to finish third in the division three years ago and Ideal Belle was runner-up to Venus Serena last year.
JONES KEEN TO STRIKE UP THE BAND

If you saw Rocker Band’s effort at the Jewels workouts
last weekend and were disappointed, don’t be.
The daughter of New Zealand Trotting Cup winner,
Mainland Banner, looked a lack lustre fourth in behind Ideal Success in a 1:54 mile but instead of being surprised by
the performance, Jones was actually expecting it.
Unsighted since her poor showing in the Southland
Oaks, Saturday was Rocker Band’s first public appearance
since then.
So she needed the blow out.
“We knew she would hit the wall at some point in the
heat,’’ Jones said.
“But I wasn’t all that disappointed with the way she
went to be honest.’’
You would assume that with comments like those that
Jones would be heading into this weekend’s 3YO Diamond
with confidence of a good showing.
That’s not the case.
“She could probably go the best race of her life, but I
still don’t think it would be enough for her to win it.
“There are some fillies in her race, namely The Orange
Agent and Fight For Glory who are simply better than everyone else.
“And it would take an awful lot of bad luck to go their
way to bring a horse like my filly into it.’’
Don’t take that as Jones conceding defeat either.
He’s just telling it how he sees it and those who know
Jones will know that he’s one of those people who calls a
spade a spade.
And if nothing else, he’s got a point.
The Orange Agent and Fight For Glory appear to be
streets ahead of everyone else.
There’s a nice pack in behind them of Democrat Party,
Start Dreaming, Linda Lovegrace, Supersonic Miss etc.
But even they seem a length or two behind the pack.
So a win in this category from anything outside of the
two favourites, especially considering their barrier draws,
will be considered a major upset. But the battle within the
battle of these two wonderful fillies is set to be a something special.
2YO EMERALD
BETTER THAN JUST A THIRD RATE STABLE MATE

If there’s one horse who could sneak under the guard in
a sea of blue and silver on Saturday then its Motu Premier.
Never out of the money in seven starts the $100,000
Yearling Sales purchase has been quietly chipping away
behind his high fashion stable mates all season but gets
his chance to turn things around in the 2YO Emerald.
With gate speed and a knack of rounding out his races
strongly the son of Bettor’s Delight has had things fall into
place for him ahead of Saturday – especially with his barrier draw of 2.
“It looks really good for him,’’ Tim Williams said.
“His performances have been great recently, especially
when you consider that the races haven’t really played out
for him the way that suits him best.
“We want them to go flat out the whole way and then
try and get over the top of them.’’
With Salty Robyn and Chase The Dream drawn outside
him, Williams will have a few questions to ponder over ear-
ly on in the one mile contest.
He should be able to get across Three Dreams but
whether he hands straight up to Salty Robyn, who you
know is going to come for a look, or wait for one of his
stable mates, either Lazarus or Chase The Dream.
A winner of just one of his seven starts, Motu Premier
very easily could have had a few more wins as well.
He jumped a mark on the track in the Sapling Stakes
but staged a massive recovery to finish close up behind
Chase The Dream.
“Because he hasn’t been able to win all the time, It’s
probably easy to think he’s below the others.
“But if he gets his chance he can cause an upset I think.’’
Potentially the 2YO Emerald could be one of the quickest races of the day, due to the nature of the speed on the
front line.
And that’s a scenario that looks perfectly suited to a
horse like Motu Premier.
MCKENDRY OUT TO UPSET THE APPLE CART

Even Maurice McKendry admits winning his first Jewels
crown as a trainer is going to be very difficult from the widest second row draw.
McKendry will steer Shandale from gate 14 in the
Group One $150,000 Commodore Hotel 2yo Emerald Pace
for colts and geldings.
“The colt is very well. In fact he is better than he’s ever
been. He likes it down here. I couldn’t be happier with him
– but we will need all the luck in the world, and then hope
the good horses, who have drawn better, have a bit of bad
luck.
“It’s a quality field with some really nice colts,” McKendry said.
‘The Magic Man’ was delighted with Shandale’s two
races at Addington on May 9 and 15 when finishing second and fourth in the $200,000 Listed PGG Wrightson 2yo
Pace and the $160,000 Group One Garrards Sires Stakes
2yo Final.
He drew three and seven on those respective nights.
“He was real gutsy when he was three-wide without
cover last start and he
still managed to finish

