May / June 2015
Greetings fellow stitchers! I hope you are having a fabulous spring!
Have you ever looked at a piece of finished embroidery and said, “Wow that is
really beautiful…but I would never have stitched it myself!”? I found myself in
that dilemma lately when I saw a beautiful sampler. It wasn’t huge – somewhere
around the size of 10”x12” and it had a rather simple frame that suited it
perfectly. The workmanship on the piece was outstanding. I loved it! But I
would never have done it myself simply because it was a sampler. It seems silly
to not want to stitch something because it is a sampler, but every time I try to
stitch one I feel like I am just getting into the groove of how a newly learned
stitch works I am off to do a different one. It drives me nuts that I don’t feel like
I have really perfected anything by the time I am done with the first 4 or 5
different stitches. So – I simply admire them from afar and know that a finished
one will probably never make it out of my stash!
Plans are coming along for the 25th Anniversary Party to be held at our July
picnic! There will be special decorations and activities to be seen and done – in
addition to all the lovely food we all bring for the pot luck. I am looking forward
to spending some quality time chatting and catching up with everyone after the
Marin County Fair! It is hard to believe that it is already that time again. I want
to encourage everyone to enter something in the fair. The cost is minor, but the
rewards are many! Over the last couple of years it seems like the number of
submissions are decreasing, which means that we don’t get to see as much work,
or gleam ideas from someone else’s work, or find inspiration from other beautiful
pieces. I would love to see everyone in the guild submit at least 1 piece – after
all…I know you have finished up some beautiful work during the last year…so
enter the fair now!
As a last note, I want to encourage you to take time for you…and spend it
stitching. Quite often the world gets busy with so many things that it seems like
you just don’t have time to stop and stitch. My personal philosophy is that if you
make just a bit of time every day to stitch it brings some of that chaotic world into
control and it seems not so hard to get through the day. I personally like to end
my day with a little stitching. It helps me look back on the day, see what went
well (and what didn’t), and plan the next day out in my mind. If it is has been a
particularly stressful day it really helps me unwind and relax. Besides – a little
stitch therapy is better for the waistline than eating the box of chocolate you
really want to sit and devour!
Until next time – happy stitching!

International Teacher Tour
In October, 2015, the Bay Area GPR chapters will be hosting Gary Clarke, a well‐known embroidery teacher from Tasmania, Australia. While we are working out the workshop details, we want to share the information we currently have. We will be offering a two‐day Jacobean white‐work class, on October 6 and 7, a Corded white‐
work class on October 8, and an Embellishment class on October 9. We are looking to work with a few chapters in the Bay Area to host the classes. The expected cost for the two‐day class is about $175 and for each of the one‐day classes is about $130.
