New Delhi : Prime Minister
Narendra Modi held a highlevel
meeting
on
infrastructure sectors in
New Delhi last evening.
During the meeting, the
Prime Minister was given a
detailed overview of the
plans of various Ministries
for completion of pending
projects within the current
financial year.
Besides a broad
overview
of
the
infrastructure scenario in
the country, the meeting
focused on the specific
sectors
of
rural
infrastructure, power, coal,
renewable energy and
petroleum and natural gas.
Chairing
the
meeting,
Mr
Modi
underlined the need for
highest priority to the work
under the Pradhan Mantri
Krishi Sinchai Yojana for
strengthening irrigation
network in the country. He
said, there is a need to
realise the irrigation potential
of all reservoir projects to the
maximum possible extent.
Mr Modi reviewed the
status of stalled projects in
the infrastructure sector and
stressed on the need for
government departments to
work towards initializing
spending of the budget, in a
focused manner.
The Prime Minister
asked for a specific data on
priority areas such as toilets,
affordable housing and
smart cities. He said in the
urban areas, one of the
priorities should be creation
of waste to wealth, and
efficient systems for waste
water disposal and solid
waste management in 500
cities.
In the power
sector, Mr Modi reiterated
his
emphasis
on
electrification of the
unconnected villages at
the earliest. He said,
public spaces such as
railway stations should
be priority areas for
adopting energy efficient
technologies
and
renewable energy.

PM Modi on three-nation
tour of China, Mongolia and
Korea from May 14
New Delhi : Prime Minister
Narendra Modi will pay a
three nation visit to China,
Mongolia and Korea from
14th to 19th of this month.
In a release, External Affairs
Ministry said, in China,
Prime Minister will visit Xian,
Beijing and Shanghai from
14th to 16th of May. He will
hold bilateral meetings with
Chinese leadership and
participate in cultural and
business events. The Prime
Minister will also attend an
event organized by the
Indian community in China.
Ahead of the Prime
Minister’s visit to China,
India has relaxed the border
trade by raising the
transaction value of
consignments between the
two countries. In a
notification, Directorate
General of Foreign Trade
said that for border trade
between India and China,
the Cost, Insurance and
Freight or CIF value per
consignment is being
increased from Rs 1 lakh to
Rs 2 lakh in case of Nathula,
while for Gunji and Namgaya
Shipkila, the existing CIF
value limit of Rs 25,000 is
being enhanced to Rs 1 lakh.
Traders at the border
areas primarily import
carpets,
ready-made
garments, blankets, shoes,
jackets and quilts and export
mostly vegetable oil, rice,
processed food, canned
food, textiles and copper
items. Our correspondent
reports that India will take up
the issue and greater market
access for domestic products
during the Prime Minister’s
visit to China.
Mr Modi will reach
Mongolia on 17th of this
month in the second leg of
his visit. This is the first ever
visit by an Indian Prime
Minister to Mongolia. The
Prime Minister ’s visit to
South Korea will be from 18th
to 19th of May. Mr Modi will
hold bilateral discussions
with President Park Geunhye and meet with important
business leaders in Seoul.
Govt’s reform agenda
strengthened investor’s
sentiment: Jaitley
New Delhi : Finance
Minister Arun Jaitley has
said that government’s
reform
agenda
has
strengthened the sentiment
of investors towards India
resulting in greater money
coming into the country. In
an exclusive interview to DD
News, Mr Jaitley said that
significant work is being
done in the infrastructure
and agriculture sectors and
government is making
special efforts to tackle the
farmer’s issues particularly
irrigation.
The Finance Minister
said that government is
taking steps to ensure
transparency
in
its
functioning. He said that the
steps taken has resulted in
decline in corruption.
Mr Jaitley who also
heads the Information and
Broadcasting Ministry said,
giving bias-free news and
programmes is the prime
responsibility of Prasar
Bharati.
PAN mandatory for central
excise registration
New Delhi : Permanent
Account Number, PAN has
been made mandatory for
private firms seeking central
excise registration. As per
the rules, the registration
will now be given within two
days of filing online
applications to improve the
ease in doing business in
manufacturing. Finance
Ministry
order
said,
applicants
seeking
registration
shall
mandatorily quote PAN of
the proprietor or the legal
entity being registered in
the application form.
However
the
government departments
are exempted from the
requirement of quoting PAN
in their online application. It
said, applicants other than
government departments
shall not be granted
registration in the absence of
PAN. Applicant shall also
quote his e-mail address and
mobile number in the
application
form
for
communication with the
department.