Brad Williamson will be the most recognizable reinsman contesting the Harness Jewels at Ashburton on
Saturday wearing a Santa Claus hat when driving Father
Christmas in the $100,000 Four-Year-Old Ruby.
The owners of Father Christmas had the head gear approved by stewards. The hats have traditionally been worn
by the drivers or riders of favoured horses as a TAB promotion for Christmas racing in New Zealand.
The owners of Father Christmas, the 28-strong Seafield
Trotting syndicate and David Beckingsale, have donned
the hats for presentations after his wins.
Father Christmas, who was born on Christmas Day,
2010, has won five times and boosted his prospects with
a last start win in a track record time at Oamaru on May 18.
Father Christmas came off a second line draw to record
3.18.2 for 2600m from the mobile gate and lower a record
that had stood for 16 years.
The 20-year-old Brad has driven Father Christmas in his
19 races.
Father Christmas, who has again drawn the second line,
has performed well in stronger company than he encountered at Oamaru.
He ran second to King Denny in the Four and Five-YearOld Championship at Addington last month.
He also has in his favour that he is trained by Brad’s fa-
ther, Phil Williamson, who has won the Ruby with Springbank Richard (Cambridge, 2008) and Leighton Hest (Ashburton, 2009).
Springbank Richard also won a Harness Jewels race at
Ashburton as a three-year-old, preceding that with a win
at Oamaru.
A win for Father Christmas would be also fitting as he
is raced on lease from long time Ashburton breeders Keith
and Bevan Grice.
A son of Love You, Father Christmas is out of Juliana
(Sundon – Janetta’s Pride), a sister to prolific winners, Dependable, Jo Anne and Ima Gold Digger.
Juliana traces to Agent, a Nelson Derby mare Keith Grice
began breeding from 68 years ago. Her first foal, Sayonara
(by Pacing Power) won a race at a Rangiora-Cheviot meeting in 1952 when trained by Keith.
WHAT WILL BE WILL BE FOR MICHAEL

As far as he’s concerned, Michael Ward has done all he
can do with his great trotting mare Majestic Time.
He’s got her to the Jewels and will take her to Ashburton in the best possible shape he can have her.
But once she steps out onto the track with Ken Barron
for the 4YO Ruby, it’s out of his control and he’s just like
every other person sitting in the stand.
“You can only do so much, so I tend to try and not worry
about it,’’ he said. “What will be, will be from that point on.
“I hope we have her right enough to be in it. I think we
do. But you just never know.’’
Second as a two-year-old at Ashburton behind One
Over Da Moon, nothing quite went right at Cambridge last
year and there have been times this season when Majestic
Time has threatened to fall back into those old bad habits.
But on the whole she’s been super and showed that she
is still capable of footing it with anything in the age group.
“I wish I could tell you what the issue was when she has
galloped, but I honestly don’t think there is one.
“Sometimes she trots perfectly, other times she doesn’t.
And that’s about it, really.’’
A dominant winner at Oamaru a fortnight ago against
many of the horse she will fight it out with on Saturday,
the incredibly fast mare has the tactical speed to outsprint
anything in the race should she get the right run.
That was evident at Addington earlier in the season
when she appeared to be going to give King Denny a run
for his money only to gallop a furlong off the post.
Barron was adamant that night he was going to beat
the All Stars champ, and 4YO Ruby favourite and even
Mark Purdon had a few moments of concern.
While drawing barrier three is fantastic, Ward wouldn’t
have been too concerned had she drawn the second line.
“It’s a good draw, but then again is it a good draw?
“I honestly think our best chance is to come at them
late so drawing behind them might not have been a bad
thing.
“We just have to hope we can slot in and get the right
run.’’
And should that happen, look out for the great wee
mare who has a couple of scores to settle this weekend.
3YO EMERALD
SOUTHERNERS ARE COMING TO TOWN

