Pastor’s Corner
Dear Mary Star of the Sea Parishioners:
A Blessed Easter Octive and Divine Mercy Sunday. One
of God’s Greatest Attributes is His Mercy. Today we as
the Universal Church celebrate that very Ocean of His
Mercy. Below is some history and facts about the
Message of Divine Mercy. I hope you enjoy it.
Have a Blessed Week and hope to see you at the special
3:00pm Mercy Holy Hour Today.
Fr. Harrigan
Pastor
St. Pope John Paul II
The Great Mercy Pope
Pope John Paul II, both in his teaching and personal life,
strove to live and teach the message of Divine Mercy. As
the great Mercy Pope, he wrote an encyclical on Divine
Mercy: "The Message of Divine Mercy has always been
near and dear to me… which I took with me to the See of
Peter and which it in a sense forms the image of this
Pontificate."
long time when he wrote his encyclical on Divine Mercy.
Further, the Holy Father has frequently quoted from the
Diary of St. Faustina and has prayed The Chaplet of The
Divine Mercy at the saint’s tomb.
Beyond the Life of John Paul II
Given all these connections to Divine Mercy and St.
Faustina, is it any wonder that Pope John Paul II died on
the Vigil of Divine Mercy Sunday (the evening before the
feast day), which fell that year on April 3. It is also no
surprise that the Great Mercy Pope left us a message for
Divine Mercy Sunday, which was read on the feast day by
a Vatican official to the faithful in St. Peter’s after a Mass
that had been celebrated for the repose of the soul of the
Pope.
Repeatedly Pope John Paul II has written and spoken about
the need for us to turn to the mercy of God as the answer to
the specific problems of our times. He has placed a strong
and significant focus on the Divine Mercy message and
devotion throughout his pontificate that will carry the
Church long after his death.
In his writings and homilies, he has described Divine
Mercy as the answer to the world’s problems and the
message of the third millennium. He beatified and
canonized Sr. Maria Faustina Kowalska, the nun associated
with the message, and he did it in Rome and not in Poland
to underscore that Divine Mercy is for the whole world.
Establishing Divine Mercy Sunday for the Entire
Church
When Pope John Paul canonized Sr. Faustina (making her
St. Faustina), he also, on the same day, surprised the entire
world by establishing Divine Mercy Sunday (the feast day
associated with the message) as a feast day for the entire
Church. The feast day falls on the Second Sunday of the
Easter season. On that day, Pope John Paul II declared,
"This is the happiest day of my life."
Entrusting the World to Divine Mercy
In 2002, the Pope entrusted the whole world to Divine
Mercy when he consecrated the International Shrine of The
Divine Mercy in Lagiewniki, a suburb of Krakow in
Poland. This is where St. Faustina’s mortal remains are
entombed. The saint lived in a convent nearby. The Pope
himself remembers as a young man working in the Solvay
Quarry, just a few meters from the present-day Shrine. He
also says that he had been thinking about Sr. Faustina for a

Today’s Readings
First Reading—With great power the apostles bore witness to
the resurrection of the Lord Jesus (Acts 4:32-35).
Psalm—Give thanks to the Lord for he is good, his love is
everlasting (Psalm 118).
Second Reading—The victory that conquers the world is our
faith (1 John 5:1-6).
Gospel—Blessed are those who have not seen and have
believed (John 20:19-31).
TODAY is Divine Mercy Sunday
12:00 Noon: Special Mass in the church
3:00 pm: In the church, there will be exposition of the Blessed
Sacrament, the Chaplet of Divine Mercy in song, the Litany of
Mercy, Benediction, and individual veneration of a first class
relic of St. Faustina. The celebration will conclude with a
reception in the parish center.
Our Lord asked St. Faustina to pray and work towards
establishing a feast of the Divine Mercy on the Sunday after
Easter. He told her: “On this day, the very depths of My tender
mercy are open. I pour out a whole ocean of graces upon souls
who approach the fount of My Mercy. The soul that will go to
confession and receive Holy Communion shall obtain complete
forgiveness of sins and punishment.” (Diary of St. Faustina
699) John Paul II proclaimed Mercy Sunday an official feast of
the church in April of 2000 when he canonized St. Maria
Faustina.
There will be free Divine Mercy Literature in English and
Spanish available on the patio after all the morning masses.
Of One Heart and Mind
Reading about the faith of the early Christian believers can be a
real inspiration to those of us who have been Christians for a
long time, as well as for those who are newly baptized. Can you
imagine people of this world being “of one heart and mind” as
was the first community of believers? Today’s First Letter of
John seems to hold the key to how this can be accomplished.
Keeping God’s commandments and loving all of God’s children
seems to be the start of being “of one heart and mind.” We live
in a world that stresses differences—differences among
religions, among races, between genders, and among economic
classes. Today we are summoned to focus on what we all share
in common on this fragile planet of ours.

Madonna Dell’Arco Feast Day
On Sunday, April 19, 2015 at the
6:30 P.M. Italian Mass, there will be a
celebration of the feast of the
Madonna dell’Arco. The Italian
community has been long devoted to
the Madonna dell’Arco. The name of
the Madonna dell’Arco originates
from an area where there were many
aqueduct with arches (arco) and
columns built during the Roman Empire. On one of these
columns a devoted artist painted the image of the Blessed Virgin
and Child. Many centuries later, youths were playing bocce ball
near the shrine. After a clumsy throw, the ball of one of the
players hit a tree that shaded the sacred shrine. The youth,
blinded by anger, retrieved the ball and threw it against the image
of Our Lady, hitting her the right cheek. To the shock of all those
present, the cheek was seen to bleed, as if it were of real flesh.
The original image is in the Sanctuary in Naples, Italy. Many
miracles were recorded since then and in March 1675 for about a
month, the image of Our Lady was seen surrounded by stars,
while the right cheek appeared red with blood. A picture of the
image of the Madonna dell’Arco was dedicated on January 27,
2013 at Mary Star by the Italian Catholic Federation and was
placed in the Shrine of Saint John Joseph of the Cross. Please join
us to celebrate the Feast Day of Our Lady of the Arch. Bring
flowers from your garden to place them at the image.

God’s Word Today
Easter changes everything. Listen carefully to today’s Gospel
passage, and notice the fact that this account includes Jesus
breathing on his disciples. The same Greek word for breathing
used in this passage also appears at the very beginning of the
Bible. There, in Genesis, the Lord God breathes upon Adam,
giving him life. In the Gospel passage, through this act of
breathing on the disciples, the risen Jesus gives them new life.
What does new life in the resurrected Christ look like? We need
only look at the first reading to discover what a community of
believers acts like when its members are living lives in the risen
Christ. As we prepare to listen to the scriptures, let us pray that
the breath of God will fill us with new life and help us live like
the early Christian communities, when there was no needy person
among them.
