ROCHESTER RSL ANZAC AWARDS
The Spirit of ANZAC Awards which were announced in Rochester on ANZAC
Day were presented at a special dinner in Rochester on Saturday night.
An appreciative audience heard Annette Waters describe her recent trip to
ANZAC Cove where she was one of the audience observing ANZAC Day at
Gallipoli. The mature presentation by this local student was well received
and heartily acknowledged.
RSL President Greg Walkley said “These awards recognise citizenship by
local residents. That service reflects the selfless sacrifices, loyalty to mates
and commitment to principles that was so readily displayed by the first ANZACs. This is the greatest honour we can bestow upon a local citizen in this,
the centenary year of ANZAC”
The awards were presents for citizenship to the school students although
academic prowess and sporting ability may have been contributing factors.
Students were nominated by their respective school principals. Adult recipients had been selected because of their extensive contributions throughout
the community over many years. These contributions had exemplified the
traditional ANZAC Spirit attributes of selflessness, support for
others, integrity, enthusiasm and
leadership by example.

An Italian restaurant in Lockington?
No... Mim Musico has named her
café Maria’s, formerly SALT in
Hopetoun Street, after her adored
late mother, formerly from Calabria,
Italy. So Mim and staff would like to
welcome you when the café is open
Wednesdays to Sundays 8.30 a.m.
to 4.00 p.m. for anything from
breakfast to lunch to after school
snacks, and to enjoy brilliant coffee,
scrumptious desserts (made by
Hann Made Sweets), and ‘the best
feed in town’. Lunch time meals can
be pre ordered, special events and
catering can be arranged by calling
or phoning Mim on 0458 560 789.
Maria’s wish you Buon Appetito,
and happy eating!
GOURMET BEEF IS A WINNER
For about the eighth time Locky
Meats has won first prize in the
regional Sausage King competition,
this time with Gourmet Beef. Bo
said he thought they had missed
out on entering this year’s comp
when he had a phone call querying
why they hadn’t entered. 24 hours
later he and Yvette arrived in
Echuca with the sausages and went
away with the trophy and now await
the date of the State finals which
will be held in Melbourne. All the
best for perhaps State crown No.3
Bo and Yvette.

presentation made by the School students of Gallipoli
listing all those who died as a result of the conflict.
ANZAC service well attended.
Lt. Col. Rod Webster RFD, guest speaker at Lockington’s
ANZAC service was most impressed with the attendance,
including children, and would also have been with the
large number of floral tributes/wreaths which were placed
by 14 organisations and 4 personal. Lt. Webster said,
‘The task of doing justice to the ANZAC is formidable’. ,
and of several examples said, “Formidable because of all
the information available to give an appropriate addressM
suffering and death is beyond words.” How could anyone
have known the impact and what it means to be
Australian? Why celebrate when such colossal loss? The
spirit of the Digger inspires us and defines us. The loyalty,
devotion, audacity and larrikinism are what we celebrate.”
In conclusion we were challenged – “Veterans suffer the
silent battles. The ANZAC spirit is most enduring and
powerful, as a Nation we must keep it alive and carry it
on.” Prior to Lt. Col. Webster’s presentation, Lorraine
Trewick of Elmore, a descendant of George and Harry
Fiedler who whilst in World War 1 sent home postcards,
letters and photos etc., which were on display for the
audience to view. During the service Lorraine read
extracts from a 1918 diary of Private Horace Whinfield,
also an uncle. Segments covered: ‘Five days and nights
of rain, mud and continuous fire... He was a stretcher
bearer through this... Sadly he wrote of his best friend
being killed-He wonders how long men can hang on for,
is too much for mortals? The enemy must surely desire
this fighting to end-The shelling is an awful ordeal to go
through. It puts tremendous strain on the nervous
system.’ School Captains Sarah Jones and Hugh Byrne
took part, Melanie McNair read the poem “Sir”, and Lacey
Rankin, “A Single Poppy”. The colour-bearers were Jamie
Peter Bond, Tiharn Duncan, Lacey Rankin and Ali
Howlett. The service concluded with a music-slide

Thank you for contributing to
Lockington.
The 18th rally for Lockington &
District Living Heritage Complex
is rated as being another great
success, and thanks must go to
the Lockington community and
those who visited, for dollars spent, the many hours of
voluntary service contributed, and of course horses, wagons, cars, motorcycles, stationary engines, farm tractors
and machinery, and vintage trucks which were brought
along to display and run – proving that even though they
were old were still in good working order. A lot of hard
work again paid off. First time visitors and those who
have been before were impressed with the setting of the
rally, the wonderful meals, and the very friendly
atmosphere. We are very fortunate here in Lockington to
have the open display space as well as a warm and dry
shelter inside the Complex. A feature inside the Complex
this year was the display of 1st and 2nd World War
memorabilia for which we thank the Rochester RSL and
members of our community. A special thanks for
assistance by the School in cleaning prior to the rally,
then to our Pre-School, St. Mary’s and Echuca Scouts for
their work in the kitchen. Following the rally President Joe
Chappel was most appreciative to the general public and
some Exhibitors, who stayed at
the Travellers Rest, for their
assistance in cleaning up the
rally site after the event.