Invercargill junior driver Craig Ferguson started the
week with 31 wins for the season, a tally which had him
sitting at the top of the National Junior Drivers table.
At the end of the week he gets the biggest opportunity
of his five-season career, when he drives Milligan in the
McMillans Feeds Four Year Old Emerald.
Milligan is trained in Eastern Southland by Ross Wilson
who provided Ferguson with his first winner, My Guy Mac
in December 2011.
Ferguson was aboard Milligan in both his first start, October 2013, and his first win, March 2014, and has virtually
been a regular ever since.
Milligan is the winner of five from 52 and knows no
other winning pilot but Ferguson.
The four year old is by Grinfromeartoear from Outkast,
a Panorama mare who won once.
Wilson recalls the occasion because it was one of his
only three winning drives.
As well as Milligan, Outkast has left Jerry Fitz, the winner of eight.
This will be Wilson's second foray into the Jewels.
His first was at the inaugural series in 2007.
Jimbob Jac represented him in the Four-Year-Old Emerald and finished 10th in the contest won by Monkey King.
Saturday's race will be Milligan's 33rd this season.
“He's a lovely eater, lovely doer, got great manners and
thrives on racing,” Wilson said.
“He's a good follower of speed and a good stayer.
He can run sub-24 quarters in a race and has been
timed during a race to run 1:54. He won't disgrace himself.”
In his final start before the Jewels, Milligan raced over
2400 metres at Winton last Sunday.
Third on the inner early, he was shuffled back to last
when the winner made her move.
On a 57.2 last half, he made ground well in the straight
to get up for third.
As usual, Ferguson was in the sulky and says he's quite
excited about the opportunity to drive on Harness Racing's big day.
“It's my first drive at the Jewels, he should go well, it
was good of Ross to leave me on,” Ferguson said.
PRINCE OF PALMY GETS HIS CHANCE

Stephen Doody knows he can finally win a Jewels with
Te Kawau on Saturday. And he is just as adamant about
who he has to beat to achieve that.
Doody, who has had a couple of Jewels fifths before,
is confident Te Kawau can lead and be the horse to catch
in the four-year-old Emerald after his stunning last start
Winter Cup win in the slush at Addington.
He came from near last at Addington to win over the
3200m, beating among other the fastest ever Jewels winner Border Control, looking more than a little like former
CD superstar Yulestar during that performance.
“He couldn’t be better and the draw is perfect for him,”
says the Manawatu trainer.
“He has good gate speed and we will be going forward
and trying to lead, which is how he won at Addington on
Cup Day.
“And I think he can win this week too. He was that unlucky in the Messenger at Alexandra Park, where he always
tends to draw bad.
“If he had got a better run there I am sure he could
have won the Messenger, which is why I believe he can
win this week.”
But as confident as Doody is, he is also realistic about
the talents of Sky Major, hunting his third Jewels.
“He (Sky Major) is a very good horse and maybe to an
extent our winning chance depends on what sort of run
he gets.
“He is handy on the second line and that can be a good
draw or a bad draw but if he gets a good run obviously he
is the one we have to beat because he is a top horse.
“But again, going on what happened in the Messenger,
if we are in front of him we can beat him.”
Doody will of course stick with Jim Curtin on Te Kawau,
even though the rangy pacer has often been driven by
Todd Mitchell.
“Jimmy is my South Island driver and Todd my northern
driver for him. “But we couldn’t be happier and am looking
forward to the day.”

THE TITAN IS READY FOR BATTLE

Westwood beach trainer Graeme Anderson is taking
a low key approach to the Harness Jewels with his candidates Titan Banner and Onedin Mach.
“They are both low qualifiers and I am happy where
they are at. The draws are good for them on the second
row. They are not favoured so there is no stress on them or
me,’’ said Anderson.
The Jewels was not a target for the three-year-old gelding Titan Banner, who is held in high regard by Anderson.
It became a convenient race for him to wind up his first
season of racing.
He qualified with a stakes tally of $29,291 after 12 other
higher earning three-year-olds dropped out.
Titan Banner has not contested a major race and Anderson has brought the half-brother by Art Major to Mainland Banner along quietly with a view to the future.
Titan Banner began racing with a win at Forbury Park
in October and he has since won at Ascot Park, Ashburton,
Winton and Rangiora.
Anderson was taken with the Rangiora win in 2.26.4
(1.57.7 mile rate) for 2000m on April 26.
Titan Banner subsequently finished second to Jewels
rival, Hug The Wind at Addington.
He has raced nine times with a three and a half month
break from early January.
Titan Banner will be driven for the first time by Ricky
May.
Dexter Dunn, who has driven Titan Banner in seven of
his starts for three wins, is committed to Art Union.
John Dunn and Jonny Cox have also driven Titan Banner to win.
Onedin Mach, the drive of Dunn, is an outside chance
in the Emerald for four-year-olds on the strength of a last
start second to Te Kawau at Addington.
Onedin Mach only joined Anderson in February for the
benefit of beach work after a hock strain.
Onedin Mach won first up from his new quarters on
the grass at Waikouaiti in March and he has been placed in
three of his subsequent four starts.
He won eight races when trained in Southland by Nathan Williamson with three of those wins there early in the
season.
DALGETY KEEPING IT LOW KEY

