A call to Langley residents - opportunities to
show your civic responsibility!
This month Langley residents have the opportunity to demonstrate their
civic responsibility. On 7th May they can vote both for their representative in
Parliament and Langley’s councillors on Slough Borough Council (or if they
live north of the Canal for South Bucks Council). This edition of Around
Langley gives details of those standing for election and the parties whom
they represent. This year, when the nation remembers the sealing of Magna
Carta 800 years ago as the foundation of our civil liberties and since then
the struggle to obtain universal adult suffrage, it seems only appropriate that
everyone should exercise that hard-won right and vote.
Yet exercising civic responsibility goes further than voting for a MP once
every five years. In this edition of Around Langley we give advice on how to
respond to anti-social behaviour by reporting to the Council and the Police,
but also by participating in a litter picking exercise. We also explain how you
can assist your fellow citizens by becoming a Citizen’s Advice volunteer.
Since it first appeared three years ago Around Langley has raised a number
of issues concerned with improving the quality of life of Langley residents.
This month we outline the Borough Council’s Planning Policy and its
Enforcement. As part of that planning policy we also list the listed buildings
dating from Langley’s historic past.
What can you do to improve the quality of life of yourself and your
neighbours? We would love to hear your suggestions.

“Litter Pick” in Langley
As you walk around Langley you will see all
sorts of rubbish, such as drink cans, cigarette
butts and paper bags, dropped along the side
of the roads and footpaths
All this rubbish makes Langley look untidy.
Langley Neighbourhood Forum is organising a
“Litter Pick” on Saturday 2nd May – maybe the
first of several. Everyone is welcome to join in,
whether or not they are members of the
Forum. Depending on the number of people
willing to come and pick up litter, it is
suggested that the litter picking should start
in areas such as the Memorial Park, the Green
Drive Pathway and Halkingcroft Woods.
Slough Borough Council will provide litter
pickers, bags, gloves, etc. for the collection of
the litter and will arrange for picking up the
full bags. Please come along and help.
A representative of Frimley Health NHS
Foundation Trust has been invited to speak at
the Forum immediately following the AGM
about developments at Wexham Park
Hospital since Frimley took on responsibility
for Wexham Park and Heatherwood Hospitals.
Further details next month.
Separately the Friends of Slough Canal
organise a litter pick up along the canal on the
first Sunday of each month. They also
sowed seeds along the canal bank to make it
look better. If you wish to assist please
contact
[email protected].
More helping hands are always welcome.
Langley Neighbourhood Forum would
welcome suggestions as to how we all, as
members of the Langley community, can
improve the quality of life of ourselves and our
neighbours. The forum would also welcome
suggestions about topics of interest to the
However, it would be so much better if
Langley people did not drop litter or leave
rubbish behind. Please be an example to
others by not dropping litter or by picking up
litter that others have dropped so that we can
be proud of our Langley environment

Listed Buildings in Langley
St Mary’s Church is the only Grade 1 listed
building in Langley. However there are a
number of Grade 2 listed buildings. These
include the Harrow, the West Block and
Chapel at St Bernard’s Convent, the Red Lion,
the old and new almshouses (even numbers 4
– 18 on St Mary’s Road), the Chest tomb, Ive
tomb, Houblone tomb, Seymour tomb and
Webb tomb in St Mary’s Churchyard, Langley
Hall and walls around it, Tithe Court and
milestones on London Road.
St Mary’s Church Conservation Area extends
from the Chestnuts to Langley Road and
covers St Mary’s Church and its Churchyard,
the Red Lion, the original old and new
almshouses and houses in Padstow Close.
Open Days at St Mary’s and the
Kedermister Library
The south chapel was built in the 1630’s to
provide a private pew for the Kedermister
family. The Kedermister Library was given in
1623 and housed in the current building in
1631 when Sir John Kedermister’s will
allocated a number of additional books for the
benefit of “Ministers of the said town of
Langley and such other of the County of
Buckingham as resort thereto”.
The original vellum catalogue dated 1638 still
hangs there. The heraldic overmantle to the
fire place provides a focus for the sumptuous
painting of the room, which is lined with
bookshelves, with doors to each cupboard
decorated inside and out. Most volumes are
theological works in Latin, printed in the late
16th or early 17th century.
St Mary’s Church and the Kedermister Library
will be open between 2.30 and 5.00 pm on
Sunday 3rd May and then on each first
Sunday in the month until September. If you
have not visited it, do come along to see
Langley’s historical heritage.