THANK YOU
I would like to take this opportunity
to thank my customers for their support of me and the SALT cafe over
the last 2 years I enjoyed my time
owning and running the cafe, with a
lot of support from my staff Vicki,
Sally, Sam and Molly and many
others that have been involved in
the running of the Cafe. I feel that I
need to move on to the next stage
in my life. I'm sure you all are aware
that I have become a grandmother
and have two beautiful grandsons,
that I wasn't getting to see, because
the Cafe was running my life. I have
made many new friendships in this
time which has been wonderful. I
wish Mim all the best and I am sure
the community will continue to support Marie's Cafe.

LOCKINGTON SCHOOL REPORT
I will always be there to help my mates. If I make it home I
will have a huge story to tell.
Spirit of ANZAC Award
Congratulations to Jack Leed who was the recipient of the
Rochester RSL Spirit of ANZAC Award. The award was
handed to a student who displays the qualities consistent
with the ANZAC spirit and for displaying outstanding
citizenship. Jack consistently achieves academically but
along with that he looks out for other students’ wellbeing.
Jack can often be found in the playground helping
younger students and ensuring they have someone to
play with. We are so very proud of Jack for being an
outstanding citizen. Jack will be presented with his award
at a special dinner on Saturday night held by the
Rochester RSL.
Big congratulations to Nick McNair, former students of
LCS who has also been awarded the Spirit of ANZAC
award. It is very much deserved!
Xavier
Bang! I hear the bullets go past.
I am really scared! My mouth is really dry.
I am coughing and I have a runny nose.
It’s like standing in the middle of a mine field and you
don’t know where to go. I look next to me. I see my mate
lying on the ground. He has his hand on his leg. I put his
arm over my knee. I take him to the nurses.
I went back. I wish he would get better.
ANZAC Service
Last Friday’s Anzac
service at LCS was
outstanding. Thank you to
Sean

students who put this

our students were. Well

I’ve got butterflies in my tummy again, I’m so nervous!
I’ve come here to do my duty and my duty is to protect

bodies and stay with the gang. Okay, into the trenches we
go.

I’m scared! But I have to do this for my country. I’m only
eighteen but I can make a difference if I try hard enough.
Bang! Bang! Bang! Ahhhh I’m scared stiff.
Was that gun fire?
I’m hiding in the rubble, I am so scared that I thought I
was going to wee my pants! So now I’m hiding.
I wonder what it’s like at home?

Fun Run
The LCS Fun Run / Cross County was held on Friday. All of the students should
be proud of their efforts. Thank you all of the family and friends who came along
to cheer on the students. Congratulations and good luck to the following
students (pictured below) who have qualified to compete at the Echuca Cross

Jill Sanguinetti grew up in the Victorian country town of Kyabram and went to Methodist
Ladies’ College in Melbourne as a boarder
from 1958 to 1961.
After years as a teacher in schools, community centres and TAFE colleges, her passion
for education led her to undertake a PhD in
adult education policy and women’s education. She spent 10 years lecturing and researching in the School of Education at Victoria University.
Jill divides her time between East Brunswick
and a bush retreat near Marysville where
she is involved in the struggle for forests.
School Days of a
Methodist Lady
A Journey through Girlhood
This book is about a girl,
a school and a family
in Australia
in the 1950s and 60s…
In 1958, Jill left her home in the Victorian
town of Kyabram to attend Methodist Ladies’
College (MLC) as a boarder. In this comingof-age memoir she interleaves her MLC
story with lively vignettes of her early school
years, the family newsagency, church, and
country community life.
WALKING IN THE RAIN
On Friday 17th April former Lockington/
Bamawm residents Felicity Smith and Angela
Hann walked from the Hann family farm on
Prairie road, via Lockington and on to Echuca
– as it turned out a 45km trek in the rain. The
girls have known each other since birth, with
their fathers Eddie Smith and Eddie Hann
going to school together at Lockington Primary School in the 1950s.
Ange and Flick have developed a lifelong
friendship, despite living in Melbourne and
Ocean Grove respectively. It first started from
the early days at Locky pre-school, Locky
swimming pool, their school bus trip to
Echuca attending St Joseph's College together and of course many
hours shared on the tennis court.
Their walking journey allowed the girls to re-live fun childhood memories, visiting many local destinations and seeing friends and family
along the way.
Ange is a true distance warrior and competitor having walked from
Melbourne to Sorrento to raise funds for MS last year, as well as
walking for 24 hours as part of the Relay For Life. Ange will also be
walking the Kokoda Track in July this year. Flick is also an adventurer – planning to walk the Inca Trail in Peru this October.
The walk took 9 hours in total, which included a visit to Lockington
pre-school and a coffee and chat with old friend at the hairdressers
and cafe in town (great coffee!).
The girls finished their walk in Echuca and caught up with family and
friends for some celebratory drinks at the American Hotel.
To see more photos and events from their walk, visit their facebook
page Walk'n'lbe.

