Some Thoughts on the Sidra
BY LAUREN LEVIN
ACHREI MOT-KEDOSHIM
The second of this week’s double Parsha, Parshat
Kedoshim starts in a most unusual fashion. God
tells Moses to teach the upcoming laws to the
Jewish people. We have heard this many a time
before! The change here is the particular phrase
used. All the way through the book of Vayikra
this charge has been given by saying: “Speak to
the children of Israel”, yet here it is “Speak to the
congregation of the children of Israel”. Why is
there an addition of one conspicuous word?
Rashi (1040-1105) explains that Moses taught the
laws of our Parsha in full assembly i.e. the whole
of Israel were present. The Midrash explains how
this differed to the usual way of teaching the oral
law. Generally, Moses would learn the law from
God Himself. Aaron then entered and Moses
recited the lesson to him. Following this, Aaron’s
sons entered and Moses taught them. The elders
then entered and received the teaching and then
the rest of the people. As a result the people
heard it once, the elders twice, and Aaron’s sons
three times and Aaron four times!
This must have been quite a procedure. We can
appreciate why it would have been necessary
to embed and ensure the continuity of the oral
tradition. Yet why on this occasion was the
natural order disrupted? Why was the entire
congregation taught once together?
The Midrash above concludes that the reason is
because our most fundamental rulings of Torah
come from this Parsha and so it was of utmost
importance for everyone to hear it together. A lot
of the laws in Parshat Kedoshim revolve around
our moral standards: being holy, not taking
revenge, love your neighbour as yourself, not
oppressing another - just to name a few.
However it is possible to turn the reasoning of
the Midrash on its head! If these laws are of such
paramount importance, surely they would have
been better internalised if they were taught to
each group individually as per usual?
Breaking the status quo and bringing the whole
nation together would have made quite an
impression. People certainly would have strained
their ears to find out what it was that had required
the different set up. Indeed a powerful and
subtle message was being transmitted through
this set up. For certain laws it was sensible
that the law makers and Kohanim were taught
it in depth, each at his/her own level, and then
heard it several times. For the general public it
sufficed to hear it once. However for these laws,
everyone was equal. They did not need to be
taught with any allegorical interpretations, they
needed to be internalised for their most simple
meaning. Every single member of the public and
its leadership can and must strive to be ‘holy’
and to keep this golden standard of morality.
By the entire assembly being present, they were
made aware of the trust and belief that God has
in their capabilities. When we read the opening
verse and the list of laws that ensues, we too are
reminded of both the uncompromising standards
we must hold for ourselves, and the unwavering
belief we must have in the community around us
to achieve these values as well.
