Business, Conflict & Peace
Course
Course Topic
Businesses are commonly seen as the ‘bad
guys’ in conflict-affected contexts. However,
the roles businesses play in such environments
are more complex. While some companies
have been accused of committing human
rights violations and exacerbating conflicts,
others have been commended for advocating
a peaceful resolution to conflict or actively
engaging in international peace initiatives.
One factor that heavily influences the way in
which businesses operate in conflict contexts
is their relationship to other actors like home
states, host states, non-state armed actors,
other businesses and NGOs.
This course focuses on the conceptual, policy
and practical challenges of examining the
role(s) of business in conflict and peace. It
explores and critically discusses:
–Relevant concepts and theoretical challenges on business, conflict and peace
–The role of multi-stakeholder initiatives
and policies in shaping international debates
and practices
–Practical insights on state, company and civil society engagement in actual case studies
Course methodologies include expert inputs,
peer exchange, case studies, exercises, skills
training and self-study.
