And yet, it is important that we listen to their experience as we try to understand what Jesus’ Resurrection means for us. One of my favorite post-Resurrection stories is told in Luke’s Gospel. Two of Jesus’ disciples are walking and talking – and debating – as they walk away from Jerusalem, the place of pain and confusion. They are struggling to find meaning in what they and others have experienced, but they cannot yet do so. As the unrecognized Jesus joins them, they speak of how they experienced Jesus as a mighty prophet, both in what he said and what he did; they also recount the fact of his brutal death. And, they speak about themselves, about their hopes which now seem to have been reduced to nothing. They also tell about the experience of others. Some women experienced something special at the empty tomb of Jesus, and their interpretation was that Jesus was alive; others went to that same empty tomb, but they did not have quite the same experience. Different disciples are at different stages in their journey with and toward the Risen One. Jesus does not immediately step in and interpret for the two disciples what their journey with him means. Instead, he first asks his disciples for their own understanding of what they experienced. So too with us. To go the next step on the journey it is necessary to turn to the Scriptures which help to unravel the meaning. Immersing ourselves in the whole story, from Moses through all the prophets, we understand a little more of Jesus’ life and mission. We see, too, how we are asked to conform our own lives to this journey by living the truth of Jesus. Essential for this journey is the abiding presence of the Risen Christ. As did those first disciples we, too, implore him to stay with us. And he does. He continues to open our eyes by unfolding the Scriptures to us and by making himself known in the breaking of the bread, the Eucharist. No words adequately express our experience of what it is like to have Jesus risen among us. Resurrected life far exceeds all our hopes; it is far more than a happy ending to a tragic story. It is not only what happened to Jesus, but it is already lived by us. It is tasted already now, all along the way, not only at the end of a life’s journey. It is beyond all that we had hoped and even now sets our hearts burning within us. Happy Easter! EASTER SUNDAY EASTER SECOND COLLECTION At today’s Masses, a second collection will benefit our church’s Maintenance Fund. Please help support the upkeep of our beautiful, and sometimes “demanding” church! THANK YOU! Thank you to all those wonderful parishioners who ministered in many ways during this past week by cleaning and decorating the church, serving at our liturgies, and extending hospitality to our guests! We are also grateful to those who helped to decorate the sanctuary by donating for Easter flowers. COFFEE AND DONUTS FELLOWSHIP Our baker is taking off Easter, and so there will not be the usual Sunday morning coffee and donuts after the morning Masses.
