e-newsletter No. 93 engage! L ast week I was alerted to the fact that an email had been received by some of our members (mainly Lodge Secretaries) from [email protected]. One might naturally assume that this email address originated from Grand Lodge. Our investigations have confirmed it is NOT a Grand Lodge email address and should be ignored. Don’t be mistaken, don’t be misled, the recent “communication” via that fake email address was sent anonymously from a source that wanted it to look as if it came from Grand Lodge. The email address does not exist. This type of action does not represent the standard of behaviour expected of Freemasons or decent people generally, it goes well beyond just being mischievous. The email had an attachment that contained a paper authored by WBro. Jim King titled “The threat from within”, the remainder of the content is anonymous. While I don’t entirely agree with Jim’s document, he and I are in discussion about its contents. I repeat, this email and the (predominently anonymous) attachment did not come from anyone at Grand Lodge. I for one, am getting tired of having to comment on the behaviour shown by the faceless and gutless men creating this disharmony – it doesn’t belong in our organisation. Some Brethren have requested Grand Lodge put a stop to it. Could I suggest that the Brethren of Freemasons Victoria are the only ones that can put a stop to it? If people deliberately conceal their identity or even worse, misrepresent who they are and prefer the cowardly cloak of anonymity, there’s not much I can do even though I will not stop trying. Moving on to much happier and more Masonic matters, on Saturday 28 March, Seavic Lodge No. 8 held its regular Installation conducted by members of the 2014 Grand Lodge Team. There was however on this occasion one big difference, the Installation was conducted in the magnificent Read Masonic Centre in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. A delegation from Victoria, in excess of 100 Brethren and their families, travelled to KL for this Installation which was conducted in a Lodge room that had a capacity crowd of approximately 250 Freemasons. There were representatives from the Grand Lodges of England, Ireland and Scotland and the audience was one of the most diverse I had seen in a Masonic environment. They were all there to witness first-hand the legendary ceremonial excellence of Victorian Grand Teams. Based on the feedback over the weekend, the attendees were not disappointed. The Team performed our ritual and ceremonial to the standard we have all grown accustomed to for some time, the spectators were just in awe. On the other hand, I’m sure all the Victorians in attendance were suitably impressed with the brotherhood, hospitality, courtesy, hand of friendship and respect extended to all of us by the Malaysian Brethren. For me it once again highlighted the breadth and strength of our fraternity. I trust all Brethren and their families who celebrated Easter, Passover, Greek Easter or just a long weekend enjoyed the time with their families. STOP PRESS Congratulations to the Task Force and all of the volunteers who collected $102,000 on Good Friday for the Royal Children’s Hospital – a truly magnificent result. MWBro. Hillel Benedykt Grand Master Proud sponsors of Freemasons Victoria in its 125th year. 2015 Grand Banquet F reemasons Victoria’s Grand Banquet was held on Saturday 21 March at the Plaza Ballroom on Collins Street, to celebrate the Installation of Grand Master MWBro. Hillel Benedykt, and the welcoming of the newly invested 2015 Grand Lodge Ceremonial Team. Hillel has just commenced his second term and is the 44th Grand Master for the United Grand Lodge of Victoria and only the second of Jewish faith, after Henry Nathan (1982-1984). News The Grand Banquet, known to be one of the fraternity’s most glamorous evenings, saw around four hundred guests attend, all dressed to impress. The Plaza Ballroom was the perfect venue for the occasion with its regal air and unique history. Elaborately dressed tables and two ‘Juliette’ balconies as well as a dance floor big enough for the Hora, made for a very enjoyable evening of fun and entertainment. Guests enjoy the 2015 Grand Banquet at the Plaza Ballroom, Collins Street, Melbourne. The celebrations started as the 2014 and 2015 Teams joined the Grand Master and his wife Sue, the Deputy Grand Master RWBro. Don Reynolds and partner Mya on the dance floor in a celebratory dance. Past Grand Master, MWBro. Garry Sebo, in proposing the toast to the Grand Master, reflected on the strength of character required to be a good leader. Also that a leader, when faced with difficult decisions