Quarters “C” and Naval Base Kitsap Bremerton
Built in 1896 as the residence of the commandant of the Puget Sound Naval Station, Quarters “C” is the centerpiece of the fifteen homes that
comprise Officers’ Row, now a National Register Historic District. This
elegant 10,000 square-foot neo-classical home has many stories to tell,
including of visits from Franklin Roosevelt. Julie Ruth, wife of Navy
Northwest Regional Commander Rear Admiral Jeffrey Ruth, will
graciously open her home for us to tour and hear its history. We will travel
by bus to get an overview of Naval Base Kitsap Bremerton and see other
historic homes and buildings that date back to the beginnings of this
significant naval installation. A pub lunch on the base will follow.
Date: Thursday, April 16
Time: 10 a.m.
Cost: $15 for lunch
Space is limited. There is no cost for
tours of US Naval facilities.

Filipino American Community Hall, Bainbridge Island
2nd course
Since 1943, the Filipino American Community Hall on Bainbridge Island — the
earliest Filipino Community Hall in Washington — has served as the cultural
center of the island’s community of Filipino American and Native American
ancestry and has helped meet the needs of the island’s Filipino berry farmers.
From 1928 until 1941, the hall served the island’s agricultural community as the
Bainbridge Island Fair Hall. Listed in the National Park Services Register of
Historic Places in 1995, the hall continues as a gathering place for many local clubs
and organizations. Pinky

Founded by Daniel Hinkley and Robert Jones in 1987, Heronswood Garden has earned
a reputation as one of the world’s most unique gardens. The garden suffered from neglect
after being sold in 2006, but is now enjoys a rebirth under Dan’s direction and with the
support of the S’Klallam Port Gamble Foundation, who purchased the garden in 2012.
How fortunate we are to have this treasure in

Victory Memorial Masonic Temple, Bremerton
The first Masonic lodge in Bremerton was chartered in 1902. Several other lodges
followed. Many members were Navy and civilian personnel. Pioneers such as William
Callow, Admiral Luther Gregory, Admiral Robert Coontz, and General Joseph Pendleton
helped establish the Victory Memorial Temple, built in 1920 at a cost of close to $100,000.
Designed by Seattle architect George W. Lawton (who also designed buildings at Retsil),
the neo-classical building is still used for its intended purpose of large business and social
gatherings. Described as “magnificent” when
it opened, the temple features 38 Ionic pillars

Powsleys, who were Native Americans, shared
the area in the 1880s and together greeted many
pioneer families as they landed at this point on the last leg of their journey to establish
homes in the wilderness. In the early 1900s there was a need for additional services for
veterans of the Civil War. A new veterans home was planned, and, with considerable
community support, Mitchell’s Point was selected as the location. Retsil officially opened
in 1910, welcoming 127 veterans of several conflicts and their wives. We’ll learn more
history about the beginnings of Retsil, and a walk through grounds and cemetery will
give us a sense of the many who lived and have been honored on this site.

Historic Boats El Primero and MV Kirkland
Ship ahoy! Join us on the Bremerton waterfront to be awash in naval history.
A steam yacht built in 1893, El Primero was once considered one of the most luxurious yachts
on the West Coast and was one of the few steam yachts to operate on Puget Sound. The yacht
has since been converted to diesel, but has remained operational and is proudly berthed at the
Bremerton Marina.
Berthed nearby is the MV Kirkland, a wooden-hulled car ferry built in 1924 that served
passengers all over the Pacific Northwest. The vessel spent much of her career on the Columbia
River and on Puget Sound and finally served as a tour boat on Lake Washington. She was used by the US Navy to lay mines
in World War II. The Kirkland is listed on the Washington Historic Register and the National Register of Historic Places.
After an engine fire in 2010 that ended its commercial service, the Kirkland has its second wind as an event venue, thanks to
Captain Christian Lee Lint, who owns and
has restored both the MV Kirkland and the

Pheasant Fields Farm Fall Festival
Come to the farm! A family farm for over fifty years, Pheasant Fields Farm on Clear Creek
Road is owned and operated by Nikki and Allen Johanson. The farm was originally part of a
homestead purchased by Pete Peterson, a logger, in 1885. His nephew, Conrad Peterson, developed it as an egg ranch in the early 1900s. Nikki’s parents, George and Margaret Juricich,
purchased the farm in 1949 and retired from the egg business in 1980. Since then the farm
has become more diversified by adding other
animals and larger-scale vegetable production.
October is a beautiful time for the farm with fall
colors in the fields and a popular corn maze for
the public — and us — to enjoy. Nikki and
Allen will offer tours of the farm and share more
of its history with photos and family stories.
Lunch will be a catered meal on the farm.
