Beginning this Monday,
February 14, Hwy 12
will be CLOSED from
Whalebone Junction to
the intersection of Old
Oregon Inlet Road for
about 30 DAYS. A
single lane of traffic will
reopen asap. Starting
on February 21, a single
lane of traffic will be
open from the Bridge to
Old Oregon Inlet Road.
The project will run
through May 27, 2011.
EXPECT DELAYS OF

Trivia Tidbit, Valentine’s Day:

73% of people who buy flowers for Valentine's
Day are men, while only 27% are women.

About 1 billion Valentine's Day cards are exchanged each year. That's the largest seasonal card
-sending occasion of the year, next to Christmas.

Alexander Graham Bell applied for his patent on the
telephone, an "Improvement in Telegraphy", on Valentine's Day, 1876.

In the Middle Ages, young men and women drew names from a bowl to see
who their valentines would be. They would wear these names on their sleeves
for one week. To wear your heart on your sleeve now means that it is easy for
other people to know how you are feeling.

Sir Alexander Fleming was a young bacteriologist when an accidental discovery
led to one of the great developments of modern medicine. Having left a plate
of staphylococcus bacteria uncovered, Fleming noticed that a mold that had
fallen on the culture had killed many of the bacteria. He identified the mold as
penicillium notatum, similar to the kind found on bread. On February 14, 1929,
Fleming introduced his mold by-product called penicillin to cure bacterial infections.

Teachers will receive the most Valentine's Day cards, followed by children,
mothers, wives, and then, sweethearts. Children ages 6 to 10 exchange more
than 650 million Valentine's cards with teachers, classmates, and family members.

Kinnakeet History Potluck Dinner: February 25 at 6 pm at the AVFD. Please bring a
covered side dish to share; main course will be provided by the Kinnakeet Civic Association. Following dinner, please stay for a discussion on Hatteras Island History with Scott

Waders and Pearls Oyster Roast set for Feb. 26 in Hatteras village: The Waders and Pearls Oyster Roast will be on Saturday, Feb. 26, at the Hatteras Civic Center. In
addition to roasted local oysters, the menu will feature two stewed shrimp dishes – one
cooked the traditional Hatteras village way and one the old-time Kinnakeet way – prepared by island cooks Bonnie Gray, Bonnie and Charles Williams, and Cheryl Austin. Fish
fritters prepared by Ruth Webb and Todd Ballance also will be featured.
Hatteras Island waterman “Tall Bill” VanDruten is the special guest of honor and will be
roasted by friends, family, and fellow watermen. Tickets cost $10, and go on sale Feb. 16
at Nedo’s, Oden’s Dock, and Frisco Rod and Gun. Guests should bring one nonperishable food item for donation to the Hatteras Island Food Pantry to the roast. Tickets can also be reserved by calling Lynne Foster at 252-619-0136.
Guests are encouraged to wear waders (boots) and pearls to the dinner, but are not required to do so. Waders and Pearls will benefit Day at the Docks.
Dare County GOP plans Hatteras precinct meetings: The Dare County Republican Party has planned this year's meetings for the five precincts on Hatteras Island. GOP
Chairman Perry White has scheduled these places and times:
Hatteras, Frisco, and Buxton Precincts will meet at the Frisco Volunteer Fire Department
meeting room, on Highway 12, Frisco, on Saturday, Feb. 19 at 9:30 a.m.
Avon Precinct Republicans will meet at the Avon VFD at 1:30 p.m., and Chicamacomico
Republicans (Rodanthe, Waves and Salvo) will meet at the Salvo VFD at 4:00 p.m.

Know Your Park will feature The Civil War on Hatteras and Ocracoke islands:
The National Park Service Outer Banks Group Know Your Park citizen science program
series continues this winter with a presentation from Civil War historian Drew Pullen on
Monday, Feb. 28, at the Fessenden Center in Buxton at 7:30 p.m. The program is free
and will last approximately one hour.
Civil War activities on Hatteras and Ocracoke islands are a timely topic as the sesquicentennial (150-year anniversary) of these events is fast approaching.
