Local Vauxhall retailer, Evans Halshaw in Newport,
is gearing up for an exciting season of football after
welcoming Wales Manager, Chris Coleman, to their
dealership for the Wales squad announcement.
The former international player visited the retailer
on Spytty Road yesterday to announce the team line-up
ahead of the Euro qualifying match against Israel, which
takes place on Saturday 28th March.
The team at Evans Halshaw Newport were only
too happy to welcome back the football legend,
who visited the dealership last year
on a similar occasion.
As well as
announcing the
line-up for the
match, Chris
caught up with
staff and discussed
the season’s
upcoming games.
He commented: “I’d
2
like to thank Evans Halshaw Newport for being
so welcoming, yet again, and providing a great
venue to announce the line-up.”
He chatted about the newest additions
to the Vauxhall line-up, including the New
Corsa, upcoming VIVA and city-chic ADAM
GRAND SLAM, as well as posing for photos,
including one with the dealership’s latest
award; the prestigious Vauxhall
Customer Excellence Award which
they won earlier this year.
As an extra reward, the
Wales Football Association
presented the retailer with
free tickets enabling team
members to enjoy the next
home game.

TEST TUBES EXPERIMENT FOR
VAUXHALL AHEAD OF THE EUROS
No pass, no Euros, says RED
driving instructor Jean-Pierre
Soccer AM’s popular presenter
Tubes has been challenged to pass
his driving test before Euro 2016
in France by Vauxhall, the lead
sponsors of Home Nations Football.
The 33-year-old is featuring in a
monthly YouTube series called Test
Tubes, tracking his driving progress
throughout the year as he bids to
pass his test in time to follow the
home nations that qualify for the
European Championship in France.
Tubes won’t be facing the
challenge alone and will be given
guidance by footballing talent along
the way, including Northern Ireland
legend Kevin Horlock.
Tubes said: “This is an exciting
challenge and I am grateful
to Vauxhall for giving me the
opportunity. At 33 I really should
be able to drive, I had a few lessons
when I was a teenager but didn’t
carry it on.
“The dream would be to pass my
test so that I can follow England in
France next summer. They say that
it gets harder to learn when you get
older but I am going out to prove
that idea wrong.
“Hopefully I don’t make any big
errors as everyone will see, but I
know I am in safe hands and as my
French driving instructor JeanPierre says it’s no pass, no Euros,
so the incentive is huge!” he added.
Tubes will be learning in the
brand new Vauxhall Corsa and will
be undertaking lessons with RED
Driving School.
Cheryl Stibbs, Sponsorship
Marketing Manager, said: “We’re
delighted to be able to provide Tubes
with a car so that he can potentially
follow his and our passion of football
next summer in France.”

Burnley’s Sam Vokes returns to
the squad after long-term injury
Wales boss Chris Coleman has recalled
striker Sam Vokes to his squad to face Israel
on 28 March.
Burnley’s Vokes, 25, suffered cruciate
ligament damage and was out for nine
months before returning in the Premier
League on Boxing Day.
However, Coleman says Vokes won’t play
the full game against unbeaten Group B
leaders Israel.
“Sam’s probably not ready to start and do a
full 90 minutes. I don’t think so,” he said. “It’s
going to take time because after an injury like
that it doesn’t just happen overnight.
“He needs to trust himself and trust his
injury. [But] It’s great to have him back. It’s
a big positive for us because he’s been out a
long time.”
Fellow striker Simon Church is also
included after overcoming a shoulder injury,
but Wales will be without defender James
Chester.
Coleman is also without Newcastle
full-back Paul Dummett (knee), Fulham
midfielder George Williams (knee) and Wigan
midfielder Emyr Huws (ankle).
Wales are a point behind Israel with two
wins and two draws from their four games.
Simon Church has recovered

