A 16
Three Chords
and the Truth
By Ronnie Narmour

A call to arms…
I am really impressed with the response we’ve
received from the many local artists who want
to be involved in our Music From the Moon
project. In case you missed my last couple of
columns, Island Moon editor, Dale Rankin,
and I have decided to produce a compilation CD
of Gulf Coast musicians. We put out a call for
any and all interested parties to submit original
songs to be considered for this recording. And
answer the call they did! But, we still want as
many of your original tunes as possible, so
we’ll continue to spread the word and collect
entries for a couple more weeks. Being that the
Moon is distributed primarily on Padre Island
and Port Aransas, we still need to get the word
out in Corpus, Aransas Pass, Ingleside, Flour
Bluff and Rockport, etc. Please help us spread
the word!
Jesse Dayton…
On Saturday, we loaded
up early headed down to
Whataburger Field for
the big Ziegfest show. We
got there in time to hear
the great honky tonker,
Jesse Dayton (Austin,
TX) play a half dozen
songs. I’d never seen
Jesse on a big, big stage
but it suited him well.
That boy has star quality
Jesse Dayton
played Ziegfest written all over him. The
festival was actually
2012 last weekend. out on the playing field
where the Hook’s play.
It’s a super nice facility and it was cool being
out there in left field (hold the jokes.) They had
two massive stages going alternating bands
back and forth between them, with no down
time. The festival didn’t draw more than a 1000
people (at best) and it looked pretty sparse in
that huge, cavernous facility. But I must say, the
sound and stage production was first class as
was the programming. Live music guru, Casey
Lane, did another outstanding job of putting
together this bill.

Black Joe Lewis & the Honey Bears…
Joe Taylor’s (Stephenville, TX) set. The great
Max Stalling (Dallas, TX) had played the
Third Coast Theater in Port A that night and
showed up later at the Porch. That was a treat. I
had hoped to hear Taylor’s new Hidalgo Street
but got there too late. Well, there’s always next
season… since this was the last show at the
Porch Larry Joe will play until 2013. By the
way, in case you’re counting, that’s eight bands
I saw on Saturday night.
Todd Dorn and the Sea Drifters played the
Chili Cook Off at Sharkeys last weekend.
Black Joe Lewis and the Honey Bears
played Ziegfest.
Next up was Black Joe Lewis and the Honey
Bears (Austin, TX). I was initially excited
about seeing this band. I heard he was the next
big thing and to pay attention to him. I did…
but I wasn’t that impressed. The band had two
horn players that got lost in a way too loud
and overbearing guitar mix. All of his songs
sounded the same. It had elements of blues,
funk and soul but wasn’t. It was boring is what
it was. I thought his set would never end.
(Port Aransas, TX), Todd Dorn and the Sea
Drifters (San Antonio, TX) and Bonnie Lang
(San Antonio, TX). I got there too late to see
the aspiring Melissa Brooke but I was told that
her show rocked… it had to with a band that
featured Woodie Lawson and L. Leon Sands.
I did catch my pal Todd Dorn though. Dorn ran
through his songbook of laid back “island style”
country faves and put on a great show. Bonnie
Lang took the stage next. She has a “country
meets the blues” in a hot blonde delivery that
really demands your attention. Her songs are
jumping and her delivery is scorching. She’s
one fire cracker!
Larry Joe Taylor/ Max Stalling
Shooter Jennings…
Larry Joe Taylor, Max Stalling and Joe
Fortini performed at the Back Porch last
Saturday night.
After Sharkey’s, I actually made it to the
Back Porch in time to catch the last of Larry
Shooter Jennings performed at Ziegfest.
Shooter Jennings (Nashville, TN and Los
Angeles, CA) followed Black Joe Lewis and
took the big stage just as the sun was setting.
Thirty-three year old, Jennings is the son of
country music icons Waylon Jennings and
Jessi Colter. He has seven studio recording out
since 2001. He’s got an outlaw country meets
the big city sound and it’s GOOD stuff. More
people had started to show up at the festival
and Jennings’ performance really picked up
the pace. I’d love to catch this guy in a smaller
venue sometime. He’s got a great voice and a
cool vibe.
After Jesse Dayton, the Ian Moore Band
(Seattle, WA) stepped up to the plate on the big
Ziegenbock Stage. Moore is an Austin native
that I’d seen dozens of times. At one point,
he was the guitarist for Joe Ely but did enjoy
a successful solo career even being picked up
by Capricorn Records and winning many of
the “best of” Austin music awards. I remember
when he was the long haired blues wiz at the
time when Stevie Ray and Eric Johnson
were on fire. Then he started playing a more
acoustic thing and moved to Seattle to pursue
the singer-songwriter version of himself. But, at
this Ziegfest show, it was back to basics playing
nothing but blues. Moore has always been a
Freddy King disciple and his performance
had Freddy written all over it. Ian Moore is
undoubtedly one of the finest blues guitarist in
the country and it was an extreme pleasure to
see him again.
Todd Dorn/ Bonnie Lang…
Bonnie Lang performed at the Sharkey’s
Chili Cook Off on Saturday.
We opted out of the last two acts at Ziegfest (Bob
Schneider and Pat Green) since I’d seen and
reported on them quite a few times, and headed
back to the island to catch part of the Sharkey’s
Chili Cook Off show featuring Melissa Brooke

Bring your folding chairs and ice chests for this
dog friendly, family event. Also on Friday, our
old pal, Ruben V (San Antonio, TX) will bring
his guitar wizardry to to the Back Porch. And on
Saturday, Texas Music Awards winner, Thomas
Michael Riley will be there. Next weekend
at the Porch will be the tenth annual Coastal
Bender, put on each year by Kevin Higgins and
the Dust Devils. This perennial event is where
herds of manic Dust Devil fans from central
Texas (known as Storm Chasers) show up and
party their collective booties off. This year, the
Mighty Orq, a power trio from Houston, will
be their featured band on Friday night.
And that’s the truth!
