On board were nine passengers and

19. The bus, just in from East Cowes,
had made its first stop at Cross Street
where a lady and two little girls had
the good luck to get off. Charlie then
set off down Union Street with the
remaining passengers, among them
Jack Nunn, 45, a ship’s rigger returning
to Essex after several days working at
East Cowes.

Charlie told the subsequent inquest
how he had driven down Union Street
in third gear, “Everything went well
until I reached the Post Office, when
the bus shot ahead all at once. I tried
the foot brake but there was nothing
there and I pulled the handbrake
as hard as I could and I shut off the
engine.” A witness at the inquest, Reg
Yeldon, told the court, “I was outside
the Post Office. My attention was first
caught by the rolling of the body of
the bus going from side to side, then I
heard a loud noise which I think was
the brakes being applied, or reversing
the gears, and the bus then seemed to
gather speed. It was travelling at about
30 miles an hour, the fastest I’d ever
seen a bus go down the street.”
Edward Stock, another witness,
watched in horror as the bus hurtled
past him, “The driver was going fast
and I wondered if it was going to make
the corner at the bottom at that pace.”
By now lunchtime shoppers were
rooted to the spot, looking on in horror
as the bus careered helplessly down
the road and it was obvious to all that
the bus and its occupants were in
serious trouble. Winifred Teesdale told
the court, “As it got near the bottom
of Union Street I happened to look at
the conductor who was on the bottom
step. The bus got quicker and when
it passed me it was over on its two
nearside wheels.”

could to swing round in to Pier Street.
I got part of the way round but what
happened then I don’t know. I just
trusted to Providence to get round.”
Providence wasn’t enough. Charlie
had no chance and shocked onlookers
saw the bus take the corner practically
on two wheels and then topple over
onto its left-hand side, felling a
lamppost in the process. Jack Nunn
suffered serious head injuries and
was killed instantly, his body ending
up lying on

Yarmouth Old Gaffers
First World War battlefields –
closer than you might think…
Remains from the Great War lie, largely hidden and
unknown, just off our south coast shores. Many are the
final resting place of those who lost their lives when the
vessels sank. Fascinating and moving stories of bravery
and sacrifice surrounding these sites are being revealed
by the Maritime Archaeology Trust through their
Heritage Lottery funded 'Forgotten Wrecks of the First
World War' project.
At the end of this month, Yarmouth town and harbour
will embrace yet another fun filled weekend of
entertainment and interesting things to see and do for
the whole family. The harbour will be filled with the
colourful spectacle of the visiting gaff rigged vessels,
some of which will race in The Solent on Saturday.
There is also a Sunday morning race from the Royal
Solent Yacht Club with the Queen's Jubilee Race.
Over the weekend, there will also be street
entertainment, live music, classic vehicle displays and
lifeboat demonstrations. There is also a craft fair and
continental market in and around Yarmouth town; St
James’ Church will host the colourful Flower Festival,
whilst the McGaffers' Beer Tent holds one of the Isle of
Wight's largest real ale festivals across the weekend.
The Old Gaffers Festival 2015 will take place from
Friday 29th - Sunday 31st May. For further

Until October 2015, you can see some recovered artefacts
and find out about the Forgotten Wrecks in a temporary
exhibition at Sunken Secrets, Fort Victoria. The fouryear project aims to bring together personal and family
information, artefact records, historic and archaeological
research, and tell the stories behind the sites, through
exhibitions like the one at Sunken Secrets and via the
project website, educational materials and public events.
The Maritime Archaeology Trust are keen to hear from
anybody with links to any of the south coast’s First
World War wrecks.
One example is the SS South Western which was
torpedoed south of the Isle of Wight by UB- 59 in March
1918. Only 6 people survived the sinking. The ship
remains on the seabed were only recently positively
identified and the Forgotten Wrecks team are keen
to hear from anyone with links to the ship which was
sailing from Southampton to Saint-Malo, France.

School Journey

At first, I was unsure
about being at the
Studio School as
the thought of being
placed in a new
environment with new
people frightened me.
However, the school has
given me a fresh start
and a second chance to
aim higher. That I cannot regret, but only be grateful
for. Also, looking back at where I was, I have gained a
considerable amount of confidence along the way from
this school. I feel as if this opportunity will teach me
new things, not only about business and work life but
about my career pathways, various skills and the way
I evolve as a person. I have already made memories
that I will be able to keep for a long time, such as The
Boat Show in Southampton, coasteering, the welcoming
atmosphere of both students and teachers and the
enjoyable activities that we learn from, yet enjoy also.