that will ultimately affect the entire fraternity, requires an enormous amount of courage and integrity. He affirmed that Bro. Hillel had demonstrated all of this in his first term and would no doubt continue in his second. MWBro. Sebo gave praise to the continuous and strong support that Sue, Hillel’s wife, had given to Hillel in his many years in Freemasonry and especially in his role as Grand Master. Guests kick up their heels on the Plaza Ballroom dance floor! Thanks were given to sponsors and partners, most of whom were present, for their substantial and ongoing support. Sponsors include CREO Media, MIRVAC, KPMG, McKean Park Lawyers, Wiseman Institute, Immanuel Shmuel and Royce Consultants. The evening was enhanced by the fantastic meal served by the very capable Plaza Ballroom team. Another highlight of the evening was the announcement by Grand Secretary RWBro. Peter Henshall of the initial inductees into the Freemasons Victoria’s Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame recognises those who have made a significant contribution, over and above that of many others, to community as well as Freemasonry. The recipients have helped shape Victoria in some way in areas of town planning, philanthropy and community development. The recipients were MWBro. Sir William John Clarke (1831-1897), Sir Herbert Olney (1875-1957), William Charles Vahland (1828-1915), Sir John Quick (1852-1932) and RWBro. Ivan (Bill) Warner. MWBro. Sir William John Clarke, the first Hall of Fame recipient for 2015. Warner, the only recipient able to accept his award personally, was given a standing ovation. His incredibly selfless efforts in areas of community well-being and benevolence, has now gone down in Freemasons Victoria history. He was given a certificate signed by the Grand Master and a newly designed Hall of Fame jewel which he can now wear proudly. RWBro. Ivan (Bill) Warner, Hall of Fame jewel recipient for 2015. Hillel Benedykt. Members and their families were invited to Powlett Reserve in East Melbourne to enjoy a friendly barbecue with the Grand Master and his family. News Exceptional weather made it a day to remember. The Freemasons Victoria Task Force, led by Merv Dyer provided a great spread of salads and kept three barbecues on the go during the event ensuring all guests were well satisfied. WBro. Lionel May cooking up a storm at the Grand Installation Family Day. Many thanks must also go to David Wells, Peter Julier and Lionel May. A bouncy castle kept the little ones, and some big ones amused. A face painter made sure that many left adorned with dragons, butterflies and fairies, not to mention the Square and Compasses, seen on the cheeks of the Grand Master and Grand Secretary! Melbourne Youth Music provided a talented jazz trio to entertain those present. Grand Master MWBro. Hillel Benedykt took the opportunity to again personally thank all who attended, and those who had been involved in both the coordination of Family Day as well as the entire series of events that has made his Installation one to remember. Special thanks must go to the Melbourne City Council for the use of Powlett Reserve, East Melbourne. WBro. Graham Berry takes the opportunity to have his face painted! The Homes Open Day T he facilities at The Homes were on show at the 2015 Homes Open Day on Saturday 28 March. Freemasons Victoria was there to support The Homes with a promotional display, and MWBro. Garry Sebo PGM assisting in the presentation of awards. RWBro. Don Reynolds and his partner Mya, RWBro. Myles King and his wife Isabella attended the presentations, standing in for Grand Master MWBro. Hillel Benedykt who was overseas and unable to attend. News MC for the event, WBro. Michael Maher welcomed guests, and introduced The Homes Board Chairman Ian Buckingham who gave the opening address and spoke about the provision of the utmost in accommodation and care at The Homes. This was followed by a very interesting presentation from Dr Tanya Petrovich of Alzheimer’s Australia who introduced guests to ‘Charlie’, the home-care robot. Charlie assists in the care of those living with Alzheimer’s when a carer is unavailable. He talks, plays music and responds to the client enabling interactivity and a sense of not being alone. Dr Petrovich’s presentation, ‘Technology facilitating change in dementia care’ provided guests with an insight into what it might be like for a dementia sufferer and how a ‘virtual’ platform where clients can interact within a virtual home is proving to be incredibly beneficial. WBro. Alistair Fisher collects the Lodge Award on behalf of Melbourne St. Claire Reunion Lodge No. 17. Shortly afterwards, the Lorna Chapman