Under the new
procedure, once duly
completed application form is
received online, registration
would be granted within two
working days and issued
online
without
any
examination
of
the
documents and verification of
documents or premises
before the grant of
registration.
14th edition
of IndoFrench
naval
exercise
VARUNA
concludes
New Delhi : The 14th
edition of Indo-French
naval exercise VARUNA
concluded on Saturday in
the presence of Goa Chief
Minister
Laxmikant
Parsekar, along with Vice
Admiral SPS Cheema,
Flag Officer Commandingin-Chief Western Naval
Command reviewing the
progress of the exercise
form on board French
Navy’s Aircraft Carrier,
Charles de Gaulle.
The ten day long
exercise commenced on
23 April 2015 and included
both a harbour and sea
phase in Goa. The
exercise goes a long
way
in
enhancing
interoperability between
the two navies and also
showcases the close ties
between the two countries.

Strong
earthquake
jolts Papua
New Guinea;
Tsunami
warning
issued
New Delhi : A powerful
earthquake rattled the
South Pacific island nation
of Papua New Guinea
today. Officials warned that
a local tsunami was
possible.
The
US
Geological
Survey
reported
the
7.4magnitude quake struck
about 130 kilometres
south of the town of
Kokopo in the northeast.
The
Pacific
Tsunami Warning Center
said hazardous tsunami
waves were possible
within 300 kilometres of
the epicentre. There were
no immediate reports of
waves being seen and no
reports of damage.
Today’s quake was
centred in the same area
as two earthquakes that
rocked Papua New
Guinea last week.
Telecom operators slash roaming call rate
by up to 40%
New Delhi : Mobile users
will pay less for roaming
from today onwards as
leading operators, Airtel,
Vodafone,
Idea
and
Reliance Communication,
slashed their roaming call
rates by up to 40 per cent
and SMS rates by upto 75
percent.
This rate revision
comes weeks after Telecom
Regulatory Authority of
India, TRAI, had cut
maximum or ceiling rate for
national roaming calls and
SMSes. Now according to
new ceiling rate, telecom
companies can only charge
maximum of Rs 1.15 per
minute for STD calls on
roaming. Earlier, telecom
companies were charging
Rs 1.50 per minute on
roaming.
SMS alerts
on weather,
disaster
helped 1
crore
farmers:
Govt
New Delhi : The Centre has
said that the SMS-related
alert system launched by it
to disseminate weather and
disaster-related information
to farmers have helped over
one crore people in the
country. Science and
Technology Minister Harsh
Vardhan informed this to the
Rajya Sabha yesterday.
He
said
that
Grameen Krishi Mausam
Seva
of
ESSO-IMD
provides crop specific
advisories to farmers at
district level twice a week
through different mediums
like radio, television, print
among others. The Minister
said, 1 crore 27 lakh
farmers have directly
subscribed
to
agrometeorological advisories
to
take
preventive
measures
before
calamities.
Mr Harsh Vardhan
informed that due to prior
information provided during
cyclone Hudhudin in
October last year, around
19 lakh farmers in Andhra
Pradesh,
Telangana,
Odisha,
Bihar
and
Jharkhand, to take possible
preventive measures to
safeguard their crops. He
said, similar alerts and
warnings
issued
in
association with cyclone
NILOFAR in Gujrat during
October 2014 had benefited
around two lakh farmers.
Similarly, an operator can
charge a maximum of 80
paise per minute for a local
call instead of Re 1. TRAI
has also reduced National
SMS ceiling rate from Rs
1.50 to 38 paise. Now a
subscriber can be charged
a maximum of 25 paise
instead of One rupee
local SMS.
Country’s largest
mobile operator Bharti Airtel
said its incoming call rates
is reduced by up to 40 per
cent and the outgoing local
call rates are reduced by up
to 20 per cent whereas the
outgoing inter circle call
rates will see a decline of up
to 23 per cent.
Airtel has reduced
the outgoing local SMS rate
by up to 75 per cent.
Second largest operator
Vodafone said for receiving
calls customers will now
have to pay 45 paise per
minute instead of earlier 75
paise per minute a cut of 40
per cent. Vodafone said
that outgoing local calls will
be charged 80 paise now
instead of Rs 1 and STD
calls will be charged at Rs
1.15 per minute as
compared to Rs 1.50 per
minute, earlier. For a local
SMS while on roaming,
users will pay 25 paise as
compared to Re 1; and for
STD SMS, 38 paise will be
charged instead of Rs 1.50,
earlier. Similarly, Idea
Cellular and Reliance
Communications reduced
roaming call rates by 40 per
cent.
