GAME PREVIEWS
Welcome to the Kilsyth Sports Centre for tonight’s SEABL doubleheader between your Assist PT Cobras and the Hobart Chargers.
The Assist PT Lady Cobras (2-1) sent a message to the rest of the league last
weekend, hammering Sandringham on the road and Frankston at home behind two stellar defensive performances. Holding Sandringham to 57 points
and Frankston to just 51, Sam Woosnam’s team showed they are a force to be
reckoned with on the defensive end. Leading the Lady Cobras on the offensive end has been the pair of Cassie Sant (19.3ppg/8.7rpg) and Steph Cumming (18.0ppg/5.3rpg), with the inside-out combo proving to be a matchup
nightmare early in the season.
The Lady Chargers (2-0) come into tonight’s game following a close home win
over Geelong last Friday night, behind monster games from the US-combo of
Amy Kame (33pts/12reb/3blk) and Kathleen Scheer (25pts/10reb/4blk). Star
guard Izzy Chillcott is expected to return from a one-game absence, giving
the Chargers an extremely high powered trio on the offensive end.
With the Chargers playing red-hot basketball, the Lady Cobras will again
need to lock in on the defensive end. If they can slow Hobart’s trio of Kame,
Scheer and Chillcot and Rosie Moult and Sarah Parsons get out of their early
shooting slumps, the Lady Cobras have a chance to jump ahead of Hobart in
the South Conference standings.
The Assist PT Cobras (2-1) also took care of business last weekend, grinding
out a tough road win over Sandringham before blasting Frankston in their
home opener. Kyle Adnam (21.7ppg/4.0apg) was at his spectacular best
against Frankston, and has taken his game to another level since winning
the Australian Youth Player of the Year award last season, while import Taylor
Cameron recorded a season-high 17-points in the win and has given the Cobras another dimension on the offensive end.
Hobart (0-2) have started the season off slowly, having lost at home to both
Geelong and Sandringham. The Chargers offence has struggled mightily early
on, with import Kyle Hunt (21.5ppg/10.5rpg) producing the majority of Hobart’s offence. Although they have struggled to date, the Chargers have faced
a difficult early season schedule and feature a several talented playmakers
capable of getting hot and pushing the Cobras.
The return of Joel Naburgs gives Kilsyth a big boost on the perimeter, and if
Auryn Macmillan and Tim Lang can return to 2014 form, the Cobras have a
chance to move to 3-1 on the season and remain atop the South Conference.

ASSIST PT LADY COBRAS vs
SANDRINGHAM SABRES - 75-57
ASSIST PT LADY COBRAS vs
FRANKSTON BLUES - 70-51
A lock down defensive display and
big games from Steph Cumming
and Cassie Sant have given the Lady
Cobras their first win of the 2015, a
75-57 victory over Sandringham on
Saturday night.
Leading 20-18 after one period,
the short-handed Cobras blew the
game open over the second and
third quarters, where they outscored
the Sabres 42-24. Sam Woosnam’s
team held Sandringham to just 26.7%
shooting during their game defining
run, spearheaded by outstanding
defensive performances by Cumming
and Rosie Moult.
Cumming held import Brittany Smart
to just nine points over the game’s
final three quarters, while Moult
hounded Alice Kunek into nine turnovers. While the Sabres were coughing up the ball, the Lady Cobras
were making them pay on the other
end, shooting 8/17 from deep while
turning the ball over just four times
for the game.
It was a fine performance by the Lady
Cobras, who had just eight players
in uniform with Sarah Parsons and
Bek O’Donnell both out. Playing with
a small-ball lineup for much of the
game, Kilsyth was a step quicker on
both ends of the court, and their four
turnovers are the fewest since Woosnam took over the reigns as head
coach.
Cumming was on fire from deep for
the Cobras, going 4/8 from distance
and finishing with a game-high 22
points, while Sant dominated inside,
posting a double-double with 19
points and 11 rebounds. Moult ended
with 10 rebounds and three steals
and Chantella Perera provided excellent energy off the bench to finish
with 12 points and five rebounds.
After a big win the night prior, the
Lady Cobras showed no signs of
fatigue in their home opener, riding
another outstanding defensive performance to easily dispose of rivals
Frankston, 70-51.