Award, which recognises commitment and care from a Homes staff member, was presented to Jan Wintle who has been working at The Homes for nearly ten years. RWBro. Aleck Miller, who has been working tirelessly for the last 25 years coordinating the Annual Masonic Bowls Day was awarded a Certificate of Appreciation. RWBro. Aleck and his team of volunteers are responsible for donating thousands of dollars towards The Homes each year. WBro. John Berhang, who has recently taken over the role of coordinator for the Annual Masonic Bowls Day, presented a cheque to Ian Buckingham for $2000 - proceeds from this years’ bowls event. Dr Tanya Petrovich of Alzheimer’s Australia. Guests were invited to enjoy a barbecue lunch in The Homes gardens where entertainment was provided by a balloon clown, a spanish music ensemble, and dancing dogs. With tours of the facility being provided and a number of exhibits from Scouts Victoria, the Ladies Auxiliary, Golden Days Radio and Springtime Sydenham Residential Care, there was plenty of information on offer. The Homes Open Day is a wonderful opportunity to enquire about aged care and to experience a total perspective on what The Homes can offer. RWBro. Bill Mundy, a Mark Master Mason for over 40 years, was presented with a Certificate of Appreciation to mark his many years of service to the Geelong United Mark Lodge. The certificate was presented by RWBro. Ed Dingey on behalf of the Lodge. Bro. Bill rarely missed a meeting or even a rehearsal and was always on hand to assist in setting up and clearing away. For years he accompanied the then Welfare Officer on his visits to the sick and widows of deceased members and in 2002 inherited the office, which he filled with distinction. News He didn’t sit around waiting for someone to ring him but called on any one who had missed a couple of meetings. Even though illness forced him to relinquish the office in 2012 he still kept the Lodge informed of the health of all of the members and even left his hospital bed to visit another not-quite-so ill brother. He always provided full, informative reports at meetings and modestly and unassumingly did much for the “social health” of the Lodge. Victorian Freemasons Cycling Club News O rganisers of the Lake Hume Challenge reported the day as being a huge success. There were over 600 participants breaking the previous record by almost 40 per cent and the day raised $25,000 for the AlburyWodonga Regional Cancer Centre. It was pleasing to note that the Victorian Freemasons Cycling Club got a special mention in dispatches in reference to their fundraising effort. In turn, the Club thanks the District Coordinator and the Lodges in District 108 for their generous support. The Cycling Teams’ next appearance will be in the 50km 2015 MS Melbourne Cycle on 19 April. Most Lodge Secretary’s have received an email from team fundraising coordinator WBro. Donation to Swan Hill District Health T hanks to a generous donation by the Freemasons Victoria Foundation and Swan Hill Lodge No. 919, Swan Hill District Health now has a Lymphoedema treatment room, new equipment and trained staff to assist with detection and management of Lymphoedema. Lymphoedema is the accumulation of excessive amounts of protein rich fluid resulting in swelling of one or more regions of the body. News Through the combined efforts of both the Women Touched by Cancer Group and Freemasons Victoria, Swan Hill District Health received a donation totaling $30,280. Patients with Lymphoedema can now be treated locally, in a timely manner, with dignity and privacy. RWBro. Nhill Boardwalk Project Nearing Completion Nhill Swamp Boardwalk Committee P rogress with reconstruction and refurbishment of the Nhill Swamp Boardwalk has been consistent and impressive since the commencement of the working part of the project in the New Year. Contract supervision assisted by many hundreds of hours of voluntary work has led to such efficiency that the new and upgraded Boardwalk will once again link the Highway Park entrance with the downtown Nhill Lake, by the first week in April 2015. News This will enable the main part of the Boardwalk to be re-opened to the public once approval has been given by the supervising engineer, in the second week in April. This will then leave just the branch to the Bird Observatory hub to be subsequently completed. Entrance to the Nhill Swamp Boardwalk. Leading participation by members of Lowan Lodge No. 107 and the Victorian Freemasons Task Force along with the Rotary Club of Nhill has been wonderfully supported by the local Karen community, the West Wimmera Health Service, Parks Victoria and the community at large. The Nhill Boardwalk