My journey so far has been immensely active, the way
one minute we are in classroom learning about algebra
and the next we are jumping off cliffs! You learn from
outside activities as well as writing in a book. I think
that is very important to remember . Despite this, this
time last year I couldn't imagine doing such daring
activities but I did it and I don't regret a second of it as
I know it will be a clear memory for me to keep for the
future.
Personally, I recommend the Studio School to young
pioneers because it’s a modern scheme with a family
feel. It is giving me the chance to experience what
I missed when I was at my lowest last year and
couldn't even bring myself to go outside. However, the
atmosphere is somewhat tranquil at The Studio School
compared to the off putting rush in the corridors at my
old school. I hated the pressure, but thankfully it has
all been released thanks to this fresh opportunity. It
just shows you that if you are ready for anything, that
anything will be ready for you; you just have to grasp it
with both hands. I needed this new chapter in my life
and I'm glad I turned the page as I can't wait for the
rest of my story to unfold. So far, I’m not being let down.
I can’t wait for what the future has to offer.

•Baring Road is due to be resurfaced
the week commencing Monday 11th
May. A planning application has been
received to develop 11 dwellings on
the site of the Glen in Worsley Road.
A planning application is also pending
for 11 dwellings at land adjacent to
Dottens Farm. Once this application
is received, I will letterdrop to
householders nearby.
•Work to restore the Cowes
Hammerhead Crane has been
postponed due to nesting ravens.
•My grateful thanks go to Richard
from Safesite for going above and
beyond the call of duty for securing the
Frank James Hospital.

ROAD: I have now received the
statistics over the accidents in the
area. Twelve accidents in less than
eight years - I will continue to push
to have some kind of traffic order/
calming in the area.
MENTAL HEALTH STRATEGY: I
attended a large gathering at Lakeside
to consider the most productive way
of using the limited mental health
•The IW Council and IW NHS
were successful in their bid for
Vanguard Grant funding. This money
(upto £10million) will be used for
Community Wellbeing projects.

•Consultation on the future of
Wightcare is due to take place this
month. Providers, including Age
UKwill assist supporting residents
who use the service.

•The IW Council rejected the

resources we have on the Island. Some
good ideas emerged and it appeared
almost everyone was ‘singing from
the same hymn sheet’ with regard to
changes.
MEDINA YARD: I have had
communication from a number of
residents about their concerns. I have
raised these with JTP, the people
dealing with the site. I was pleased
they listened and took action with
regard to the potential problems
including at Bridge Road where you
may not be able to turn right; about
no bus service, which they then began
to negotiate and about coach parking/
drop off areas. There is still contention
over the site.
MEDAL CEREMONY: I was
delighted to attend Ryde Fire Station
and award Cowes man Simon Clarke
with his long service and good conduct

Yellow Welly Fun Day - Bank Holiday May 4th
Cowes RNLI will be open to the public for guided tours from 10am to 4pm with attractions
including instruction on knot-tying. Light refreshments will be available, including homemade cakes, and visitors can try their luck at a Yellow Jar stall. Among games being staged
will be ‘Upcycle a Welly’ where you are invited to decorate the RNLI’s iconic welly. Wellknown local yachtswoman, Natasha Lambert, will be judging. A lifeboat display will be
launched off The Parade at approximately 11am and you will also be able to inspect a local
fire appliance and hear mobile Coastguards talk about their work. Meanwhile, moored on
Trinity Landing will be the Hampshire marine police catamaran.

