All of us start out as students and as we progress, the student becomes the teacher. As more people join our clubs, it is time for us to step up a notch to mentor them. As I travelled throughout the District this past year I met many wonderful Toastmasters who are mentoring others. We learn from those who have paved the path to good communication skills. This is the start on the road to success. Many of you have “Spread Your Wings” and became the communicator you want to be. The members of the Trenton Rescue Mission Gavel Club would like your help with their skill development as Toastmasters “Gaveliers”. This is an opportunity for experienced Toastmasters to deliver prepared and impromptu speeches, give feedback on presentations, and provide positive reinforcement to the Gavel Club Members. The group would benefit from listening to more experienced speakers during their Friday morning meetings. If you are able to present a 5-minute speech from the Better Speaker Series, Successful Club Series, or Leadership Excellence Series, we will place you on the agenda. This Gavel Club began in March of this year. Other Toastmasters who have given their support to the group include Corbett Klein, Elliot Dennis, Fleurette King, Leonie Infantry, Herbert Rheinstrom, and Angie Hee. Talk with these Toastmasters about their experiences with this organization. There is room for you!! As you may recall, Gavel Clubs are a way of providing Toastmasters’ selfimprovement methods and materials to people who may be ineligible for regular membership due to age, inability to pay dues or other circumstances. Gavel Clubs provide Toastmasters members and clubs with an excellent opportunity for community service. They can be found in high schools, colleges, rehabilitation institutions, hospitals and elsewhere. In many ways, Gavel Clubs operate in the same way ordinary Toastmasters clubs do. They have the same club officer titles, use the same communication track manuals and follow similar club meeting protocols. Gavel Club members are not, however, referred to as Toastmasters; they are called "Gaveliers." Gavel Clubs differ in that they have limited access to the leadership track awards and materials, cannot participate in Toastmasters area and district speech contests and do not enjoy many of the privileges and benefits that come with full membership in Toastmasters. How to Form a Gavel Club If you are interested in forming a Gavel Club, your group must meet all of the criteria listed below. Gavel Clubs: « must not be composed of employed adults; « must not be eligible to charter as a regular Toastmasters club; « may include members who are under 18; « must have the approval or endorsement of its host institution; « must use the program, methods, procedures, materials and services of Toastmasters International, whenever possible; and « must apply to Toastmasters International for a Certificate of Affiliation. http://www.toastmasters.org/ Members/MemberExperience/ SatellitePrograms/ GavelClubs.aspx The objective of the Trenton Rescue Mission Gavel Club is to help the residents of the Rescue Mission gain self confidence, leadership, and speaking skills as they re-integrate into society. You will be surprised and very pleased at the skill and earnestness that the members are bringing to the meetings. VOLUME 1, ISSUE 5 Page 5 Best Practices for Division F hosted Youth Leadership —Todd Greenberg More than 150 students graduate from Toastmasters Youth Leadership Program (YLP). Educational Testing Service (ETS) volunteers as the host site for over 150 students participating in a free, 9 week public speaking and leadership program designed to help children gain confidence and skills in both areas. The children participating in the ETS Toastmasters program have been able to turn public speaking from a mortal fear to a lifelong asset. The ETS Office of the Social Investment Fund (OSIF) has supported the YLP for almost 8 straight years. The children, ages 6 to 16, voluntarily participated in a 9-week program mentored by several local Toastmasters Clubs and Club members. Among the participating clubs were: The ETS Toastmasters; the RWJF Toastmasters; Bull Masters; and the Princeton Toastmasters. Members from each club volunteered to lead the YLP every Saturday morning. “After 9 weeks, the graduation program is a tremendous celebration,” says program founder Jean Shipos from the ETS Toastmasters Club. “We have some of the youngest kids up on stage side-by-side with high school age kids. All equally delivering effective, imaginative speeches.” The YLP is operational because of the generosity of ETS and it is the largest program of its kind in the United States. “The only way we have been able to even be operational,” says Shipos, “is because ETS virtually gives us its entire facility at no cost to the children or parents for the entire program.” Every Saturday morning, for 9 weeks from January to April, students are brought to the ETS campus by their parents. The children are organized into age groups and mentors lead them through a series of interactive projects in which the children learned how to address any topic at a moment’s notice; how to write and deliver a speech; how to evaluate another speaker including giving pointers for improvement; and how to listen effectively. Additionally, the children learn the basics of parliamentary procedures and how to fulfill officer positions. Through the YLP students become confident speakers who have taken leadership roles in their school and their community. 