Pentecost – What’s it all
about?
Spiritual Insights
‘Pentecost’ is one of those strange religious
words that can be rather baffling for those
looking in from the ‘outside’. Call it ‘Whitsun’
and an older generation might have more
idea what it is about. We used to have a
Whitsun Bank Holiday, but that has been
replaced by the two Mondays, at the
beginning and end of May, and the
connection with a Christian religious festival
has been lost.
As explained in the February edition of
Around Langley, the date of Easter varies with
the phases of the moon, and therefore so
does Whitsun or Pentecost, which falls
exactly 7 weeks after Easter, or 50 days from
the Passover Sabbath that precedes Easter;
‘Pentecost’ comes from the Greek word for
‘fiftieth day’.
After Jesus was raised from the dead on the
first Easter Day, he continued to appear to
his disciples for 40 days, until he ascended
into heaven – an event marked by Ascension
Day services in many churches (this year on
Thursday 14th May). He told the disciples to
wait in Jerusalem to receive the promised gift
of the Holy Spirit. That moment came 10
days later, when Jerusalem was full of
pilgrims from all around the Eastern
Mediterranean, for the festival of ‘first fruits’
marking the first harvest of the year.
As the disciples waited and prayed together,
they heard a sound, like a wind rushing into
the room, and saw something like tongues of
flame, that settled on each of them. These
were signs that the Holy Spirit had come to
fill them, to enable them tell the world the
Good News about Jesus. And that’s what
they did, beginning with Peter’s first sermon,
which led to 3000 people becoming believers
that day. You can read the full story in the
Bible, in the Book of Acts, Chapter 2.
Ever since then Christians have celebrated
Pentecost as the ‘birthday’ of the church, and
as a day to receive for ourselves the Holy
Spirit, the inward presence of God, that
enables us to live as followers of Jesus and to
make him known in the world around us.
Why not join us at one of our services on 24th
May, and find out more?

50th Anniversary
7th June 2015
Christ the Worker Church will celebrate their
50th year of worship within the community
on Sunday 7th June at 11.00 am. They would

New Preachers Commissioned
for Langley Churches
A group from the congregations of St Mary’s,
St Francis and Christ the Worker Churches,
together with members from other churches
in the Burnham and Slough Deanery, were
commissioned by the Bishop of Buckingham
at a service at Christ the Worker Church on
18th March and authorised by the Bishop to
preach at churches in the deanery.
The group, which included Andrew Grey, Jess
Horsfall and Anna Thomas-Betts from St
Mary’s, David Raynor from St Francis and
Page 12
Maureen Bush, Cindy Dinsmore and Lynne
Harris from Christ the Worker, had all
attended a training course over a number of
evenings, preached a sermon in both their
own and another church and written an essay
on a given topic. At the service each received
from the Bishop a certificate of authorisation
and a book voucher.
The steps to the altar at Holy Family Church
were decorated on Good Friday (see below)
with a number of items that are associated
with the events of Jesus’ passion and
crucifixion.
The Bishop of Buckingham (Rt Rev Alan
Wilson), Rev Robin Grayson and Langley’s new
preachers.
Good Friday Walk of Witness
On Good Friday members of the
congregations of Langley’s five churches took
part in a walk of witness to remember the
crucifixion of Jesus. The walk started at Christ
the Worker Church on Parlaunt Road, went via
Langley Free Church to end at Holy Family
Church with stops on the way at the Harrow
Market and Trelawney Avenue shops.
Harvest is coming to Langley
It may seem rather early to be thinking about
it, but this year the churches in Langley are
planning something special for Harvest – an
open-air celebration for all the community.
Harvest is celebrated by people of all faiths
and none, and all around the world. It is a time
to be thankful for all the good things we
enjoy, and to recognise our responsibility
towards those who do not have enough,
whether here in our own town, or in the wider
world.
So we would like to invite you to join us on
Saturday 19th September, from 12 noon to 3
pm, in Langley Memorial Park, for fun and
celebration, but also for some thoughtprovoking input.
Some of the people at Harrow Market on the
Walk of Witness

Aid and Christian Concern for One World will
be talking to us about food issues, both

doorstep, and questions of food security, fair
trade and trade justice on the global scene.
We are also asking local schools to participate
by presenting harvest-themed songs and
artwork.
On 12th May Tracey North of the Marie Curie
Cancer Care Support Organization will give
a talk between 10.30 and 11.00 am about the
work they do in the community supporting
the terminally ill..
There will be a variety of stalls, a bouncy
castle, refreshments, live music – all we need
is for the people of Langley to come along
and join in. So please put the date in your
diary, and look out for more information in
future editions of Around Langley.
Why not come along, make new friends or
volunteer your help? All are welcome.
If you are involved with a business in Langley
and would like to sponsor this event by
making a financial contribution, please

our sponsors will appear in the programme
