Find a safe summer camp with BBB advice
BUFFALO, NY — After
a harsh winter, it may be
hard for some families to
believe it’s already time
to make summer camp
plans. This just might be
the year you decided to
splurge on the best for
your child and BBB of
Upstate New York wants
parents to look beyond
fancy
websites
or
dreams-come-true photos on slick marketing
materials.
When searching for a
summer camp parents
need to know that safety,
health and satisfaction for
children are not just
promises, but a proven
track record before investing in your child’s summer camp experience.
“It could be a camp in
your neighborhood or a
special adventure, but
either way your child’s
summer camp experience should be enriching, safe and fun,” said
Warren Clark, president
of Better Business Bureau of Upstate New
York.
“Every
parent
should feel confident
their camp has invested
in staff training with the
equipment and licensing
needed to meet New York
State health and safety
regulations.”
Regulations for day
and overnight camps
may be different, but either must put your
child’s well-being first.
When choosing a camp,
parents need to use the
same care and common
sense they would use in
evaluating a day care
program. BBB recommends searching for a
camp that provides activities interesting and appropriate for each child’s
age and skill level.
Parents should take
time to also visit camps
to inspect facilities, ask
about staff training and
experience and to find
out how the camp handles medical emergencies. If the child is staying overnight, parents
should be sure to look at
cabins, showers and oth-
er facilities that children
will be using.
Some camps, such as
those organized around a
particular sport, are highly structured and stress
development of specific
skills. Others are more
flexible and give campers
the opportunity to choose
some of their activities.
Your child’s interest and
personality should be
your guide in choosing an
appropriate
program.
Parents should ask how
long a camp has been in
business and check with
parents of past and returning students.
BBB offers the following advice for parents
searching for the right
camp for their child:
Visit the camp before
submitting any payment
to check the location and
recreational facilities. If
the camp is a distance
away, ask about parent
recommendations and
HERKIMER
BOCES
conduct a full online
search for images and
information about the
camp, including checking out their BBB Business Review. Go to
bbb.org to find a Business Review on an individual business. If you
can’t find one, ask BBB
to develop one for you.
Ask about safety procedures, particularly for
water activities, archery
and out-of-camp trips.
Assess the quality and
commitment of the staff.
Ask about fees and
payment deadlines. Is
your deposit refundable?
Are there extra charges
for any activities? Are
meals and transportation offered?
Other questions to
ask:
What is the camper return rate? The counselor
return rate?
What is the camp director’s
background?
How is the staff trained?
Are criminal checks
made for employees and
volunteers? What is the
ratio of campers to staff
members?
Are medical facilities
adequate? Is a nurse or
doctor on site? What are
the procedures for transporting injured or sick
children to medical facilities? Are those facilities
nearby?
What are the safety
rules and how are they
enforced? Does the camp
have appropriate insurance coverage?
Are family visits or
other communications
with campers allowed?
How is homesickness
handled?
Are references from
parents of repeat campers
available? Ask the parents about their child’s
experience and why they
recommend the camp.
Finally, look for camps
that are certified by the
American Camp Association.
ACA-accredited
camps have met up to
300 nationally recognized standards.

