There will be a Teacher Appreciation Lunch, Wednesday
May 6th

PTSA is providing the main course, salad and drinks.
Show your appreciation for your Teachers’
Efforts this year and sweeten them up!
Please send in desserts to the library before school starts on Wednesday the 6th. The
regular favorites (cookies, brownies, cakes and pies) will be the perfect finish to the
Teacher Appreciation Lunch! Your help from 12:00 – 1:40 with decorations and setup of
the Library would be much appreciated! Additional help is also needed during the lunch
and clean up until 3:00. Please email Laurie [email protected] to volunteer.
We have a special schedule this week (again) due to testing.

Congratulations to our KIS State History Day contestants and winners! Nine projects and
twelve students from our school represented Windward District on Saturday, April 25, 2015 at
Windward Community College for the 25th Annual Hawaii History Day State Fair.
This year's National History Day theme is Leadership and Legacy in history. Over 8,000 students,
grades 4-12, statewide, participated in the History Day project this school year. They developed
research essays, interpretive displays, performances, documentaries and websites. Nationally,
700,000 students participate each year in activities leading up to The Kenneth E. Behring National
History Day, which will be held June 14-18, 2015, at the University of Maryland, College Park.
The following three projects and five students have the opportunity to represent our state at this
year's National History Day.
Kealani Lui-Kwan, 7th grade, won 2nd place in the junior division (6th-8th grade) for her
performance. Project Title: Senator Daniel Akaka: Leading the Way for the Apology Resolution and
Akaka Bill. In addition, she also received two special awards: Hawaii Labor Heritage Council
Award for outstanding projects in labor history and Hawaii Nikkei History Editorial Board Award for
outstanding use of primary sources in a history day project.
Carissa Mayo and Liv-Annika Solberg Stevenson, 8th grade, won 3rd place in the junior division
(6th-8th grade) for their website. Project Title: One of Marine Conservationist's Greatest Leaders.
Kelci Hooker and Jessie Kinsler, 8th grade, also qualified for national competition with their junior
division (6th-8th grade) website. Project Title: Alfred Nobel: The Road to the Nobel Prize.
Special awards were also given to Macy Carroll and Chloe Kopasz.
Macy Carroll, 7th grade, received the Hawaii Association of School Librarians Award for
excellence in historical research using primary documents and the Hawaii Nikkei History Editorial
Board Award for outstanding use of primary sources in a history day project.
Chloe Kopasz, 8th grade, received the Johanna I. Wurst Award for outstanding projects focusing
on textiles or fashion.
We'd also like to recognize Michael Voss, Jacqueline "Kaiao" Cobeen, Colton Blackmon,
Kalaokahikina Handa, and Madison Maronde. All of our school representatives did a fine job and
we commend them on their hard work, persistence, and efforts!
Our school community is very proud of your efforts, research skills and knowledge gained, and
achievements!!

Kailua Intermediate School is an official DOE lei
collection site for Memorial Day! Please donate lei to
be placed on grave sites at our memorial cemeteries to
the office Friday, May 22d from 7:30 am– 3:30 pm.
All lei should be made of fresh flowers or ti leaves and
measure 20-24 inches long before tying.