Taking a closer look at the Island's
golf team…
In June four very
determined young
men will be going for
the elusive gold team
medal at the NatWest
Island Games in
Jersey; a truly ‘Island’
team hailing from
Freshwater, Osborne,
Shanklin and
Westridge Golf Clubs.
The team is led by Darren Masterton. As captain,
Darren brings a wealth of experience to his third games,
having achieved two silver medals in the team and a
fourth in the singles in Bermuda. Darren has been Isle
of Wight Golf Union (IWGU) Island Champion three
times, four times Isle of Wight Golf Alliance Champion
and five times champion at his home club of Osborne.
Ryan Harmer, 19, from Freshwater Bay Golf Club has
captained Hampshire Under 18 team at the England
Golf County finals; played for Hampshire Colts and has
recently debuted for the Hampshire First Team. Like
Darren he’s also had success at his home club winning
the championship there in 2013 and 2014.
Josh Oddy, 17, from Westridge, got his call up last
year to the England Under 16 team in matches
against Scotland and then Ireland. Josh is a two time
winner of the Hampshire Under 16 Championship and
qualified for the matchplay section of the Hampshire
Men’s Championship at the tender age of just 14. At
Westridge Josh won the 2014 Men's and Junior Club
Championships as well as holding the course record at
five under par. Jordan Sundborg, also 17, plays out of
Shanklin and Sandown and was in the England Under
16 Regional Squad from 2011 to 2013. He has also been
a member of the Hampshire Tournament Squad since
2012 and he will be making his debut for the Hampshire
First Team in Guernsey later this year. Jordan currently
holds the Hampshire County Foursomes Championship
partnered by Nat Riddett, as well as being the current
Island Men’s Champion and a three time winner of the
Junior Championship.
Having Island golfers rallying behind them to help
finance their bid for gold, as well as businesses like
Premier Ford Rental providing transport, the team have
every chance of achieving their dream of gold. And you
never know, an individual gold might be with in reach
as well and we haven’t won one of them since Dave
McToldridge in 1993!
Sporting sponsorship powers athletes to the Island Games
Over 200 Island athletes, representing the Island in 12
sports, are being given a helping hand by Wightlink to
get to Jersey by providing complimentary travel across
the Solent. Mark Persad of Wightlink told us more: “We
are really proud to support those competing at the 16th
Natwest Island Games. Wightlink has been supporting
the Isle of Wight team since the start of the games,
which are so vital in showcasing our local talent on an
international platform. We’ll all be rooting for them as
the Games get underway.”
The support is part of the ferry company’s wide-ranging
community sponsorship programme that supports over
50 local organisations. This includes helping young
people and youth organisations, individuals who have
the potential to excel in their area, disadvantaged or

THE JOHN HANNAM INTERVIEW
Megan Turner

Megan Turner is seventeen this month which is something of a miracle in itself. Back in May 1998 she was born
16 weeks premature at St Mary’s Hospital and weighed in at just 1lb 6ozs, which was less than a bag of sugar. Like
any new birth it was a joyous occasion but her parents, Ann and Steve, had been made aware their celebrations might
be cut short as there was only a ten per cent chance she would survive. With Steve as the inspiration and Megan
being a real fighter they remained positive and after many weeks she finally left hospital as a bonny baby of 5lb 6ozs.
Initially she could lay in Steve’s hand.
Apparently, one or two were worried
about this.They had obviously seen him
play as a goalkeeper in Island League
football! Joking aside, he always remained
confident and coped by recording so
much detail including pictures of the
very caring staff and any progress
she made. The nurses at the Neonatal
Intensive Care Unit (NICU) made their
own diary and kept it tied to the incubator,
where she spent the first 10 weeks of her
precious life.
One of the staff wrote on the diary
cover, as if she were Megan. It read:
“Will anyone who looked after me on
my holiday here please make an entry in
my diary.”
Ann still has it and it makes fascinating
reading. There were many scary moments
and the lingering worry that she might be
brain damaged.
Megan has read it once and told me.
“When I read it I got choked up because
they obviously thought so much of tiny
little me. I owe my life to them. They
called themselves my ‘NICU aunties’,
using the initials of their unit.”
Just after Megan came out of hospital
she came live on to my radio show and
managed the odd gurgle. She’s been back
on several occasions and I have enjoyed
watching her progress. When we met
up again for this interview she gave me
a great hug and then didn’t stop talking.
She’s exhilarating company and has so
much energy!
Megan was around the age of five
when her parents explained all about
her dramatic fight for life. They took her

