Background:
Kupuisanonprofit501(c)(3)organizationbasedoutofHonolulu,Hawaii.The
organization’smissionistoempoweryouthtoservetheircommunitiesthroughcharacter‐
building,service‐learning,andenvironmentalstewardshipopportunitiesthatencourage
ponowithKeAkua,selfandothers.KupuprovidesahomeorganizationfortheHawaii
YouthConservationCorps,CommunityU,RISEandE2Uprograms.Throughitsvarious
programs,Kupuprovidesexperientialeducation,aswellasjobtraining,leadership,
teamwork,andlifeskillsdevelopmentopportunitiestohelpyouthandyoungadults
succeedinlifeandencouragethemtoservetheircommunities.
KupuGreenJobsTrainingCenter:LocatedatKewaloBasin,Kupu’sexistingfacilityisthe
centerofprogramsthatbuildupyouthandthesurroundingcommunity.Onceanareaof
crime,drugsandhomelessness,thefacilityisnowaplacethatbreatheslifebackintothe
communitybyprovidingtrainingandleadershipopportunitiestoHawaii’syouth,including
thosewhowereoncewithouthopeandarenowbuildingabrighterfuture.Kupuenvisions
renovatingthecurrentfacilitytoimproveandexpandtheimpactofprogramsstatewide,as
wellascreatesynergisticopportunitiesforthecommunitytoutilizethespace.Itwillbe
usedtoeducatethebroadercommunityaboutconservationandsustainabilityandequip
youthwiththeskillsneededtofacilitatethegrowthofthegreeneconomy.
KupuplansforthisprojectofrenovatingthefacilityintoaGreenJobsTrainingCenterto
involveinteriorrenovations(noexpansionexceptforpossibleopentent‐likeoutdoor
coverings)whichwillincludethedevelopmentofacommercialkitchen,meetingareas,
possibleconcessionstand,classroomspace,andothergatheringspaces.Thiswillbea
LEED‐certifiedfacility.Siteplansareattached(AttachmentA).
CurrentlytheGroup70isworkingonthedesignphaseandPBRHawaiiisworkingonthe
entitlements.Thedraftenvironmentalassessmentisexpectedtobesubmittedlaterthis
