teachers who instruct them. May they
realize that they are the future of the
church; the next generation of disciples.
Dear Parishioners:
Most years there is a break of a few weeks
between Easter and when we begin the
sacrament season of Communion and
Confirmation. Because Easter was so late
this year First Communions began last
week, Confirmation was on Friday
evening, and this weekend we complete
the Communion celebrations.
While the timing makes scheduling
rehearsals a bit of a challenge, it is almost
the perfect follow up from Easter. We
know that one of the post Resurrection
appearances that Jesus made was on the
road to Emmaus, where he joined some of
his disciples who did not recognize him.
They listened to what he had to say but
what enabled them to recognize him was
the meal that they shared. This 'breaking
of the bread' reminded them of the last
supper and through that action they came
to know the risen Lord.
On days of First Communion we are
honored to welcome visitors; some from a
distance, some more local. They come to
be witnesses of these young people
coming to know Jesus in a special way for
the first time in the Eucharist, the
breaking of the bread. The power of that
revelation is reminiscent of the disciples
awakening. For the disciples it was a life
changing event, hopefully for these young
people, the family and friends it will have
the same impact; compelling them to
approach the table of the Lord on a
regular basis.
We rejoice with all those who receive
sacraments during this season; their
families who support them and their