Holding the Blues to just 9/44 shooting in the first half, the Lady Cobras
took a 13-point lead into the locker
room behind an early double-double
from Cassie Sant. That lead ballooned out to 20 early in the third
period, as Sant and Steph Cumming
combined to reel off nine unanswered points.
A late run fuelled by Maddie Garrick
and Kelly Bowen got the Blues to
within eight points with four minutes
remaining, but that was as close as
they would get, as Kilsyth finished the
game on a 11-0 run to record a key
South Conference victory.
For the second day in a row, Sant and
Steph Cumming were too much to
handle. Sant finished with 21 points
and 12 rebounds, while Cumming
added 15 points, six rebounds and
three assists. Moult pulled down
eight rebounds to go along with her
13 points and Sarah Parsons returned
from a one-game absence to finish
with 10 points, eight rebounds and
five assists.
For the second consecutive day, the
Lady Cobras were able to lock down
some of SEABL’s best scorers, as
Cumming, Moult and Parsons helped
hold Garrick and Bowen to a combined 13/44 shooting.

ASSIST PT COBRAS vs
SANDRINGHAM SABRES - 72-64
When the Assist PT Cobras travelled
to Sandringham on Saturday night, it
had an eerily similar feel to last year’s
South Conference semi final. And
just like in last season’s semi final, it
was the Cobras who put the clamps
on defensively late to escape with a
narrow victory.
Trailing 53-55 heading into the final
period, the Cobras held Sandringham
to just nine points over the game’s
final 10 minutes, with the Sabres
shooting just 3/19 for the quarter.
Struggling all night, Auryn Macmillan
showed up when it mattered most,
making a pair from the line with 2:21
remaining to break a 64-all tie, then
following that with just his second
field goal - a high post jumper - to
put Kilsyth up by five with just over
one minute remaining. From there
the Cobras iced the game from the
foul line to record their first win of the
2015 season.
While the game ended in a defensive
slugfest, both Kilsyth and Sandring-
ham got off to quick starts, with the
Cobras leading 25-23 after one period. With Taylor Cameron hampered
by early foul trouble, Jackson Brazier
came off the bench to provide a major spark for the Cobras, teaming with
Kyle Adnam and Tim Lang to have
their way inside.
After a free flowing first ten minutes,
both teams turned up the defensive
intensity for the remainder of the
game. Though they appeared to be
in control for most of the night, the
Cobras were never able to break the
game open, as the Sabres were able
to answer every run with one of their
own. But in typical Kilsyth fashion,
Rod Popp’s men made just enough
plays offensively late and held the
Sabres to just three points over the
final six minutes.
Tim Lang led the Cobras inside with
16 points and 15 rebounds, while
Adnam and Joel Naburgs each
added 14 points. Brazier finished with
12 points and Cameron scored eight
in just 21 foul-plagued minutes, but
looked truly comfortable for the first
time since arriving from the US earlier
this year.
ASSIST PT COBRAS vs
FRANKSTON BLUES - 91-69
made several impressive defensive
plays.
Electrifying performances from Kyle
Adnam and Taylor Cameron saw the
Cobras cruise to their second win in
as many days, dominating Frankston
from start to finish to win, 91-69.
Adam and Cameron were simply
unstoppable, with the left-right punch
attacking the paint at will, combining
for 44 points and 10 assists.
A welcome sight early in 2015 has
been the production of the Cobras
bench and they were good again,
with Brazier, Stephen O’Brien and Kieran Murphy combining for 15 points.
But the real story from Sunday’s game
was the play of Adnam and Cameron.
Adam finished with a season-high 27
points and is quickly establishing himself as one of the league’s top players, while Cameron went 7/9 from the
field for an ultra-efficient 17 points.
Kilsyth put the game out of reach
early, taking a 15 point lead into
halftime behind Adnam and Cameron’s wizardry. Frankston got to within
12 points midway through the third
quarter, but the Cobras ended the
period on a spectacular 20-6 run to
blow the game out of hand, with Adnam, Cameron and Gerard Leonard
providing the bulk of the damage.
Leonard, who was honoured pregame
for reaching the 300 SEABL game
milestone, played his most productive minutes since mid-2014, filling in
beautifully for the injured Joel Naburgs. The 34-year old veteran finish
with 10 points and five rebounds, and
After struggling shooting the ball
against Sandringham, the Cobras had
no such problems at home, lighting
the Blues up to the tune of 50.7%
shooting from the field, including a
40.9% clip from deep.