Life is a little less stressful ahead of Jewels day this year
for Cran Dalgety.
With no bona fide superstar, the West Melton horseman will head down the road to Ashburton with fewer expectations and enjoy the day.
He will still have three runners; Art Union, On The Town
and Chevron’s Champion – but the confidence levels are
more optimistic than other years when he’s had the likes of
Smiling Shard, Onlyforyou and Christen Me.
“It’s certainly not what I’m used to,’’ Dalgety said.
“When we purchased at the Sales last year we weren’t
really looking for two-year-olds, it’s just the way it worked
out.
“I’ve also sold a lot of my good stock this season which
has left us a little bit light at the moment.
“But it all works in swings and roundabouts.’’
Art Union will lead the Dalgety charge on Saturday in
the 3YO Emerald – but he has work cut out for him against
an imposing All Stars duo of Have Faith In Me and Follow
The Stars.
The son of Art Major and Sparks A Flyin has been well
travelled over the past 10 months but has thrived on the
programme.
“We’ve been everywhere with him, Australia, Auckland,
Invercargill.
“So he’s had a big season and it’s been more about
keeping him ticking over than getting him fit.
“He’s probably a level or two down on the pecking order but he has shown he can compete with them.’’
Drawn barrier three means Dexter Dunn will have plenty of opportunities and Dalgety isn’t about to start telling
his star-driver how to handle his horses.
“I’m better off focusing on the training side of things
and letting Dexter do what he is good at.
“The thing with the Jewels is that everyone often gets
caught up in the speed factor side of things, but more often than not the races are about the survival of the fittest.
“So while we have great gate speed we might not necessarily have to use it.’’
Dalgety’s filly, On The Town has the coveted draw of
one in the 3YO Diamond – enhanced further by The Orange Agent being drawn to her outside.
Chevron’s Champion returns from the North Island and
will have to come off the second line.

AMANDA SET TO ACHIEVE ANOTHER MILESTONE

Young Aussie star Amanda Turnbull just keeps clocking
up the firsts in her already stellar career.
And the 25-year-old, who has driven well over 1000
winners, will add another when she drives Just Cala in at
Ashburton on Saturday.
No, it won’t be her first drive in New Zealand, but it will
be first drive on a “proper” track, as she calls it.
“I’ve been across to a NZ twice to drive, but only on the
grass tracks,” Turnbull said after arriving in Christchurch
this week. “(Just) Cala will be my first drive on what we’d
call a proper track over here.”
Turnbull has driven at the past two “youth versus experience” series at Waikouaiti, most recently when she landed
a winner back on March 17.
“That’s been fun, but I really can’t wait to be part of
Saturday. It’s been a big build-up for Nathan and I and to
come from across from Australia and have two runners on
CALA
such a huge raceday is amazing,” she said.
Turnbull confirmed she would only drive Cala with Jack
to take the reins on stablemate Glenferrie Bronte.
“We thought we should share the load and both be
part of it,” she laughed.
Turnbull and Jack have been together for a couple of
years and their stable has quickly grown to 20 in work
since Turnbull made Victoria home.
“Training is something I’ve always wanted to get into,
I’ve helped a lot back at home in Bathurst,” she said.
The Bathurst-born Turnbull is the daughter of top
horseman Steve Turnbull of Smooth Satin fame.
Her grandfather is the great Tony Turnbull, a Bathurst
legend through the deeds of the great Hondo Grattan.
“It wasn’t easy leaving home, but it’s the next chapter
of my life and career. It took a while to settle in, but I’ve got
a better balance now,” she said.
“The
training
is more fun now
we’ve got some
nice horses and
I’m not going back
to drive in NSW as
much as I did when
I first moved down
(to Victoria).”
Turnbull will be
chasing her sixth
Group 1 win as a
driver on Saturday.
“The
biggest
of them so far has
been the Breeders Crown on (Just)
Cala last season so
I’m hoping she can
win me another this
week,” she said.
“I think both
our runners will be
competitive. We’ve
had some luck in
the draws and they
are both in really
good form.”

