Principal’s Message:
Happy May! We hope that the warm temperatures are here to stay for
a while.
Thank you to all the students who participated in the Spring Concerts
at the end of April. They were a huge success and we appreciate all
the parents, grandparents, and other family members that came out to
watch the events.
The grades 7 and 8 classes are eagerly anticipating their end-of-theyear trips. We expect fond memories that students will remember for
a very long time. Our grade 8’s will head to Quebec City on June 9th,
and return on June 12th, 2015. Our grade 7’s will spend two
nights/three days at Camp Muskoka from June 17th to June 19th, 2015.
Before we know it, our grade 8 graduation will be here. The formal
ceremony begins on 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 24th, followed by a
buffet/meal and then an evening dance. Please remember that if you
are taking your child out on the afternoon of graduation, please ensure
that the office is aware. In addition, please call into the absence line if
your student will not be attending the last day of school (June 25th,
2015).
Thank you to the students, staff, parents, and School Council for
all of your effort and support.
Keep Smiling,
Mr. M.

Kindergarten Orientation Evening
Our Kindergarten Orientation Night will be on Thursday, May 28th from 5:45 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.

parents are welcome.
JWB’s Website
A reminder to keep checking our website for important information.
Included on our website are important dates, newsletters, and links to
teacher websites. Our website address is www.jwb.hdsb.ca.
EQAO
EQAO testing will take place for all grades 3 and 6 students during the weeks of May
25th to June 4th (concentrating on administering assessments on May 25th, 26th and
27th for grade 3 classes, and May 27th, 28th, and June 1st for grade 6 classes).
Please help us by making sure that students are here (avoid scheduling appointments),
well rested, and ready to do their best work on the test. Thank you.
School Council’s Corner
The end of the school year is coming and your School Council is busy planning the remaining events for
the 2014/15 school year.
Please mark the following days on your calendars:
Spring Bottle Drive
Please join JWB for our Spring Bottle Drive on Saturday, May 23rd, 2015. This drive will take place
from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Please bring your empty cans and bottles to the JWB parking lot. We will
also be driving around collecting bottles and cans. Please have your cans and bottles out at the bottom
of your driveway by no later than 9:30 a.m.
Year End Fun Fair Celebration
This year’s event is going to be a spectacular one with lots of fun activities for the whole family. In the
meantime, we can tell you a little secret….it may be Spring at John William Boich, but that isn’t going
to stop Princess Elsa from stopping by to say hello at our Fun Fair in June!!! More activities and details
will be revealed in the weeks to come!!!
We are looking for local craftspeople, artisans, and small businesses to participate in our year-end “Fun
Fair Marketplace”. With over 800 attendees at this annual event, this is a great venue to offer your
wares for sale.
Join us on Thursday, June 4th, 2015, from 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Vendor tables are $30 plus a donation
to our silent auction. Please contact Patty Ruggiero at [email protected] for further information or
to secure a table at this fabulous event.
Are You Moving?
We are in the process of confirming staffing requirements for the coming school year. It is imperative
that we have accurate enrollment projections for the Halton District School Board. To that end, we ask
that you please contact the office at (905) 336-1864 if you are planning to move out of the area and have
not yet let us know. We thank you in adance for providing a timely response to this request.
Don’t forget to visit your child’s new school to make sure they are properly registered for September. In
addition, if you have neighbours residing in the John William Boich area with kindergarten-aged
children, please remind them to register for September.
Junior and Senior Eco-Clubs
A huge thank you to our corporate sponsors Vac Aero International and Bericap for their generous
donations to our community garden. Due to their generosity, we have been able to add an additional
raised garden bed, purchase native plantings to attract butterflies and support wildlife, lay maple chip
mulch on our garden pathways and purchase plants for our vegetable garden. A thousand thank-yous!
School Ground Spring Clean-Up: If you can spare some time on Sunday, May 3rd from 9-12pm, we
would love some helping hands to prune and weed some of the areas of the school grounds that are
looking a little too "naturalized". Please bring garden gloves and pruning sheers, if you have them.
Stay tuned for information on our EcoAction Challenge from June 1st - June 5th...
It took a while, but spring has sprung! That means the JWB Community Vegetable garden is in bloom!
We will need help from our families to maintain the garden. If you are interested and available to help
tend to our garden, please see the form attached in the link below. Thanks in advance! Keep in mind,
you help maintain, you get fresh veggies and herbs throughout the summer. We'd also like your
feedback on how to organize it this year. Parent champions are welcome.

Boys Basketball
The boys basketball team finished their season in April. They played some tough teams and ended up in
Tier 2 for the 2nd half of the season. The boys dominated that Tier, coming first place. Unfortunately,
they faced a Tier 1 in the playoffs, Heritage Glen. The boys got off to a slow start and trailed at half
time. They battled back hard to pull within 2, but ended up losing and falling out of the playoffs by 3
points.
Mr. Parker is proud of the growth in not only skill, but confidence and sportsmanship by all members of
the team. Next years returning students will continue to grow and build a strong Jags team. Good luck
to all the 8's as they pursue basketball and other passions in high school.
Way to Go Carter D.!!!
Mr. Parker recently presented at ETFO's ICT conference in Toronto. While there he connected with
many like minded educators who enjoy exploring technology in their classrooms. One presenter, a
teacher librarian from Toronto is a big supporter of Minecraft in the classroom. Through discussion Mr.
Parker was able to share a video of presentation from last year by Carter Davidson in grade 5. Carter
used his free learning time to explore how houses are built. Carter then used Minecraft, paired with
Google Presentations to present his research. Mr. Parker was asked if this video could be shared on a
website, and if Carter could write something about Minecraft. The video and article by Mr. Parker and
Carter can be found here.

Student Absences
Thank you to all the parents who have been using the Parent Portal to record their child(ren)’s absences,
late arrivals, appointments, and/or early dismissals in the system.
We can no longer be accepting verbal or hand-written notes to inform the
office/teachers of a child’s absence, appointment, late arrival, etc.. It is the
expectation of parents to report a student’s time away during school hours
through the School Connects Parent Attendance Portal. This portal can be
accessed either online (hdsb.schoolconnects.com) or by using the toll-free
number (1-877-409-6310).
At each elementary school within the Halton District School Board, the absence check program is there
to assist with student’s safe arrival at school. This daily check is a collaborative effort between the
school and parents to help provide a safety network for our students.
Please note that this system is available for same day absences, etc. up until 9:30 a.m. (15 minutes after
school starts). If you have missed the cut-off for reporting same-day absences, please wait for the
automated telephone call you will receive asking you to confirm that you are aware of your child’s
absence. Please follow the instructions outlined in the automated call. Once you have completed the
call, a message will be sent back to the school. There is no need to call the school to confirm the
absence.
For more information regarding the Parent Portal, please do not hesitate to go to www.hdsb.ca and
check out the link under the “Parent Info” tab.
Thank you for your understanding in this matter.
