Hydrocarbon Measurement Info Sheet

FOUNDATIONAL TECHNICAL OIL AND GAS TRAINING
HYDROCARBON MEASUREMENT
SAIT Polytechnic offers a new, unique series of courses on hydrocarbon measurement — the first of its kind in Canada — which will equip
technical personnel to work more effectively in this emerging and growing field. Funded by the Canadian Institute for Hydrocarbon
Measurement, these SAIT courses were collaboratively developed and designed with industry input and by a SAIT team of curriculum
specialists, designers, and subject matter and instructional experts with the MacPhail School of Energy. Learners will be provided with
fundamental knowledge of petroleum measurement (devices, design, operation and maintenance), business reporting, regulatory
requirements, the volume chain and the skills to validate base calculations.
This training will provide technical professionals with foundational hydrocarbon measurement knowledge and improved communication,
problem-solving and decision-making skills that will increase operational efficiency and effectiveness in various aspects of your
company’s hydrocarbon measurement activities.
Who Should Take This Training?
The training will benefit those who are working in engineering, procurement, construction, production, electrical and instrumentation
maintenance, and operations. As well, production accountants, measurement professionals, oil and gas joint-venture specialists, lab
technologists, or anyone in a regulatory, environmental, or business development role will benefit.
Courses Available
The four online courses listed below are currently open for registration and start April 15, 2015. The additional eight online courses and
one hands-on lab will be available soon. If you would like to be notified when the remaining courses will be open for registration, please
subscribe to our email notification list on sait-training.com. Please see the reverse of this sheet for the listing of all courses and
descriptions.

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS
Measurement Fundamentals (INST-124)
Regulations and Standards (INST-136)
This course provides an overview of the fundamental nature of
the business of hydrocarbon measurement. Understanding the
fundamentals of measurement will assist learners in reinforcing
skills for a variety of roles within the oil and gas industry.
This course introduces measurement and its related requirements
and standards used in the upstream and downstream oil and gas
industry. This knowledge will enable learners to comply with
provincial regulations and apply the appropriate standards and
procedures in design, operations and maintenance of oil and gas
facilities.
Measurement Schematics (INST-134)
Steam and Thermal Measurement (INST-139)
This course provides insight into reading and generating
measurement schematics. Schematics are the primary source of
communication between the field and the production accounting
staff in a typical oil and gas company. In the three western
provinces, it is a regulatory requirement that measurement
schematics be built to a specified standard.
This course includes all aspects of metering and instrumentation
used in the production of heavy oil by thermal methods. Topics to
be covered include operational processes, regulatory
expectations and volumetric accounting practices. Knowledge in
this area of hydrocarbon measurement will enable learners to
better understand troubleshooting procedures and design
processes.
Courses Coming Soon
Ancillary and Tertiary Devices (INST-146)
Ancillary and tertiary devices are the end devices in the system.
They assist the operator in reading measurement processes such
as temperature, pressure, density and water cut. Learners will
gain an appreciation of the significance and importance of the
accuracy requirements of these devices.
Custody Transfer (INST-141)
Liquid Measurement (INST-137)
This course provides technical knowledge specifically focused on
liquid meter types, installation, design and configuration practices
used within the oil and gas industry. Knowledge in this area of
hydrocarbon measurement will enhance the learner’s
understanding of liquid measurement applications and design
processes.
This course provides insight into the custody transfer
measurement and examines the importance of accurate
measurement. The impact of inaccuracies and uncertainties in
measurement on financial data is also discussed. Learners will
explore system design, regulatory requirements and testing
procedures that together ensure accurate custody transfer
measurement.
Measurement Device Commissioning and
Maintenance (INST-143)
Gas and Liquid Sampling and Analysis
(INST-144)
Volumetric Allocation and Reporting
(INST-142)
This course provides an overview of how to prepare a
hydrocarbon sample for analysis. Learners will be able to identify
a sampling system and its use in gas and liquid analysis.
Gas Measurement (INST-138)
This course provides technical knowledge specifically focused on
gas metering technology, its installation, design and configuration
practices used within the oil and gas industry. Knowledge in this
area of hydrocarbon measurement will enable learners to better
understand gas measurement applications and design processes.

Measurement devices must be properly commissioned and,
throughout the course of their use, must be maintained at regular
intervals to ensure optimal performance. Learners will gain an
understanding of how measurement devices are commissioned,
and what type of maintenance they may require.
This course provides learners with an overview of how production
and measurement data is validated. The data is used by the
operator's production accountant to satisfy the corporation's
regulatory and joint venture reporting obligations.