A DREAM STARTED ON TWITTER

Twitter is one of the best things in the world, just ask a
group of owners who have a share in Jewels hopeful Burnaholeinmypocket.
In fascinating sign of the technological times, five mates
from the Victorian country town of Horsham bought a 25
per cent share in Burnaholeinmypocket via twitter.
“Twitter is a great way to keep people updated and
connect,” trainer Andy Gath said. “I posted a tweet saying
I had some shares available in a well-bred Bettors Delight
yearling and it all happened from there.”
Horsham boy Brad Sudholz rang his mate, Damien Kilpatrick, told him about Gath’s tweet.
“I direct messaged Andy on Twitter, said we were keen
to know more and quickly pulled together a group of five
of us to take 25 per cent of the colt,” Kilpatrick said.
“A few of us had been talking about getting back into
horses after a couple of years out, so Andy’s timing was
perfect.”
Kilpatrick and Sudolhz recruited Sudholz’s father, Ken,
Jeremy Schmidt and Matt Schier to take five per cent each
and make-up their quarter ownership of Burnaholeinmypocket.
“I’d never met any of the guys before they tweeted me,”
Gath said. “It’s great to have a mix of newcomers to my
stable racing this horse with some regulars in Wayne Gowland, John Lugg, Helen Dunne and Trent Cooper.”
While Gowland, Lugg, Dunne and Cooper are Ashburton-bound for Saturday, the Horsham crew will gather to
watch on TV in their hometown.
“It’s disappointing, but the timing doesn’t work. Most
of us have commitments here and still play local sport, so
we can’t make the trip,” Kilpatrick said.
“But don’t worry. We’ll be cheering as loudly as anyone,
just from Horsham.”
Kilpatrick and friends as more excited about Burnaholeinmypocket’s future than what he’s done so far.
“Andy never had a huge opinion of him, but it’s grown.
I think the Breeders Crown semi win was the start of the
excitement and it’s still growing,” he said.
“All along, Andy’s said he’s a slow maturer and we won’t
see the very best of him until he’s four or five. If that’s the
case, we’re in for some fun times.”
But Kilpatrick is also a realist when it comes to the
enormity of Saturday’s challenge.
“It was always going to be hard, but drawing the outside over a mile with the big guns drawn so well makes
it almost impossible,” he said. “Our aim is a top five finish,
knowing we’ve got a horse who is still on the way up.”

Here come the girls
Perhaps the most exciting thing about the Aussie raid
on Saturday’s Harness Jewels day is the display of female
talent on show.
From the multiple-Group 1 winning Kate Gath, to the
former dominant NSW-born now Victorian based Amanda
Turnbull along with the emerging Lauren Panella.
Three ladies from different backgrounds fighting their
way to the top in a sport dominated by the guys for so
long.
It’s been one of the greatest things about Australian
harness racing in the past 20 years, the growing list of females matching or beating the guys in our biggest races.
The real trailblazer was Kerryn Manning, who burst
onto the scene as a teenager 20 years ago and even won
a Group 1 race in Norway – on the mighty trotter Knight
Pistol – on the way up.
We had a fitting reminder of Manning’s talent when she
trained and drove former Kiwi placer Arden Rooney to an
upset win in the Hunter Cup earlier this year.
Along the way there have been others like Miracle Mile
winners Kellie Kersley and Jodi Quinlan along with names
such as Amy Tubbs, Ashlee Siejka, Lisa Justice, Lola Weidemann to mention just a few.
And, of course, there is Natalie Rasmussen. Aside from
her remarkable deeds with Blacks A Fake, she was a dominant force in Queensland harness for at least a decade before making NZ home.
These days, drivers like KerryAnn Turner (NSW), Narissa
McMullen (Qld), Danielle Hill (SA) and Lauren Jones (WA)
are making waves in their homes states.

will all be watching and

tackle the Jewels on Saturday,
Rather than a rivalry,
their largely seems to be
a sisterhood amongst

speak well and back it up with a mix of aggression, daring
and poise on the track.
Simply, they are three wonderful ambassadors for harness racing, not just in Australia but across the world.