to an event promoting blood donors and
she was the perfect example of how blood
helped her pull through. She needed it
virtually every day of her hospital stay.
Megan explained it in her own unique
way, “Dad was the smart gene, mum was
the crazy gene and the sexy gene was
down to the blood transfusions!”
Originally, it was thought she would
take some time to catch up on normal life
but, luckily, this has long been overcome.
She enjoyed her school days, particularly
at Solent Middle. Over the years her
favourite subjects were History, English
and German. Now she writes poetry.
“I also liked drama but this was kind of
bullied out of me at school but I am hoping
to go back to it,” said Megan.
Currently she’s studying for an office
and administration diploma at the IW
College and next year will be attending
a Performing Arts Level 2 course at the
same venue. Hence her ambition to act,
sing and dance.
“I can flap my arms and warble a bit
so I am hoping to do alright. When I was
at school I was once typecast as a mad
woman!”
Megan, who lives in Cowes, already has
a dream to work permanently at Osborne
House but she has to be eighteen. In
summer she’s a volunteer guide and
loves every minute. Once, a family told
her that she had made their day with her
enthusiasm and knowledge. To Megan,
this kind of comment was worth more
than money.
The Turner family has continually
supported the NICU at St Mary’s. They
are so grateful for all the love and care
that was offered during Megan’s fight for
survival.
Ann has an amazing box of memorabilia.
They had to buy a cat drinking bottle to
feed her with milk. During this delicate
routine she also had a breathing tube in
her mouth. The nappies were made from
breast pads and the bootees were so tiny.
They had a ‘100 Day Party’ for Megan
during her hospital stay. There were also
more fun moments. When she had to go
to Portsmouth, with eye problems, they
had a special passport made which was
stamped on every trip. At one time they
had to shave Megan’s head to get into a
vein and Ann still has the original hair.
When Mum and Dad were out of the
room I picked up one or two secrets from
Megan. Ann turned down a date with Steve
on at least three occasions. Eventually she
relented and he bought her a bunch of red
carnations on their first one, “Now when
Dad buys mum flowers she wonders what
he’s done or broken!”
Over the years, one or two national
magazines have contacted Ann for a
possible story. When they have discovered
that Megan is now perfectly normal, with
no problems, they have not phoned back.
They are just a devoted family and a joy
to be with. Ann told me: “Megan’s a good
friend, great company and a pleasure to
be with.” Steve added: “She’s come a long
way and achieved a lot. I’m really proud
of her.”
I left the last words to Megan: “John,
I still want your job of meeting all those
famous people.” I’d better watch out.

Trend Youth Cafe
proving popular with
after school crowd
Trend, the UK’s first dedicated upcycling youth
cafe is now open on Newport High Street, in the
distinctive former Osbornes’ gentlemen’s outfitters
shop (opposite the Guildhall). Trend is the latest
practical scheme to come from the Island-based
charity The Footprint Trust, who were recently
presented with the Queen’s Award for Voluntary
service to the Isle of Wight community.
Trend Cafe provides a drop-in centre for young people aged
between 11-19 and gives them the opportunity to meet in
a safe environment, with low-cost drinks and snacks. Free
internet access using upcycled computers is available,
and tabletop games and puzzles are proving very popular.
There is a wide range of information available about issues
that affect young people, and a recent mocktail afternoon,
promoting healthy alternatives to alcohol, proved to be
very popular!
Alongside the social opportunities, young people can take
part in upcycling workshops and learn skills in creation,
design and enterprise. Volunteers and guests bring a
broad range of skills into the cafe, and the Footprint Trust
is working with partners to host taster sessions of other
activities available on the Island, such as art workshops
led by artists from Quay Arts. Local businesses have
already come forward, offering help and support, but The
Trust would like to hear from you if you can donate shop
fittings, staff time, materials or would like to buy upcycled
items from the Trend shop.
Speaking on behalf of the Trust, Rachel Brown told the
Beacon about the positive effect on the Island’s youth:
“We are delighted that the first few months of Trend has
proven to be such a success. It gives us a real opportunity
to build on our established work and open up links into
employability by designing and delivering this youth-led
green enterprise project”.

The Royal Pier Hotel And Young Fred Bull
Until 1931 the Royal Pier Hotel stood at the bottom of Union Street in Ryde where today’s
roundabout now stands. Traffic coming down the hill was faced with a notoriously difficult righthand corner into what was then Pier Street, where the hotel stood on the left-hand side. One
afternoon in March 1929, Charlie Wheeler, a driver for the Enterprise bus company, lost control of
his bus as he drove down Union Street. In front of horrified lunchtime shoppers two people were
killed in the crash that followed as Charlie tried in vain to get round the sharp corner.
On board were nine passengers and
the conductor, Fred Bull, aged just
19. The bus, just in from East Cowes,
had made its first stop at Cross Street
where a lady and two little girls had
the good luck to get off. Charlie then
set off down Union Street with the
remaining passengers, among them
Jack Nunn, 45, a ship’s rigger returning
to Essex after several days working at
East Cowes.
Charlie told the subsequent inquest
how he had driven down Union Street
in third gear, “Everything went well
until I reached the Post Office, when
the bus shot ahead all at once. I tried
the foot brake but there was nothing
there and I pulled the handbrake
as hard as I could and I shut off the
engine.” A witness at the inquest, Reg
Yeldon, told the court, “I was outside
the Post Office. My attention was first

caught by the rolling of the body of
the bus going from side to side, then I
heard a loud noise which I think was
the brakes being applied, or reversing
the gears, and the bus then seemed to
gather speed. It was travelling at about
30 miles an hour, the fastest I’d ever
seen a bus go down the street.”
Edward Stock, another witness,
watched in horror as the bus hurtled
past him, “The driver was going fast

