by Ryan Rivera
The Marfa Shorthorns played at home
April 17 against Anthony and won 14
-2. They continued their victory path
as they took on Van Horn and won 108. Three days later, Van Horn came to
Marfa and was defeated 12-2. The finale
of the season was on April 20 when the
LadyHorns won against McCamey to
become 2015 District Champs.

On March 25, the RoboHorns competed at the Hub City Robotics Regionals in
Lubbock. The four-day competition was the team’s first ever in their “rookie
season” and rookies or not, everybody’s impressed. In Lubbock, they competed
in the Recycled Rush, to stack totes and build their points topping it off with a
trash can. Although they finished twenty-sixth, they were chosen as the ‘wild-card
team’ to attend the FIRST World Championship in April. “They did better than
anybody dreamed they could,” said Rob Crowley, a mentor to the team. He did
mean this in the most innocent of ways saying that he just meant they were set on
winning the Rookie All Star Award since it was their first year at the competition.
Some of the team members added how it was for them when they competed at
the regionals. “It was crazy. It was amazing,” said Chris Ibarra. “It was probably
one of the greatest experiences I think I’m ever going to have.”
“I think out of all the experiences from football and basketball play-offs and
stuff, I would say FIRST Robotics was a greater experience and more fulfilling
than basketball and football,” said Gavin Livingston.
On April 21, the RoboHorns will be traveling to St. Louis, Missouri to compete
at the World Championship through April 25. 600 teams from around the
world will be competing in front of about 40,000 spectators. Team captain, Eva
Guevara, says she is looking forward to “seeing all the other teams and what they
have created, as well as being able to “interact” with other teams. She then went
on to state that the basic design for Babbage would be staying intact, but they
will be adjusting a few principles to make it easier to stack the totes, as well as
changing some of the code in Babbage. Michaela Serrano says she is excited for
this experience since she did not attend the competition in Lubbock and is looking
forward to a few courses that the competition offers to the students, such as 3D
printing course and how the technology applies to the “real world.” Serrrano also
added that she can’t wait to “dip our toes into some new experiences.”
Congratulations RoboHorns on all that you have accomplished and good luck
with the championship to come.
PROM UPDATE!
by Amber Olvera
With prom only a few weeks away, the junior class is working hard to make sure
everything goes as planned. Prom will be located in the MSG, and the theme is
Casino Night. The colors will consist of red and black, along with a few other
casino-ish colors! Orders have not yet been placed, but the juniors have just about
everything they need in order to make prom a successful night. They will also be
making props of their own. Some members of the class are trying and very eager
to get a photo booth to come to Marfa.
“I’m really excited for prom and I can’t wait to see how it will be this year!”
Lisette Delfin said. “I hope that everyone is able to show up to prom and I hope
that prom gear planning is ready as well!” Here’s a quick reminder: Don’t forget
that if you are bringing a visitor from out of town, they must fill out paperwork in
order to enter for prom night.

On April 17 the Shorthorns traveled to
Wink Tx, for District/Area track meet.
The Boys Track team placed second in
relays. Aaliyah Sanchez beat her own
3200m record by .02 of a second. Later
that day the Shorthorns were named
District Champs! Raven Hollens broke
a 22 year old, school track record on
good Friday at a meet in Kermit TX.
The 100 dash record time was 12.84
seconds and Raven broke it in 12.7
seconds. She says that it was “kinda
exciting and kinda cool” breaking the
record and wants to try to break her
now personal record later this season.

Dear Flabio...
by Flabio
Dear Flabio, what should i do if my
boyfriend did not call me last night?
You should have called him! :/ —F
Dear Flabio, my boyfriend is about to
graduate and i don’t know if should
stay with him or not.
Talk to him and tell him how you feel,
be honest. Honesty is the best policy.

Dear Flabia, why can’t seniors have
hour lunches till the end of the year? It
is so convenient.
First of all, my name is FLABIO, not
Flabia. My advice to you is sweet talk
the Principal, tell her the facts of why
it is convenient for the seniors. If this
does not work, start a small peaceful
petition. PEACEFUL!
—F
Dear Flabio, Who are you?
I am Flabio the GREAT. And don’t
forget.

