Staff Accountant Position Description
Kupu is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization which aims to empower youth to serve their
communities through character building, service learning, and environmental stewardship.

skills, life skills, and knowledge to help them become successful as individuals and as part of

Accounting and Finance Department
The accounting and finance department support all Kupu programs and administration,
provides financial reports to program heads, head of organizations, Kupu Board of Directors
and funding partners, plans budgets and forecasting, conducts strategic planning, and liaison
with our outsourced human resources and payroll provider.
Staff Accountant Duties
This is a full-time staff position that reports directly to Director of Finance/Chief Financial Officer
and includes the following duties:














Maintaining fiscal policies to ensure Kupu’s financial health and integrity.
Enhancing financial policies and procedures as well as providing mentorship and
leadership for the overall improvement of the company.
Responsible for implementing accepted accounting principles and procedures in
performing and/or assisting with accounting transactions
Providing financial insight, awareness and recommendations to management.
Effectively and efficiently utilizing QuickBooks for processing all financial related
transactions.
Collecting and compiling vendor receipts and invoices. Collecting and reviewing
payment requests for completeness and accuracy
Tracking and recording all donations, customer/client payment receipts and other
deposits.
Reconciling monthly bank statements and corporate credit card statements.
Assisting with various administrative tasks including preparing invoice packages,
organizing files, mailing documents, and/or interfacing with staff, HYCC team
leaders, program interns, partners and vendors
Assisting with internal reporting to funding partners as well as providing any
additional financial reporting including private contracts, Federal, State and local
government agencies reports.
Assisting with tax reports for various state and federal jurisdictions; as well as, any
special reports requested
Assisting in the preparation of the annual budget by assembling initial data and
reviewing data compiled by various programs
Assisting auditors by supplying necessary data and information in preparation of the
annual audit as well as ad hoc audits.
Assisting in managing facilities and amenities for staff including overall office utilities,
general office software and equipment needs.

General administrative & clerical duties such as answering phones, filing documents,
etc.
Other related duties to meet the ongoing needs of the organization
Supervisor: Director of Finance/CFO
Qualifications:
 Accounting education from an accredited higher institution is required
 At least 3-5 years of professional accounting or bookkeeping
 At least 1 year of experience with accounting software, including QuickBooks.
 Proficient in Excel and other MS Suite programs
 Demonstrates excellent written and verbal communication skills
 Able to work independently as well as with others effectively
 Conducts self in a professional and ethical manner
 Demonstrates attention to detail and organizational skills
 Team player
 Exhibits a willingness to learn
Preferred Qualities
 Bachelor of Arts or Science degree in Business/Accounting from an accredited higher
institution
 Interest and appreciation for Hawai’i’s environment and the conservation industry
 Experience with financial reporting and/or in a non-profit setting
 Strong time management skills, and ability to complete tasks in a timely manner
 Interest in growing with the company and developing a long-term career
Hours: Approximately 40 office hours per week
Compensation and benefits*:
 $16-$18 per hour, based on experience

 Eligible for 401(k) plan after one year of service and 1,000 hours of service