Proper lifting for gardeners
by Dr. Leonard Perry,
Horticulture Professor,
University of Vermont
Back injuries are second in the number of injuries, only to fingers
and hands. Most back
injuries come from improper lifting, lowering,
pushing, pulling, and
carrying — all activities
we perform in the garden. Here are some basic
principles which apply to
any means of lifting, lowering, and carrying,
whether at the gym,
home, store, or in the
garden.
They
apply
whether lifting bags of
fertilizer off a shelf, bags
of compost, lifting rocks
or pulling weeds.
• Start slowly, don’t rush,
don’t jerk. Move weights or
objects in an unhurried,
controlled manner.
• Use good form, or
body position. This is
more important than the
amount you can lift. If
you have problems keeping good form, decrease
the weight or get help
from another person or
with some aid as a dolly.
•
Make
sure
to
breathe; the tendency for
some is to hold your
breath when lifting.
• Make sure to keep
your feet all on the
ground, don’t rock back
on your heels.
• Lift with your legs
and not your back. Not
doing so is the main
cause of back injury
when lifting. Lift with
your knees and waist
bent, not your back.
Keep your back straight.
Knees should be directly
above your toes, your
shoulders above your
knees. If this isn’t happening, try taking a
wider stance with feet
further apart, and toes
pointed outward slightly.
• You can look down at
the object to lift, but
when lifting keep the
head in a neutral position looking forward —
not up, not down. This
creates less stress on
your neck muscles.
• Keep objects close to
your body when lifting.
Holding them at arm’s
length increases the
weight on your lower
spine by 15 times. Stand
close to the object when
squatting down to lift.
• If lifting an object,
particularly if heavy,
onto a shelf, keep the object close to you and
walk toward the shelf
rather than stretching
your arms out.
• Be careful when raising objects higher than
your waist, as this can
throw off your balance.
Standing with one foot
slightly ahead of the other may help with balance.
If lifting higher than your
shoulders, you may need
to lift less (if possible), or
use a step ladder.
• Make sure you plan
ahead when lifting where
the object will go. This
avoids twisting improperly, carrying around

• Don’t ignore pain.
The saying of “no pain,
no gain”, doesn’t apply
here. Take time to rest if
your body calls for this.
• If you’ve been sitting,
stretch your muscles
when getting up before
beginning to lift.
• As with any garden
activities, do 15 repetitions or so, then rotate to
another activity. Especially in the case of lifting motions, doing too
many and getting tired
often leads one to start
using the back and lifting improperly.

What would your
mother say?!
When friends divorce
by S.D. Shapiro
In the fast paced 21st
century we’ve traded common sense for the ability
to quickly look up information on the internet. We’ve
forgotten our manners
and civility. How do we
get back to our roots? Can
we get back? Food for
thought . . .
We have all heard the
adage, “50 percent of
marriages end in divorce.” Whether that statistic is true or not or if
the real life stats are closer to 25 out of 100 marriages eventually one of
your married friends will
get divorced.
After you get over the
shock of, “they were the
nicest couple,” and you
start moving on with your
life, you will see the truth;
these two were doomed
from the engagement ring
forward. He wanted to
settle down and she still
wanted to party. Or vice
versa. At the wedding
even the priest put a bet
on how long the marriage
would last.
After much wrangling
with lawyers your friends
are now divorced. The big
question is who do you
stay friends with? Do you
go with him? Or do you go
with her? Logic says you
should
stick
with
whomever
you
have
known the longest. But
what if that friend com-

mitted a heinous act like
adultery that caused the
divorce? Do you continue
to be friends at that point?
Bad mouthing is inevitable. If your friends
divorce you will suffer the
sin of bad mouthing.
Whether it is one divorced friend slandering
the other divorced friend,
“I can’t believe what a (insert your own expletive
deleted here).” It might be
other people bashing
your
newly
divorced
friends. There are two options when experiencing
bad mouthing: ignore it
or pile on. I would err on
the side of saying nothing. Saying nothing will
keep you out of trouble
with everybody.
I once had a friend’s exwife ask if I would help
her break into his garage
and steal one of his golf
clubs. Not the whole set
mind you; just one. The 9
iron. She had a plan complete with timetables,
passwords, and a map. If
she had worked as hard
at relationship on the
front end maybe she
would not have to work
so hard at being vindictive and they might not
be divorced?
If you are the unfortu-
nate (or fortunate, depending on your perspective) participant in divorce proceedings then
you will undoubtedly experience, “the we saw
your ex syndrome.” Inevitably, especially in
small towns, you will experience the “we saw your
ex.” Everybody you know
will become private investigators and will report
back to you without you
ever asking. “I saw your
ex at the bank,” or “They
were at Walmart,” or
“they were with their new
boyfriend,” will fill up
dossiers for you. While
you are trying to move
forward people are unknowingly keeping you
attached to your past.
Divorce sucks. When
people get divorced people on all sides tend to
suffer. Families suffer,
kids suffer, the divorcees
suffer and friends feel it
too. When it comes down
to your friends divorcing
you should support them
when you can. If you cannot support them then
try ignoring them. Stop
and think, “What would
my mother say?” She
would say, “Don’t take
sides. You’ve been friends
for so long.”

