Also special recognition goes to the students who are volunteering to perform on stage. Also, we cannot forget those parents who volunteered to organize a performance representing their country for the International Day Assembly. 3 Parents, faculty, student and administrative representatives from The Bonnie Shultz Scholarship Fund Committee met with the recipient of their financial aid on the Rose Garden campus last week. Eleventh grade students Belle, Palmie , and Ji jI invited the returning students to visit ISE in May. We look forward to continue building relationships with our local community. Success with IB The IB examination session is just around the corner for our Seniors, with the first exams beginning on May 4th. Two years of hard work with IB will culminate with the exams, so preparation is critical at this stage in order to optimize the chances of success. I talked with our IB Diploma candidates about the importance of preparing for the upcoming exams by reviewing and practicing for each subject incrementally and not just cramming before the respective exams. I would like to ask our parents to encourage the IB students to remain diligent in this final stretch. For the grade 11 IB diploma candidates, now is the time to not only continue working hard in all the IB subjects, but it is also time to develop research skills by writing the extended essay, which is excellent preparation for university work. I would like to suggest that parents ask how their son or daughter is doing in IB to find ways to give encouragement and support. Sincerely, Timothy Overacker 4 ISE Grade 7 Social Studies – World Religions Jain Vegetarianism and Basic Philosophy Why do we study other people’s religions and beliefs? Maybe we can learn to tolerate and have more respect for other cultures. This could bring more peace to our world and our future. We have been studying Jainism from India. It’s similar to Buddhism and Hinduism. Jains believe in non-violence, and that all living matter has an eternal soul that is reincarnated. This includes animals, plants, and even insects! Killing anything, including plants and insects, is bad karma and must be avoided. 5 Jains are vegetarians with very strict dietary rules. They will only eat part of a plant without killing the whole plant or tree; such as fruit, tomatoes, squash, legumes, and so on. All root vegetables are forbidden (the whole plant must be killed). Eating grains (wheat and rice) is acceptable because the grain is eaten dried after the whole plant has died, thus releasing its soul. Dairy products must be milked and prepared and eaten all in the same day. There are many more strict rules. It’s a difficult diet to follow, but we tried it for a morning in Mr. Murray’s class with homemade Tomato and Bean Soup. Most students thought it was delicious, but some students didn’t like it at all! Everyone created their own recipes and shared them with the entire class. It was really fun! Here’s a Jain recipe created by Claire Cozic from Grade 7: “Savored Tomatoes” Jain Recipe by Claire Cozic, Grade 7 Social Studies Ingredients: 4 big tomatoes 4 tablespoons of olive oil 1 tablespoon of lime juice 1 tablespoon of fresh cheese (made that day) 12 basil leaves Salt and Pepper to taste Method: 1.Preheat the oven to 200⁰C. With a knife, take away the tomato tails and cut a cross into the middle of each tomato. 2.Mix the fresh cheese, basil leaves, oil, lime juice, salt and pepper in a blender. 3.Place the tomatoes on a heating plate and put it in the oven for 20 minutes. 4.Remove and let the tomatoes cool down for 30 minutes. 5.Take off the tomato skin and place it on a dish. Take the blended mix and pour it on the tomatoes. 6.Put it in the oven for 5 minutes before serving. Enjoy! 6 Eagles Sweep Competition for Regional Cup By Moo Sun Kim Burapha, Thailand - The Eagles played against sister school Rose Garden’s football teams in their annual competition in a best of three matches for the ISE Regional Cup. Our Eagles, who had won the cup last year won again this time around, winning two matches, the High School boys’ team and Middle School girls’ team, out of a possible three. The Middle School girls, who had started first, apparently swept the competition. In the first half of the match, our girls were leading 5-0, and in the second half, 6-0, sealing the Rose Garden’s middle school girl’s team’s fate. Fern Pannakan, jersey number 7, who had scored 4 of the 6 goals, had this to say about her contributions: “How I did it? I’m skilled.” Jersey 23, Brina Pottisit, who scored the rest of the goals, said this about their victory: “That and I supported Fern many times. It feels good to win.” The High School boys were next. After a very pressing offense by the Rose Garden team, and numerous close saves by our hero goalkeeper, Kohei Fujita, striker Shunsuke Fujita, jersey 18, achieved a breakthrough when he scored the first goal. Other striker Roberto Cardano, jersey 10, followed. Leading 2-0 at half-time, the Eagles remained steadfast, winning 6 – 3, despite three goals from the opposition. Kohei Fujita, the man of the match who saved seven potential goals, had this to say about his contributions: “The ball just came to me. I just positioned myself against them and naturally caught them.” Despite the contributions of the above two teams, the Middle School boys’ team did not fare so well, losing 3-2 despite goals from Hugo, jersey 9, and Bill, jersey 22. 