Sociology is a social science that involves the study of human society. Sociologists examine
aspects of society and social behavior, including cultures, social institutions, groups and more.
Anthropology also involves the study of people but focuses on humans and their immediate
ancestors. Anthropologists examine patterns of culture and behavior in order to understand human
diversity in the present and past. Students in the sociology and anthropology undergraduate
program have the unique opportunity to take core classes in both disciplines, then select a
concentration in either applied and clinical sociology or anthropology. The graduate program
focuses on applied sociology, a field in which sociological knowledge is used to analyze real-world
situations.

It is with great delight that I convey my interest in the MS Sociology program offered at Valdosta State University. This
program came highly recommended by graduate students and professional colleagues that I have spoken with, who also
mentioned that the curriculum is outstanding. I have taken the liberty of enclosing my resume for your consideration. It
will provide you and your department with my educational background along with my vast amount of experience in the
area of helping people which qualifies me to be a valuable candidate to your program. I graduated with my Bachelor of
Arts Degree in Sociology from Valdosta State University December 7, 2013. It is my hope that your program will allow
me the opportunity to enhance my skills and knowledge so that I can be better equipped for my ultimate goal which is to
address social problems and improve people’s lives. I would appreciate your department taking the time out to review my
credentials.
My interest in applying for this program, first and foremost, comes with a tremendous respect for what Valdosta State
University can potentially offer me. I have been blessed with the opportunity to become acquainted with such an
extraordinary team of Sociology professors during my college journey at VSU who truly demonstrated passion for the
subject matter of Sociology. During the application process, I was thoroughly impressed with the dedication of the
Valdosta State University graduate admission’s team efforts to enlist students. The aspect that I admired most was the
willingness to take the time out of thier busy schedule to answer any questions I had about the program. Dr. Ballard you
and your team efforts have exhibited enthusiasm for the success of current and future students. In addition to the
enthusiasm, I also respect the fact that the host of exceptional professors in the program is more than qualified based on
my research from Fall Semester 2013. I would love to be able to gain more insight from VSU’s faculty members, who
have real world experience on prominent levels – such as you and Dr. Carl Hand. I would be thrilled to gain the
opportunity to have two years with this awesome team of professors. Along with my professors, hard work, and
dedication, I have performed exceptionally well in my major and core classes which resulted in my GPA of 3.70.
Ultimately, I would like to be an addition to your program and excel on every level which in-turn will serve as personal
development for me and add value to your long list of outstanding scholars. Not only do I bring a high GPA of 3.70 but
also I am a campus leader who has been granted access and membership to some of the most prestigious organizations
such as Valdosta-Lowndes County Chamber of Commerce, Valdosta State University National Society of Leadership
Success, Who’s Who Class Among College Students, and VSU Phi Kappa Phi Honorary Society. These experiences have
embedded a solid foundation of leadership, knowledge, etiquette, communications skills, and hands-on experiences which
have all culminated to producing a candidate who is eager, willing, and qualified to continue being educated at a
prestigious institution such as Valdosta State University.

John Isom, The U-Can Man, was a parent who "stood out," too! He was a great role model
for his children and others. Here is a photo taken on 10/10/08 after he read Green Eggs
and Ham to my homeroom. Mr. Isom's inspirational words made a difference in many,
many lives. I am very glad I got to meet him and that he was a part of my
