Swiss Group announces investment in quinoa
A cooperative will be formed with community members
A Swiss private Group yesterday announced the investment of $650 million dollars to be executed
over 10 years, to plant quinoa in four provinces of La Paz.
Antonio Góngora, a representative of “Grupo Agricola IXEQUIN”, who said it also involves Mexican
capital, explained that a cooperative will be formed with landowners in 14 communities in the
provinces of La Paz: Pacajes, Aroma, Gualberto Villarroel and Ingavi.
He said the company will provide capital, technical and technological assistance from soil preparation
to harvesting and the counterpart of the community members will be the land, allowing them to be
"stakeholders" in the project.
A large group of mallkus of the region arrived yesterday in this city, where the symbolic delivery of
machinery was made.
The official inauguration of the project was announced this Sunday in Guaqui, La Paz.
Góngora said that the plan is also to venture into fish farming and analyse what other products can be
grown.
La Paz, Oruro and Potosi departments are the main producers of quinoa in the country.
