During the Second World War one of the most famous
operations carried out by the RAF was 617 Squadron’s
Operation Chastise, more commonly known as the
Dambusters. From their Officer’s mess, the Petwood
Hotel, comes an opportunity to hear a talk by the last
surviving British Dambuster, George “Johnny” Johnson
and Mary Stopes-Roe, the daughter of the designer of
the bouncing bomb, Sir Barnes Wallis.
However the history of the Squadron didn’t stop after
the Dams raids and 1944 saw them take part along
with 9 Squadron on the sinking of the Tirpitz. The
afternoon at the Petwood will see veterans from 9 and
617 Squadrons available to sign one of the IBCC’s own
Lancaster prints or memorabilia of your own.
The event includes:

14.30-17.00 We will have book signings by W/O
Frank Tilley 617 Sqn, W/O Colin Cole 617 Sqn and
W/O Ken Johnson 9 Sqn.

19.00 We will have talks from; George 'Johnny'
Johnson 617 Sqn and Mary Stopes-Roe, daughter
of Sir Barnes Wallis.
