August / September 2012 Stanley Tribute officially launched Earth, wind, fire and water are the themes for a sculpture created to say thank you to the emergency services volunteers and workers who kept the Stanley community safe during the devastating fires of 2009. The Stanley Fire Fighter’s Tribute was officially launched on July 28 by Dr Bill Sykes MP. Stanley artist Janet Sutherland describes her motivation for the unique design, which includes a fire pit and the figure of a burnt leaf which moves in the wind.“We need fire to live, we need fire to heat, we need it to cook. It’s also a way of bringing communities together to sit and talk around a fire. But fire can become a monster as we experienced. And we really wanted to have a space where people can come back and be reflective about that.” The sculpture was funded by the Federal and Victorian Governments as part of a project to honour those who died in the Black Saturday fires and pay tribute to the people involved in the recovery effort.