drives classy sit-sprinter Cala against the 4YO Mares’ and

winning chance, but I’d lean to Turnbull and Cala.
Win, lose or draw, having three of the biggest female

the race in the middle stages. Chances outside of her include; LUISANABELLE MIDFREW (5) who looks the earlier leader, ARDEN’S CHOICE (11),
NORTHERN VELOCITY (7) and ALLISON STOKKE (3).
Suggested Bet: Dream About Me – Win.
RACE 2 NEUMANNS TYRES & THE TYRE GENERAL 2YO RUBY
Three strong winning chances in the baby trotters’ event; MISSANDEI
(2), HIGH GAIT (12) and CONON BRIDGE (13). Hard to split them pound
for pound especially with the barrier draws. High Gait was stunning in
her last appearance, but Conon Bridge looks the most natural of them.
Missandei gets the draw so will be well supported. Pick one you like
and back it. WILMA’S MATE (4), ROYAL WILLIE (5) and GERSHWIN (6) all
in with a chance too.

RACE 3: WOODLANDS STUD 4YO DIAMOND
There’s potential for history to be made here in the 4YO Diamond. VENUS SERENA (13) is shooting to be the first to win three and everything
of the last few weeks suggests we are going to see something special
from her once more. The horse they have to beat. WILLOW (12) shouldn’t
be forgotten – in stellar form and from the right stable. LANCEWOOD
LIZZE (1) gets the right barrier draw and will be driven aggressively.
Others worth considering CALA (2) and DELIGHTFUL DASH (7).

RACE 4: CHRISTCHURCH CASINO 3YO RUBY
One of the races of the day, especially from a tactical view. SPEEDING
SPUR (7) has been the dominant force all season and deserves to star
favourite, but he might not get things all his own way here like he has
in the past. MONBET (11) will be out to go back-to-back and looks in
fine form to do so. PRINCE FEARLESS (3) is better than what his recent
form has been – can bounce back. SUNNY RUBY (2) and PETITE ONE
(10) aren’t without chances.
Suggested Bet: Monbet – Win.
RACE 5: MID CANTERBURY TROTTERS ASSN 3YO DIAMOND
One of two battle royales of the day between two outstanding fillies.
THE ORANGE AGENT (2) has the barrier draw, the gate speed and the
record to lead and win – which she should do but FIGHT FOR GLORY
(11) is her equal and follows her through from the second line meaning the two should be going stride for stride from very early on in the
race. Hard to see any of the other great fillies in the race beating them.
START DREAMING (3), GLENFERRIE BRONTE (4) DEMOCRAT PARTY (8)
and LINDA LOVEGRACE (10 look set to fight out the remaining prizes.

An All Stars battle here between two very good pacers. CHASE THE
DREAM (4) AND LAZARUS (6) look the two horses they all have to beat.
How the race pans out early will determine who wins. Lazarus might
be looking for luck while Chase The Dream can make his own. SALTY
ROBYN (3) the Australian visitor is the fly in the ointment. He’ll make
sure it’s honest and MOTU PREMIER (2) might be the one to sneak under the guard. Well worth a bet.

RACE 7 MCMILLAN FEEDS 4YO RUBY
On what he has done his season, they simply shouldn’t beat KING DENNY (1). But will it be that simple? The untapped talent of BELLES SON (2)
has drawn right next to him which is sure to make things interesting.
He can win it on what he has shown in the past few months. MUM’S
PRIDE (8) is as good as anything in the race, but hampered by the barrier draw and recent concerns over his fitness. MAJESTIC TIME (4) could
be the giant-killer if she gets the right run and TROUBLE REIU (13) is the
real bolter though – good enough to figure.

Another shooting for history is SKY MAJOR (11). The Barry Purdon

for next season and require your photo to be sent in now.
Four options to submit your ‘portrait headshot photo’
1. Login to My HRNZ on the HRNZ website, click on “Edit profile” and follow instructions to upload your photo.
2. Email a photo to [email protected] and we will upload it for you.
3. Post your photo to Harness Racing NZ, PO Box 459, Christchurch 8140
4. Go to a pharmacy and have a passport photo taken and ask them to email to the above address.
Please un-tick the box on the website or advise us when you send your photo in
if you don’t want your photo to be used for any ‘promotional purposes’.
If we don’t receive a photo, you will receive a licence with a blank box
where the photo should be displayed.
