The afternoon of unforgettable music will begin with Leipzig’s rendition of String Quartet No.
2 in D Major, a light and cheerful piece in four movements written by the Russian composer
Alexander Borodin in 1881 for his wife in celebration of the couple’s 20th wedding anniversary.
Following will be Igor Stravinsky’s Three Pieces for String Quartet, a work composed in 1914
and described by one critic as “audaciously dissonant” yet “wonderfully enjoyable… like the
sound track to a particularly twisted video game.” Also on the program is Richard Wagner’s
gentle Albumblatt (für Cosima Wagner), a composition written for his wife Cosima, daughter of
Franz Liszt. The concert concludes with Premier quatuor in G Minor, Op. 10, composed by whole
tone scale exponent Claude Debussy. It is the maverick French composer’s first and only piece
written for string quartet.
Composed of members Stefan Arzberger on 1st violin, Tilman Büning on 2nd violin, Ivo Bauer
on viola, and Matthias Moosdorf on cello, the Leipzig String Quartet has won global recognition,
including the ARD International Competition in Munich (1991) as well as the Brüder-Busch
Award (1991) and the prestigious Ernst von Siemens Music Prize (1992). Most recently, the
ensemble’s 2014 China tour was honored by multiple “Best Concert of the Year” nominations,
including Music Weekly’s “Best Concert of the Year” (1st Place - Chamber Music category), and
Damai.cn’s “Best Concert of the Year” (2nd Place- Chamber Music category).
