The Paw Print Parent Newsletter May 2015 Principal’s Message Dear Kleb Parents and Students, I hope this newsletter finds you well as we near the end of this school year and prepare for summer break. On the behalf of the faculty and staff at Kleb Intermediate, we thank you for an excellent 2014-2015 school year! We have thoroughly enjoyed watching your children learn and grow. The faculty at Kleb has a lot to celebrate as we wrap up the end of another great year! Recently, the Houston Chronicle published their annual School Report Card which rates schools on the basis of three indices: student achievement, socioeconomic performance, and growth. Kleb Intermediate scored an “A” and was ranked as one of Houston’s top 50 middle schools! Also, our STAAR scores came in and our Bearcubs did great! We will be celebrating with our students on Wednesday, June 4 in the afternoon at our 2nd annual “STAAR Celebration”! Lastly, we will be holding our 6-8th grade ceremonies next week to recognize our Bearcubs’ success! And the wonderful thing is that once a child learns to use a library, the doors to learning are always open.” Laura Bush Author David Lubar was here at Kleb! th 6 grade students enjoyed a wonderful presentation from author David Lubar April 27th. He was thoroughly entertaining and gave us some great pointers on how to generate ideas for writing! Lone Star Program th Congratulations to 6 grader Anastasia Mbajonas, 7th grader Saranda Matjani, and 8th graders Lucas Ardiff, Elizabeth Denny, and Eric Gilstrap, and Kathleen Sotelo for reading all twenty Lone Star books for the 2014-2015 school year! To date, we have 13 students who have read at least 15 Lone Stars and qualified for the Lone Star Luncheon on Thursday, May 28th! The last day to report a Lone Star Quiz for credit is May 26th. We are especially proud of Elizabeth Denny and Kathleen Sotelo who will have their names engraved on the permanent plaque in the library for their Lone Star Reading accomplishments all three years at Kleb! Kleb Library News Continued… End of the Year Information All library books are due back into the library by Friday, May 22nd. Please remind your student to check their locker, classrooms and at home for any Kleb library books that need to be turned in. Students who do not clear their library records will have holds on their report cards and not be allowed to check out books for the 2015-2016 school year. On March 26, the Beginning Band students each performed a solo for a panel of judges. They came away with 96 excellent medals and 10 Good Certificates!! April and May were busy months for our Advanced Bands. In early April, the Concert A and Symphonic Bands performed at the Pre-UIL contest at Klein HS. On Wednesday, April 29, 2015 the Symphonic Band participated in the annual UIL Concert and Sight-Reading Contest at Tomball MS and came away with straight first division ratings – a “Sweepstakes!” The Symphonic Band performed in the UIL contest on Friday, May 1, 2015 also received the “Sweepstakes” award for straight first division ratings. This is the first time since 2006 that both Concert A and Symphonic Bands have both received straight first division ratings. Way to go!! On Saturday, May 2, 2015 the Concert B, Concert A, and Symphonic Bands participated at the Gator Music Festival in Dickinson. They performed at McAdams Junior High in the morning, and all three bands received first division ratings from all three judges. Concert B was recognized as runner-up for best in their classification and received section award for Percussion, Low Brass, Trumpets, Flutes, and Clarinets. Concert A received section awards for Percussion, Low Brass, French Horns, Trumpets, Clarinets, Alto Saxophones, and Flutes. Symphonic Band sections that received awards were Percussion, Low Brass, Trumpet, Bassoon, Clarinet, and Flute. Soloists in receiving awards in the Symphonic Band were Lily M, Sophie R, Isoken O, Yakira S, Ben P, and Cameron G. -Auditions for the 2015-2016 Advanced Bands and Klein HS Bands will be in late May. Don’t forget that Summer Band Camps are a great way to continue playing over the summer. Email your child’s band director with any questions about band camps. In addition, the student must have a passing average of at least a 70% in science and social studies, as well as an overall average of 70% or above in all courses taken. Any student whose final yearly average is below 70% in language arts, math, science or social studies will be required to attend summer school for that subject in order to be promoted to the next grade level. Copies of progress reports and report cards may be obtained from the counselors’ office. If your student is currently in danger of failing a class, please contact the teacher in order to develop a plan for improvement. Edgenuity Grade Repair If you child has a failing grade below 70% in English, math, science and/or social studies, contact your child’s counselor for Edgenuity grade repair information. In order for your student to receive credit, your student must complete 10 or more hours of grade repair instruction for math, science and social studies and 12 or more hours of grade repair instruction for English. Edgenuity is available at Kleb after school to 5:45 pm. May 18 – 21 May 26 – 28 June 2 – 3 PROGRESS REPORTS REPORT CARDS May 14, 2015 June 12, 2015 (mailed home) Course Selection Information The final date to make any changes is June 11, 2015 at 3 pm. On May 14th, students were given a Verification Sheet, which shows the classes they have selected and were approved to take. If your family decides to change an elective choice, please send a dated and signed parent/guardian note to your student’s counselor with the class you want to drop and the class you want to add. A request to change an elective choice will be honored if the class is available and the student meets all of the pre-requisites for the class. CUSTODY INFORMATION Please assist us in the handling of custody related issues. It is the responsibility of the parents to provide the principal a certified copy of the court order affecting any other person’s right to their children. Should you have any questions, please call Ms. Haddox at 832-249-5515. As the summer approaches, a gentle reminder… Shooting fireworks or explosive devices of any kind in the building or on the campus, at any time, during the day or night, is forbidden.