Marfa High School Band Plays El Paso
by Juan Fabela
On April 16, the Marfa ISD Band was invited to play at Southwest University Park
for the El Paso Chihuahua v. Reno Aces baseball game. The game was also in honor
of Selena, the deceased Mexican pop star. The Marfa ISD Band played the National
Anthem from the field before the start of the game and after playing, they took their
seats in the stands to support the Chihuahuas. Joel Hernandez said, “I was nervous,
but glad that we go to play the National Anthem at such a great venue.”
There were also a lot of people from Marfa who traveled to the game to support
the Chihuahua’s. By the time El Paso won 10 - 3, the Band was on the bus and on
their way back to Marfa.
Colorful Words
by Adrianna Pineda
Marfa high school decided to work with Chinati on a little project involving all
of 9th and 10th grade. The collaboration happened in Mrs. Boyd’s room, also
involving the creative writing teachers, Mrs.Taqui and Coach Ojeda.
Students were asked to write poems and were given inspiration to write.
Students had trouble coming up with it at first, then they got the hang of it and
created something beautiful.
After the long, hard writing process, students were told that they could paint
the background of their poems and really let them ‘’pop’’ out. Many students
enjoyed the painting more than writing their poems.
At the end of the day the Shorthorns had a blast with the collaboration of art
and writing, in order to make something unique and not yet seen.
They will also present their papers on Sunday April 19th at Chinati’s arena.
Former Shorthorn Visits Marfa High One Last Time
by Lisette Delfin
Retired U.S. Marine Gunnery Sergeant Manuel Espudo joined us at Marfa High
School to get his high school diploma. Sergeant Espudo left to fight in the war
before he could finish high school. He had heard that his best friend Tenerio was
killed in the war. Sergeant Espudo always wanted his Marfa High School diploma.
He came to Marfa with his wife, stepdaughter and 2 sons. He told students at Marfa
High School a story about a little boy name Jimmy. It taught Sergeant Espudo
not to give on anything and just to keep going. The Sergeant gave Mr. Peters a
ceremonial sword to hang inside Marfa High. Future Marine, Eduardo Amaro was
invited to the stage to meet Sergeant Espudo. Afterwards, everyone was out of
the auditorium Espudo took a big breath and said, “Boy, this is awesome.” Then
he wiped tears that began to form. This ceremony was touching to remember the
kind words he was telling us. His story is a very inspiring story and awesome. Not
everyone does what he did. He was a very happy person to return to Marfa High
School for his diploma.
Dear Flabio, Is that rlly what Flabio
looks like? Don’t catfish.
First of all, please spell really instead of
being lazy and shortening it. It amuses
Flabio how you can spell catfish, but
not really. Yes that is what Flabio
really looks like and I don’t catfish.
—F
FLABIO TAKES NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR ANY
CONSEQUENCES/ACTIONS THAT MAY RESULT
IN HIS ADVICE. HE LIVES FAR AWAY FROM
HERE AND DOESN’T KNOW RIGHT FROM
WRONG. BUT YOU HAVE A CONSEQUENCE,
YOU KNOW RIGHT FROM WRONG. :D
High School Poem
By Gabriela Garcia
The first bell of the day,
telling me it’s about to start again,
I drag myself to class,
the teacher keeps on talking,
it looks like she is not in the mood today,
next to me the girls are talking about the
dance.
It’s all they talk of through the day.
The guys are always in the day’s sports and
never look away.
Once it’s time for lunch and I began to
leave,
I feel the cold air rushing through my skin.
I’m feeling like I’m alive again,
I see my friend from far away
It looks like she survived.
It’s been a hard day,
She looks at me like,
“Come on, let’s go, the bell has rung”
So I drag myself back to class again,
The teacher keeps on talking,
the girls keep on gossiping,
time keeps on going,
by the end of the day,
I close my eyes and whisper
“It’s almost time”,
Once the last bell rings,
I rush outside, thinking,
It’s only first day,
Plus it’s just high school.
