WELCOME MESSAGE FROM HON DR KIM HAMES MLA,
MINISTER FOR TOURISM
AND HON TERRY REDMAN MLA,
MINISTER FOR REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT
SunSmart Karri Valley Triathlon
Welcome to Pemberton for the 2015 SunSmart Karri Valley Triathlon.
Held at the picturesque Karri Valley Resort, this popular event showcases the natural beauty of this part of the South
West region.
Competitors will navigate their way through the fresh waters of Lake Beedelup before cycling under the canopy of the
Karri forest. In the run to the finish line they will be treated to majestic valley views, capping off what is truly a
memorable triathlon experience for all.
The SunSmart Karri Valley Triathlon is proudly supported by the State Government through Tourism WA’s Regional
Events Scheme, which is jointly funded by Royalties for Regions.
Tourism is a vital industry for regional Western Australia. In 2013-14, total visitor spend in the State was $8.3 billion,
$3.5 billion of which was spent in regional WA. In addition to this huge economic impact, tourism delivers social and
cultural benefits for many regional communities.
The State Government’s goal is to see the contribution of regional tourism increase to $4.75 billion by 2020.
Regional events, such as the SunSmart Karri Valley Triathlon, play an important role in achieving that goal because
they attract visitors, help promote a region through media exposure and add vibrancy to regional towns, making them
exciting places to visit, as well as great places to live.
We hope you enjoy the event and we wish all competitors in both the Long and Short Course races the best of luck.

The Wine & Truffle Co.
The complimentary relationship between one of the
world’s rarest gourmet foods and fine Australian wines
was behind our drive to grow and produce great wines
that could sit comfortably alongside our gourmet truffles
in the best restaurants. In 1998, The Wine & Truffle Co
planted 30 acres of wine grapes and established
approximately 50 acres of truffiere with hazel and oak
trees in a magnificent valley of rich karri soils on the
Pemberton side of Manjimup. We also source grapes
from neighbouring and other selected Pemberton
vineyards and our wine making facility is that the Mt
Shadforth winery in Denmark. Respected winemaker
Mark Aitken developed our wine styles. Taking an ‘only
the best will do’ attitude he capitalised on the
characteristics of this unique West Australian wine
region. Our range of quality wines includes the Truffle
Hill Sauvignon Blanc Semillon, Riesling, Chardonnay,
Shiraz, Merlot and Rose. Truffle Hill Wines are proud to
be selected as a 5 star winery in the 2011 edition of the
Australian Wine Companion.

Climbing Trees
A series of fire lookouts were constructed in the top of a few
very tall Karri trees, mainly during the 1930s and 1940s.
These lookouts were a way of spotting fires in the tall Karri
forest. The first Karri fire lookout tower, called the Big Tree,
was constructed in 1938. By 1952, eight tree towers had been
constructed. Today you can still climb some of these lookout
trees and take in their view.