Darning is a sewing technique for repairing
holes and worn areas of fabric, using needle and
thread alone. Darning is often done by hand, but
it’s also possible to darn with a sewing machine.
Hand darning employs the darning stitch,
a simple running stitch in which the thread
is “woven” in rows along the grain of the fabric, with the stitcher reversing direction at
the end of each row. Darning is a traditional
method for repairing fabric damage or holes

that do not run along a seam, where patching wont work, such as on the heel of a sock.
A darning egg, like the one pictured below,
is an odd shaped ovoid that is inserted into
the sock to hold it in the proper shape.
The Darning egg can be made of stone,
porcelain, wood, or other similar material. This Darning egg looks like it’s made
of hard maple. When the repairs are finished, the darning egg is removed.

Brides show short wedding gowns more of the love
by Leanne Italie, Associated Press
Helen Bradley isn’t one
of those women who fantasized about her wedding
as a girl, so when the time
came to tie the knot on
the 10th tee of a golf
course, she wanted to be
relaxed, comfortable and
economical. A short gown
was just right for her September nuptials, said the
27-year-old bank worker
in Madison, WI.
“I had tried on a few long
dresses and none of them
felt like me. I’m a very
practical person. My mom
picked out the short dress
from a sale rack and it’s
rare that I would like anything that my mom picks
out,” she said with a laugh.
Once the domain of older or remarrying brides,
short gowns are enjoying
a little more of the love,
from luxury brands like
Monique Lhuillier, Oscar
de la Renta and Marchesa
to more affordable offerings at David’s Bridal. Designers are offering a
greater range of shorter
styles as more brides
break from tradition and
personalize their weddings. “A lot of people are
doing more intimate settings, so a shorter dress
just feels more appropriate. If they do the big wedding, somemchange into a
shorter dress so they can
dance and have a good
time,” Lhuillier said.
Exactly how short is up
to the bride. There are
minis, high-low hemlines,
knee lengths, tea lengths
and so-called “transformers,” where a long train or
sheer skirt detaches to
show off a short dress underneath. Designer Zac
Posen put his own sister in
one of the convertibles in
red for her 2004 wedding.
Long gowns remain the
clear majority of the $2.6
billion-a-year bridal gown
market, noted Darcy
Miller, editorial director
for
Martha
Stewart’s
bridal site. But, “more and
more brides seem to be
seeking no-fuss, lightweight and easier silhouettes,” she said. Some
“want a dress they can
run on the beach in or
travel with to their destination wedding.”
At David’s Bridal, 26 of
the 75 gowns launched for
spring 2015 are short,
said Anne Acierno, executive vice president for design, merchandising and
product
development.
Posen creates luxury
short looks but also includes a few in his Truly
Zac Posen collection at
David’s Bridal. He said
red-carpet trends influence some brides, and
these days they’re seeing

more short, fancy dresses.
Shorter dresses can be
less expensive, a huge factor for Bradley. Her dress
cost $400. She spent another $100 on a chunky
glass statement necklace
with matching earrings,
and $99 for a pair of 4-inch
Calvin Klein heels in dusty
gold with a T-strap and
side buckle. “I’m an accessory person, so I knew
when I saw the dress it was

said. “I could go out and
pick the perfect necklace
and the perfect shoes and
you could see them.”