7 5th Graders Finish their Thai Architecture Projects After 5th grade students studied traditional Thai architecture and visited the outdoor museum of Ancient Siam (Muang Boran) , they created their own models of Thai “teak wood” houses and temples using cardboard boxes as an art project with Khun Jim and Mr. Hartz. There was quite a variety of designs. 8 Palmie Pie in the Face On Monday March 16, 2015, ISE hold an event call Pie in the Face, in honor of Pi day (14th March 2015). This event is one of the events to help raise money for Habitat for Humanity. We, as members of the community, asked teachers to volunteer to join in this event. There were about 20 teachers who volunteered. The event went very well. The students enjoyed seeing their teachers get pied by their classmates. It was very fun to see teachers got pie. We hope that next year there will be a Pie in the Face event again. 9 Habitat for Humanity Project Habitat for Humanity is an international organization that brings people together to build homes, communities, and hope. Believing that shelter, basically a roof and four walls where we are safe, is a basic need of all human beings, this is the first year that ISE decided to be a part of this tiring yet rewarding project. At the beginning of February, a number of ISE students aimed to raise 80,000 baht by hosting various activities such as pie in the face day, dress down days, and bake sales. By the end of March, through the tremendous amount of effort put in by the students, the Habitat for Humanity Club raised over 80,000 baht that would soon be turned into a shelter for someone in need. In the afternoon of March 20th, we, ten students and two chaperones, departed ISE and headed to Pathumthani, which is the site of the build. Along with students from Ruamrudee International School, we began building a house for a local woman who had two young children but not yet a house of her own. When we arrived at the site, thankfully, the Habitat for Humanity had already put up the poles and the roof of the house for us, so we started the work by mixing cement powder, water, and sand, digging a 60 cm wide 200 cm long and 130 cm deep hole for a septic tank, and building walls up to seven-bricks high. Then on the second and last day, we continued mixing the cement and pouring it onto the ground in order to build the floor. Although it may sound quick and easy, we actually spent over eight hours completing it. Although we didn’t finish building the entire house within two days, the soon-to-be-owner of the house was very thankful to us and we were also very thankful to her and the Habitat for Humanity for giving us new experiences and a chance to create hope for a complete stranger who was in need. At the end of the day, when we looked at our hands, we realized that they haven’t changed at all, but when we looked in front of us, one thing that remarkably changed was the living of a family. Last but not least, we would like to thank everyone because we wouldn’t have been able to make someone’s dreams come true without all your support! Bam Chollabud 10 MRISA Arts Exchange 2015 On Sunday March 15th, thirteen exhausted ISE students and three proud teachers returned from the three day MRISA Arts Exchange, held at Saigon South International School in Ho Chi Minh City. The annual Arts Exchange is an opportunity for talented musicians, dancers, artists, and actors to collaborate with like- minded peers from the eight MRISA schools. This year, the quality of performances and art work that the students produced was some of the very best we have seen. ISE students took part in three specialist workshops for nine hours over the three days. Student’s chose their specialist workshops based on their passions and the skills that they have. In music, they performed three pieces of music with the MRISA Symphony Orchestra, had workshops with sectional coaches, sang in a vocal ensemble, learned to conduct, and learned to sight sing. In drama and dance, students worked with Luka Lesson, an Australian slam poet, to write their own poetry and set it to dance. As well as performing front of stage, students also gained hands on experience with backstage lights and sound. Two ISE students, Analeah Shurtleff and Justin Potisit both gave incredibly powerful and meaningful solo performances of poems that they had written. Visual Arts students collaborated to create installations that filled three white white rooms. The installations explored the use of space, textures, and spacial orientation. In addition to the specialist workshops, students from each school also prepared student-led workshops that they delivered to groups of students from other schools. ISE was represented with imaginative and well prepared workshops. Our highlights were sessions on minimalist musical improvisation, mosaic inception, dramatic tableau, and acapella singing. The Arts Exchange culminated on the Saturday evening with a final performance of the music, poetry, drama, and dance. All of the staff were overwhelmed with the quality of work the students produced in such a short time. The ISE students were excellent ambassadors for our school, all of them demonstrating maturity, passion and talent throughout the event. We can’t wait to take them to ISPP for next year’s exchange.