HISTORY: WALES V ISRAEL
Wales are set to face
Israel for the first
time since 1989
This is a relatively new fixture; the first of seven
meetings between two UEFA members came as
recently as 1984 in Pori on the west coast of Finland.
The last time Wales met Israel competitively it resulted
in them qualifying for the World Cup finals for the first
and only time.
On that occasion, Israel had won their section by
default as no African or Asian country would play them
following the 1956 Suez crisis.
With FIFA unwilling to allow a team into the World
Cup finals without playing a match, Jimmy Murphy’s
Wales, who had finished behind Czechoslovakia in their
qualification group, went into the ‘lucky losers’ draw
with eight other European runners-up to play off against
Israel.
First to be drawn were Belgium but they declined
to play. Wales were next out and they accepted the
challenge.
Wales played in Tel Aviv in January 1958 and won 2-0
with goals from Ivor Allchurch and Dave Bowen.
Murphy was pose with a problem for the second leg
as he also had duties as assistant to Sir Matt Busby at
Manchester United.
On 5 February 1958 - the same day as Wales were
playing Israel in Cardiff - United had an away game with
Red Star Belgrade in the European Cup.
Murphy’s dilemma was solved by Busby, who
persuaded his assistant to stay with his country. As
United were drawing 3-3 in Belgrade, Wales eased to
their first World Cup finals with another 2-0 win over
Israel with another goal from Allchurch, with Cliff Jones
also on the score-sheet.
At the finals Wales finished as runners-up to hosts
Sweden in group three to reach the quarter-finals. That
set them up with a tie against Brazil – but a young Pele
scored the only goal for the South Americans who went
on to win the Jules Rimet trophy.
Wales’ only previous clashes with Israel were
friendlies, the first on 8 February 1984 in Tel Aviv. That
ended goalless but, five years later in another Tel Aviv
game, there were six goals in a 3-3 draw.
Israel were two goals ahead within seven minutes
before Barry Horne replied for the visitors. An own goal
let wales draw level and, after Eli Dryks scored Israel’s
third, Malcolm Allen score an 87th minute equaliser.

STATISTICS:
WALES
Neville Southall remains the Wales all-time caps
record holder, while former manager Gary Speed and
recently retired striker Craig Bellamy are second and
third respectively.
The record is unlikely to be challenged any time soon;
the highest-capped current international is Chris Gunter,
who is 21st highest cap holder with 57 appearances, two
ahead of 22nd placed Joe Ledley.
Gareth Bale’s double in Andorra last September took
the Real Madrid star into the top 10 of the nation’s
greatest ever scorers, level with John Hartson.
Two more goals would take him level with Cliff Jones,
Robert Earnshaw and Mark Hughes and as Bale is still
only 25, he is on course to challenge Ian Rush’s 28-goal
all-time record

THE MANAGERS
His next club was Coventry City in 2008 where he
stayed for two years. Last year he had a short spell with
Larissa in Greece, but this ended in January 2012 when
he left the club before becoming Wales’ manager.
He finished the World Cup qualifiers with a win,
against Macedonia, and a draw in Brussels against
Belgium.
And the good work has continued in the European
Championship qualifiers, with two wins and two draws,
leaving Wales in second place in Group B.
WALES: CHRIS COLEMAN
Chris Coleman, now 44, is the 12th permanent
manager of Wales, and the longest serving in
terms of games (21) since John Toshack.
The Swansea-born former central defender won
schoolboy caps for Wales and was signed by Manchester
City, though his stay was short.
Swansea City then signed him as a 17 year-old and
he was to make almost 200 appearances for the club,
helping them to win the Welsh Cup twice.
He moved to Crystal Palace in 1991 for £250,000 and
during his time at Selhurst Park, he won the first of his
32 senior Caps for Wales after six under-18 and three
under-21 Caps.
After more than 150 first team appearances, Chris
moved to Blackburn Rovers, the then Premier League
Champions, for £2.8 million, in 1995. In 1997 he joined
Fulham for £2 million and he was soon made club
Captain.
His career was rejuvenated at Craven Cottage, but
sadly a car crash in 2001 put paid to his playing days
as he was unable to fully recover from the leg injuries
received.
He made a final emotional appearance for Wales,
coming on as a last minute substitute against Germany
in a friendly in 2002.
He was given the chance to join the coaching staff
at Fulham and acted as caretaker manager in 2003
before being given the job permanently - making him the
youngest ever Premier League Manager.
After a promising first season when the team finished
ninth, the second was harder and Chris left in 2007. He
then had a short spell in Spain at Real Sociedad before
resigning in 2008.

ISRAEL: ELI GUTMAN
Gutman, now 57, had a relatively a low-key
career as a midfielder before retiring aged
just 28. He began his coaching career with Israeli club
Maccabi Kiryat Bialik and also completed a sports
science degree.
He later became a teacher, while coaching in local
football after national service as a naval officer.
In 1990 Gutman began a two-year spell as assistant
coach with Maccabi Haifa and later won his first major
honour when he led Hapoel Be’er Sheva to success in the
Israeli State Cup, in 1997.
Later that year Gutman returned to Hapoel Haifa, his
boyhood club, and within two years had won the Israeli
league title.
He went on to manage Beitar Jerusalem and Hapoel
Petach-Tikva before moving to Cyprus to lead Paralimni
and EAL. But he went back to Hapoel Tel-Aviv, taking
them to the State Cup final and, in the 2009-10 season,
he secured a league and cup double.
In December 2011 Gutman was appointed Israel
coach, succeeding Luis Fernandez.