Don’t forget headlights when performing routine maintenance
(MS) — Veteran and
even novice drivers understand the importance
of visibility when they get
behind the wheel of their
vehicles. When visibility
is not an issue, drivers
can more easily see their
fellow motorists and better anticipate potentially
dangerous situations.
But when visibility is
compromised,
drivers
and their passengers are
vulnerable to a host of
dangers, including inclement weather and aggressive motorists.
Many things can affect
drivers’ visibility on the
road, but those who take
a proactive approach to
improving their visibility
can put themselves in a
better position to handle
any negative situations
that may arise. One of
the ways to do just that
is to pay more attention
to your headlights. Often
overlooked when performing routine vehicle
maintenance, headlights
must be maintained to
ensure optimal visibility
for drivers.
The following are a few
ways drivers can improve the performance of
their headlights to make

• Pay attention to the
headlights’ output. Perhaps the most noticeable
indicator of an aging
headlight is its light output. As bulbs start to
dim, drivers may find
themselves struggling to
see during twilight and
at night. That difficulty
is not necessarily because drivers’ own vision
is failing, but may be a
result of aging bulbs
whose light output is
gradually reduced by the

effects of humidity, electrical resistance and filament fatigue. Drivers
who notice their headlights are not producing
as much light as they
once did should know
that reduced output is a
telltale sign of aging
bulbs that need to be replaced.
• Say “so long” to the
status quo. Recognizing
dimming bulbs is just
the first step toward improving the performance
of your headlights. The
next step is for drivers to
recognize that all head-

light bulbs are not created equal. Instead of replacing existing bulbs
with the same type of
bulbs provided by their
vehicle’s manufacturer,
drivers can vastly improve their visibility by
upgrading to a bulb designed to provide more
light than the standard
halogen bulbs found in
many of today’s vehicles.
• Find the right fit. The
right headlight bulb can
dramatically
improve
visibility when driving at
night, but what’s good
for the goose is not always good for the gander. That’s because motorists drive for various
reasons and on various
roads, so the right bulb
for seniors who don’t often take to the highways
will not necessarily be
the best fit for com-
muters who routinely
drive long distances.
• Let there be light. Regardless of how effective
a bulb has the potential
to be, drivers who don’t
routinely clean their
headlights will continue
to have their visibility
compromised. Certain
preventative measures
can help drivers address
headlight issues before
they appear, ensuring
their visibility is not
compromised.
When
checking your oil in the
driveway or even when
you’re filling up at the
gas station, take a few
moments to inspect your
headlights and address
any issues that arise as
soon as possible.

Dollars and sense
by David Uffington
Endless debt
If you need incentive to
dig deep this year and get
your finances under control, consider a recent
study that concluded that
18 percent of adults ex-
pect to battle debt for the
rest of their lives and die
in debt. The research,
done
by
CreditCards.com, says
that it’s not that we’ve
gone crazy accruing debt,
but that the Great Recession lasted longer than financial experts believe,
which was 2007 to 2009.
For many consumers, the
effects of that recession
are still going on.
With young millennials,
only 6 percent believe
they’ll never get out of

debt. Increase the age to
between 50 and 64, and
that goes up to 22 percent. For seniors age 65
and older, it’s 31 percent.
While the millennials are
optimistic, perhaps they
should note that those
pessimistic seniors likely
thought the same when
they were younger ... that
it was possible to get out
of debt. Their likely target
age to be debt free was 53.
Seniors were hit especially hard during the recession and turned to
their homes to raise
needed cash. Mortgage
debt rose 82 percent,
which means that seniors
who expected to live in a
mortgage-free home are
still making payments.
Since the recession, total debt went down slightly (from 79.7 percent to
77.5 percent), but the
reason was due to writeoffs when the companies
had to cancel debts that
couldn’t be paid. That left
consumers with lower
credit scores, which led
to higher interest rates on
any subsequent loans
they took out. Household
debt went up, while incomes went down.
As has been said many
times in this column, beware believing that financial bad times are over,
even though in your
household they might appear to be. Keep debt as
low as possible. Pay off
debts as quickly as you
can, but don’t disregard
your rate of savings. If
you take a higher deductible for auto or home
insurance to save money,
be sure that deductible
amount is tucked away in
savings. If you can’t pay
off an item in three
months, don’t put it on a
credit card. Swap interest
credit cards for those
with no interest for a period of time and pay off
the other balances. Develop a second source of
income. Shop the sales.
In short, act as though
the Great Recession is
still upon us, because in
some ways, it still is.
