Ecological Intensification in California: from Science to Practice Spring 2015 Seminar Wednesdays 3:10pm-5pm 2 units (S/U) ENT290-007 CRN 33163 This unique graduate student seminar will explore the science and reality of practices associated with ecological intensification in the context of California agriculture. How can growers maintain yields while minimizing negative environmental impacts? Each week, we will hear from both agricultural practitioners and researchers who will speak to us about practices relevant to water use, nutrient management, plant breeding, pest control and pollination. Students in the course will learn the science behind ecological intensification practices, and will explore, analyze and critique the challenges and benefits associated with these practices for California farmers. One field trip to a local farm will give students the opportunity to see practices in action and gain a better understanding of barriers to adopting new practices.