14 year old Vignesh Gopal was selected from his school to attend the MUN Conference held in Washington DC. He was given the assignment of representing the USA attended committee sessions for 4 days. At the end of the conference, Vignesh was awarded "Outstanding Delegate". “I could never have done this had I not been prepared to develop and write my thoughts and then to present them as public speeches,” said Gopal. “My success in the MUN Conference is a result of attending the YLP for the past two years.” The YLP began 8 years ago with under 35 children who were the children or grandchildren of ETS employees. Through word of mouth and the generosity of ETS, the program has spread to 150 attendees with a waiting list of over 50 children. Says Shipos, “Each year we receive more and more inquiries about the program and it breaks my heart to have to turn anyone away. But we are at capacity both in facilities and in the 30 volunteers who are leading the program. Some of our mentors travel from Atlantic City and East Stroudsburg, PA to support this effort. That’s true commitment.” Supporting the success of the program are Dr. Todd Greenwood, who combined the Princeton Toastmasters program with the ETS program, and ETS retiree, Rose Mortenson, who cochairs the program yearly. The children who participate represent multiple counties and cities in New Jersey and Pa, and like the mentors, many travel long distances for the opportunity to attend the program. The Levittown Leader published a story about the Doylestown Toastmasters Youth Leadership Program. November 30, 2011 - Most of us would prefer to be the corpse at a funeral, rather than give the eulogy. That popular saying may be an exaggeration, but it captures the panic that besets most of us at the thought of standing in front of a group to speak. "Everyone will see how nervous I am, I'll look like an idiot, I'll sound like a fool!" ♦ Libertarian Toastmasters hosted a weekly video series featuring past World Champions of Public Speaking. ♦ Big Blue Toastmasters held an outdoor meeting in a space provided by the Horticultural Society of Pennsylvania ♦ Delaware County Toastmasters created a joint experience with the Communications Class of Delaware County Community College. Imagine not only conquering that fear, but doing it as a teen—before your first college interview or job interview, maybe even before your first date! That is what Mike Powers, President of the Doylestown Toastmasters club, sets out to do for the young people who attend his classes in public speaking. In our schools, students are often assigned a project culminating in a speech or presentation in front of the class. Good experience, in theory— except that, very often, no speaking skills are taught in conjunction with the assignment. For most students it is an awful experience, repeated all too often throughout their school years and into their work lives. Mr. Powers emphasizes that the Toastmasters technique offers kids and adults alike the skills to speak to and even sway the opinion of the crowd. It then provides the practice in using those skills, combined with honest but positive peer feedback. Learning to receive and give constructive criticism is key to gaining skill and comfort as a speaker. So dedicated is Mr. Powers to helping teens reach their potential as speakers and leaders that he regularly volunteers his time and energy, conducting eight week sessions of the Toastmasters Youth leadership program for teens. Despite his already hectic schedule, he agreed to add a fall class this year at the Fallsington Library. Graduation night on November 9 showcased the impressive skill and progress made during the course. Kids who had spoken so quietly on the first night that they could barely be heard now projected loudly and clearly to the audience. Those who had begun with nervous mannerisms stood poised as they addressed the group. And what did they talk about? These were no fluff pieces. They addressed difficult social issues: Should marijuana be legalized? Should there be a mandatory draft in the USA? What is the significance of the national debt to future generations? Mr. Powers points out that this is not a competition. It's about personal progress and reaching one's own potential. No one will become the next Ronald Reagan in one eight week period, but this course can certainly set one on the path toward overcoming fear and gaining confidence. The parents of the graduates were thrilled with the results of the class and are anxious to have their kids take it again, and to bring siblings. The best tribute, though, came from the students themselves. Without exception, the kids were proud of their progress and happy that they took the course. All agreed: "Mr. Powers is awesome!" Visit the website of Toastmasters International, www.toastmasters.org for more information about the methods. If you'd like to be on our mailing list for information on our next Youth leadership session, send an email to Suzanne Mullin at [email protected] or write to The Levittown Leader, 16 Main St., Fallsington, PA 19054-1109.