committee is pleased to report that the substantial inputs required for the project are coming in within budget. This would not have been possible without the outstanding contributions from Freemasons Victoria and the Victorian Government. The Boardwalk Committee is now planning for a grand opening ceremony to be held in the latter half of May 2015. Next time you are travelling to, or through, Nhill be sure to visit the Boardwalk and enjoy the enduring legacy of Victorian Freemasonry’s presence in Western Victoria. Victorian Red Cross of Constantine Visits Tasmania A little bit of history was created at the Tasmanian Trinity Conclave Installation in Ulverstone Tasmania, where Most Puissant Sovereign Bill Paterson was enthroned on 23 March 2015. News Distinguished visitors included the Grand Sovereign of the Grand Imperial Conclave of Victoria, Most Illustrious Knight Richard Elkington, and his Grand Viceroy and Right Illustrious Knight David Yole. Also present was the outgoing Intendent General of the Grand Imperial Conclave of Scotland, Very Illustrious Knight Ron Wisby, and his successor Illustrious Knight Rob Lovett, along with the Enthronement and Installing Officer, Very Illustrious Knight Ian Blair. The Hobart Masonic Centre. It appeared that this was the first occasion that the Tasmanian Trinity Conclave had hosted a Most Illustrious, a Right Illustrious and several Very Illustrious Knights at the same time. It is also a first that both Victorian and Scottish constitution leaders were present at an Enthronement in Ulverstone where Tasmanian Trinity meet. It was especially pleasing for Very Illustrious Knight Ian Blair who had worked hard for a number of years to arrange this interstate visit. Moreover, in thanking the visitors in the Conclave for their attendance from Victoria, the Most Puissant Sovereign informed them that he had been initiated in the Brighton Conclave No. 3 in Melbourne and received his St John the Evangelist in Emmanuel No. 5 in Preston. He echoed Very Illustrious Knight Ian Blair’s sentiments in saying how pleased that such an auspicious occasion had been enhanced by their visitation. After the Conclave was closed, there was light hearted discussion on the difference and subtleties in both jurisdictions. All agreed that it was an enthronement with a difference. Alan Mitchell, The Army Lodge No. 478 T News he idea of the ANZAC Reunion Meeting was conceived by WBro. Lieutenant Colonel B.R. (Barry) Tinkler, MBE, during his term as Worshipful Master of The Army Lodge No. 478 in 1982. The first meeting was a special daylight meeting to enable those who were unable to attend the normal evening meetings, to join with the Brethren of the Lodge in an ANZAC commemoration ceremony and reunion luncheon. The meeting was an outstanding success. Brethren from both the Victorian Naval & Military Lodge No. 49 and the United Service Lodge No. 330, together with the Army Lodge members, attended in large numbers. Shortly after the meeting, representatives from the three Lodges met and agreed to hold the meeting annually, hosting it in rotation. The format of the meeting was to remain the same, i.e. a short commemoration ceremony in the lodge room followed by a reunion luncheon. The only variations agreed were that each host Lodge would carry out its own particular ceremony of commemoration, and that ex-Service and other interested Brethren would be welcome to attend. It was also agreed that the Most Worshipful Grand Master (or his nominated representative) would be invited to attend. At that time there were a number of Freemasons in the Royal New Zealand Returned and Services’ Association (NZRSA) who were also invited to attend and make it a real ANZAC event. In 2011 Vietnam Veterans Memorial Lodge No. 921 was invited to join the combined Lodges and host the 2011 event. A later modification was that the Army Lodge Catering Officer handled the catering arrangements. KMLR2 on tour again in May The Kilwinning Mark Lodge of Research No. 2 (UGLMMMV) will meet at the Belmont MC as part of its program to take research into the Mark Degree into regional Victoria, on 29 May 2015. The KMLR2 is chartered to hold two of its four meetings each year at Victorian country locations with the other two being held at its home base of Mt Waverley MC. Since its reconsecration in late 2013, KMLR2 has met at Bendigo and Wonthaggi. Meetings are held with the assistance of the local Mark Lodge and all Mark Master Masons are invited to attend. Lodge will tyle at 5:30pm, and after the opening one or two lectures on a topic related to Mark Masonry will be presented and discussed. Lodge will close at 7:30pm so that members and guests can