Southern suburbs agreement signals new approach to public
housing in South Australia
Junction Australia today welcomed a State Government decision that will see 600 public
properties moved under the management of the Adelaide-based not-for-profit
organisation.
“The move signals a new approach to public housing in South Australia,” Junction Australia
Chief Executive Officer Graham Brown said.
Under the transfer, Junction Australia will deliver the core services of tenant and asset
management and community engagement with access to leading national expertise.
Mr Brown said the organisation would ensure the Mitchell Park tenants have safe, well
maintained homes within a healthy, inclusive community.
“We look forward to working alongside the residents of Mitchell Park, and with key
businesses, academics and other community service providers to make the area an even
better place to live,” Mr Brown said.
Mr Brown said stable, appropriate and affordable homes provided a ‘launch pad for a good
life’. “The transfer of these properties provides us with an exciting opportunity to
demonstrate a new way forward with public housing,” Mr Brown said.
“While at this stage, the State Government is only transferring responsibility for tenancy
and asset management, we hope that in time we may be able to increase the quality and
supply of housing in the region.”
By shifting the management of public properties to community organisations such as
Junction Australia, tenants can access Commonwealth Rent Assistance they are currently
ineligible for. They will not pay more out-of-pocket rent.
Junction Australia is a trusted and leading provider of quality, affordable housing and
integrated community services and currently manages approximately 1200 dwellings
across SA including 450 homes in Adelaide’s south. The organisation has helped connect
southern suburbs residents with affordable housing and a wide range of social support
services for more than three decades.