and I wondered if it was going to make
the corner at the bottom at that pace.”
By now lunchtime shoppers were
rooted to the spot, looking on in horror
as the bus careered helplessly down
the road and it was obvious to all that
the bus and its occupants were in
serious trouble. Winifred Teesdale told
the court, “As it got near the bottom
of Union Street I happened to look at
the conductor who was on the bottom
step. The bus got quicker and when
it passed me it was over on its two
nearside wheels.”
Charlie took the corner at nearly
30 miles an hour, “I tried the best I
could to swing round in to Pier Street.
I got part of the way round but what
happened then I don’t know. I just
trusted to Providence to get round.”
Providence wasn’t enough. Charlie
had no chance and shocked onlookers
saw the bus take the corner practically
on two wheels and then topple over
onto its left-hand side, felling a
lamppost in the process. Jack Nunn
suffered serious head injuries and
was killed instantly, his body ending
up lying on
the ground in
between the
lamppost and
the bus. Charlie
was pulled from
the wreckage
through the
broken windows,
frightened and
in a serious state
of shock but
somehow with
only superficial
injuries, “All I
know is that I fell
under the bus…

but I was one of the lucky ones.”
He was indeed. Poor Fred Bull was
not so lucky. The 19 year old, one of
a family of 12, and described as “a
promising young lad and a popular
fellow,” was pinned face down on the
road underneath the platform with
much of the weight of the bus resting
on him. Someone had telephoned for
an ambulance and by the time it got
there the crowd had lifted the platform
and pulled him out. He was taken to
Ryde Hospital where he spoke briefly,
complaining of chest pains, but quickly
lapsed into unconsciousness, dying
15 minutes later. He had been a bus
conductor for only twelve weeks.
Back at Pier Street the wrecked bus
lay on its side until mid-afternoon, “Her
ripped front and her battered side with
its broken glass presenting a sorry
sight. A sense of gloom passed over
the town. “
The Inquest jury exonerated Charlie
Wheeler from all blame, describing the
braking system of the bus as “useless.”
They also said something should be
done about the dangerous corner. The
Council, who had twice turned down
the chance to buy the hotel, were
now stung into action. They bought it
for £13,800 and it was demolished in
October 1931. Fred Bull, Jack Nunn
and Pier Street then quietly passed
into history.

Paying care fees under the
new Care Act 2014.
The new Care Act has now come into force and one of the
headlines is that a person can defer selling their house to pay
for care. This seems very reassuring, however there are some
details you may wish to consider to avoid being caught out.
A deferred payment agreement
is an arrangement with the Local
Authority that enables people to
use the value of their homes to help
pay for care home fees. If you are
eligible, the Local Authority will help
pay your care home bills and you can
delay repaying them until you sell or
after you die.
When deferring payments there will
be interest to pay which could be
considerable. There may well be a fee
to set this up and the Local Authority
can charge interest up to a maximum
rate of 2.65% (reviewable every 6
months). Assuming the property is
going to remain empty, that asset is
not going to produce income, unlike
investments for instance. Renting

out the property may be an option
and may ensure more favourable
terms on your home insurance. Most
importantly the legislation is clear
that if a person in need of care has
lost mental capacity, for example
through dementia, the local authority
will only agree to defer payments if
there is an application by someone
with the benefit of a Lasting Power of
Attorney.

that fraudsters may try to take advantage
of these new rules by trying to persuade you
to cash in your pension and hand the money

Watch out particularly for people contacting you out
of the blue or adverts claiming to offer free pension
reviews or no-obligation consultations. Investment scams
can look and sound believable, with smooth-talking
salespeople, slick websites or sophisticated brochures and
prospectuses. This can make it hard to tell them apart
from genuine investment opportunities.
Not everyone is trying to defraud you or con you out of
your money, but just be aware that if something seems to
be too good to be true, it quite possibly is. Be on high alert
and don’t be afraid to say no or put the phone down!

Nigella damascena ‘Love-in-a-mist’
Nigella ‘Love-in-a-mist’ is an old cottage garden
flower, a favourite for scattering wherever
there is a gap in the flower border, but also
good for short-term massed bedding and for
drying. Love-in-a-mist is a vigorous annual that
produces sky-blue flowers, surrounded by a
ruff of slender leaves.
Grow in full sun in any moderately fertile, well
drained soil. Sow seeds in the flowering site in
spring and thin seedlings to 23 cm apart. They
can be sown in autumn for earlier flowers and
should be protected with cloches during the
winter when it is cold and wet. Love-in-a-mist
last for about eight weeks, and it is worth
deadheading or sowing a later batch to extend
the season.