enjoy the entertainment and dinner. Dress: Jacket and tie Information booklet: contact the chairman of the membership committee WBro. Les Cooper on 039887 9293 or email crusader711@ optusnet.com.au The combined meeting was held in 1983, hosted by The Army Lodge; and with one exception, has been held every year since, with attendance averaging 100 Brethren. This year marks the 100th Anniversary of the Gallipoli Landings and to mark the occasion, the meeting’s organising committee intend to make the Combined Lodges’ ANZAC Reunion Meeting a very special event on the Victorian masonic calendar. The 2015 meeting will be held at the Ivalda Masonic Centre on Saturday 18 April, 2015, with a short Lodge meeting and commemoration ceremony commencing at 11am, followed by a reunion luncheon at 12.30pm. The day’s proceedings are scheduled to conclude at 3pm. It is a Freemasons only event, with attendance to the luncheon limited to 120. Entry is by prepaid ticket. Re-Dedication of Sir William Clarke Memorial I n glorious sunshine the Memorial Statue of Sir William Clarke, PGZ was re-dedicated by the First Grand Principal, MEmComp Graeme O’Donnell, GZ on Tuesday 31 March 2015. About 100 Royal Arch, Craft and Mark Masons together with friends and family, and not a few passers-by, witnessed the unique ceremony. After a short and very pleasant public procession led by Pipers through Melbourne’s Treasury Gardens in full regalia, the gathering assembled around the Sir William Clarke Memorial at the corner of Spring Street and Treasury Place to perform the ceremony. News REmComp Peter Crick, DGZ, MWBro. Hillel Benedykt, GM (UGLV) and RWBro. Ian Coad, DGM (Mark) ‘proved’ the structure to be sound using the Square, Level and Plumb Rule. This was followed by the presentation by the GH, GJ, GSE and GSN to the First Grand Principal of the golden Consecration Vessels containing corn, wine, oil and salt. Members of the Royal Arch, Craft and Mark Freemasons march to the Sir William Clarke Memorial in Treasury Gardens. The “Elements of Consecration” were dispensed in the usual manner with various forms of invocation for each Element written especially for the occasion. The ceremony ended with an Address by the First Grand Principal. The basis of the ceremony was taken from several sources dating as far back as 1816. A sprig of Evergreen was placed on the Memorial by the First Grand Principal “May the memory of Sir William Clarke, Past First Grand Principal be as evergreen as the Fir Tree.” The Ceremony was attended by Hon. Bruce Atkinson, President of the Legislative Council in the Parliament of Victoria, and Hon. Colin Brooks, MLA, Member for Bundoora representing the Premier. It was most unfortunate that Rupert Clarke, great grandson of Sir William, was ill and unable to be present. Members and guests await to be seated as the Sir William Clarke Memorial Service begins. This event was the culmination of the 125th Celebrations of the Supreme Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons of Victoria – Sir William Clarke being the inaugural First Grand Principal in 1889. That evening, as an act of humility, the First Grand Principal accompanied by his Deputy, the Second and Third Grand Principals and the Grand Scribe Ezra, attended the Salvation Army Temple in Bourke Street, to assist with the food service to the homeless and indigent of the City of Melbourne. Royal Freemasons seeks your support to buy Therapeutic Robot Seals for our dementia aged care customers. These are some the first therapeutic robotic seals to arrive in Australia. They will allow the documented benefits of animal therapy to be experienced by Royal Freemasons residents across Victoria. The purchased baby seals will be part of a research study to understand how they can improve quality of life for residents and caregivers. The robotic pet has five kinds of sensors: tactile, light, audition, temperature, and posture sensors, with which it can perceive people and its environment. By interaction with people, it responds as if it is alive, moving its head and legs, making sounds, and showing the user’s preferred behaviour. The robot provides the benefits of animal therapy to people in facilities. Some of the benefits are: • Reduce customer stress and their caregivers • Stimulates interaction between customers and caregivers • Psychological effect on customers, improving their relaxation and motivation • Improves the socialisation of customers with each other and with caregivers The financial support required to purchase the therapeutic robots is just one of the initiatives Royal Freemasons has committed to in its continuing efforts to help its aged care customers.