LOCKINGTON GOLF CLUB REPORT
April 22: A really good turn up of ladies played a stableford round, with the winner decided by scores on a Secret
9. Phyl Macfarlane was in fine form and returned the
day’s best score of 24 points to win the Player of the Day
voucher, plus B Grade honours.
Pauline Humbert played well to win A Grade with 23. The
9-hole event was won by Yvonne Stansfield with 16, and
it was terrific to have Verna Clymo back having a hit.
Nearest the pins: A Grade – Annette Brereton; B Grade –
Helen Hayes. Competition winner – Kathi Maddison (2
weeks in a row!).
April 25: Steve Holt’s recent rich vein of form continued
with an excellent score of 43 points to win the Pentreaths
Supermarket Player of the Day voucher, plus the Privilege Cup and A Grade honours. Runner-up in A Grade
was Kevin Humbert (39). Des Pentreath maintained his
good form to score 39 points and win B Grade from
Quarry Hill visitor Tim Staley (37), on a countback from
Travis Mancer. Don Muhleisen’s fine score of 40 points
was too good for his younger rivals in C Grade. Tom
Scurrah was runner-up with 39. Yardstick balls for the
next best scores across all grades were won by Travis
Mancer (37), Mat Dennis (36), Terry Thomas, Ian Haines
and Jeff Carnie (all 34). Ian Haines was 1-under the card
after 7 holes but his scintillating start for a 17-handicapper
sadly faded – a nomination for the Choker’s Trophy
perhaps? Nearest the pins: 3rd – Ian Haines; 2nd shot 11th
– Grant Humbert; 2nd shot 18th for the 6-pack smack –
Tim Staley. Neither the Echuca CIH eagles nest nor
Captain Tom’s yardstick prize was won. The good field
included visitors from Quarry Hill, plus local Daryl Squires
enjoying his first hit.
April 29: The ladies played a stroke round with another
pleasing turn-up. Annette Brereton was in excellent form
with her score of 82-14-68 to win the Pentreaths Supermarket Player of the Day voucher, plus A Grade honours,
ahead of Sherryl Jones (nett 73). Yvonne Stansfield won
B Grade with 122-43-79, while Anne Lowrie won the
9-hole event. Nearest the pins: A Grade – Annette
Brereton; B Grade – Lois Chugg.

May 3: We had a fantastic day at Bamawm Golf Club on
Sunday with our annual Pauline Ward and Kevin McAsey
Day. It was great to see lots of visitors and past members
join us for presentations and afternoon tea. It was
especially great to see Pauline and Kevin and their
families. The ladies played a stroke round and there
were lots of great scores for the day. The winner of the

Milligan with an excellent score of 79-14-65 (first time
under 80 off the stick, top effort), on a countback from the
resurgent Kevin Humbert (78-13-65). In B Grade, Darren
Carnie (88-21-67) was the distant runner-up, on a countback from Travis Mancer (85-18-67). Tom Scurrah (9427-67) won C Grade on a countback from the unlucky
Jayden Wright (100-33-67), who incurred a penalty when
his ball ricocheted onto his bag. Yardstick balls for the
next best scores (across all grades) – Terry Thomas (66),
Travis Mancer, Andrew Harris, Grant Humbert (all 67),
James Hodgens (68). Best scratch scores: A Grade –
Grant Humbert (70); B Grade – Barry Graham (82); C
Grade – Neil Maddison (93 – a good comeback after his
first shot for the day landed in a tree – and stayed there).
Gartside Cup qualifiers – Barry Graham, Gary Milligan,
Kevin Humbert; standby – Terry Thomas. Nearest the
pins: 7th – Andrew Harris; 2nd shot 12th – Gary Milligan; 2nd
shot 18th for the 6-pack smack – Brett Stone (3rd time for
the season so far). The Echuca CIH eagles nest on the
3rd wasn’t won, and neither was Captain Tom’s yardstick
on the 16th. Rick Connors score of 94-21-73 deserves a
mention, given that he went out of bounds 6 times during
his round – once on the 4th, 4 times on the 6th (in successive shots off the fairway but ended up with an 11) and
once on the 8th. This round was also the qualifying round
for the Handicap Matchplay Championships. A nett score
of 70 was required to make the cut for the first round
matches, to be played by Sunday 5th July. First round
draw: Barry Graham v Neil Maddison; Gary Milligan v
Steve Holt; Kevin Humbert v Phil Stanford; Terry Thomas
v Jeff Carnie; Ian Scurrah v Des Pentreath; Jayden
Wright v James Hodgens; Darren Carnie v Andrew Harris; Grant Humbert v Travis Mancer. Upcoming events:
