POSITION:
Transportation Director
SUMMARY:
Oversees all aspects of the transportation department while managing bus drivers, mechanic(s), and
staff to provide a safe pupil transportation system for students on a daily basis for Fremont Public
Schools in accordance with Board Policy, the statutes of the Michigan Department of Education and
federal and state laws.
PRIMARY
RESPONSIBILITIES:















Develop, organize, and implement pupil transportation systems within board policies, state and
federal laws for all eligible students throughout a school calendar year.
Recruit, interview and recommend staff for hire to ensure sufficient staffing levels assigned to
execute the pupil transportation system. Oversee, monitor, evaluate, and measure performance
of staff assigned.
Facilitate coaching, instruction, and expectations of corrective action(s) required from staff,
necessary to improve performance in alignment with service expectation.
Approve the safety and efficiency of established bus stops and trips with the ability to efficiently
utilize the computerized software programs and technologies including but not limited to routing
software, GPS and digital computer equipment.
Manage bus repair staff including mechanic(s) with responsibility and accountability for the
inspection of buses in accordance with State and Federal guidelines and general maintenance of
all district vehicles. Ensure safe and efficient operation of schools buses by all staff.
Manage bus driver training for staff to ensure a sufficient training and safety plan is utilized at all
times with accurate driving and personnel records in compliance with state and federal
requirements with coordination of professional development opportunities to improve job
performance of all Transportation Department staff and organization of safety related activities for
students and drivers.
Manage Bus Drivers, Bus Aides, and department staff in daily and substitute assignments.
Review video, audio and/or other electronically monitored activities of staff in performance of
transportation related service.
Work with drivers, school administrators, emergency services, and the general public to facilitate
resolution for problems encountered by drivers on the route(s).
Investigate all accidents and injuries within the Transportation Department jurisdiction in
compliance with local, state, and federal guidelines and board policy.
Prepare and maintain federal, state, and district reporting as required. Prepare parent letters,
bulletins, and other reports as necessary. Written and oral communication skills necessary.
Check roads and make recommendations to the District Administration regarding school closings
related to inclement weather or other hazardous conditions.
Facilitate and maintain relationship with third party vendors including road testing agencies,
medical facilities, fuel providers and other suppliers.
Work effectively with school administrators, secretaries, staff and parents regarding
communications on new student enrollment, and transportation procedures.
Work with staff to schedule bus trips and assign drivers for sporting events, field trip events, and
other trips per policy, execute processes to post trips, and schedule buses and drivers for trips
as requested including maintenance of all necessary records, permits, invoicing and so forth
pertaining to each field trip or activity.

EDUCATION AND/OR
EXPERIENCE:












Address student discipline reports, ensuring they are communicated to the appropriate District
Administrator to determine the type of disciplinary action necessary in alignment with Board
policies and ensuring appropriate follow up with all parties.
Identify issues during school year and work with staff maintaining an up-to-date bus route map
and route information for all bus routes.
Maintain professional development through membership in an industry relevant organization such
as the Michigan Association for Pupil Transportation.
Work effectively with the District staff to prepare and administer a transportation budget.
Ensure security of the Transportation facility.
Develop and maintain filing systems which includes confidential records.
Work with staff to maintain drivers DOT files ensuring compliance items are renewed before
expiration.
Keep appropriate records on file of Emergency Evacuation Drills.
Review and approve transportation employee payroll reports and assist with submission to payroll
department for processing.
Perform other duties as assigned by superintendent.
Extensive knowledge of pupil transportation practices, procedures, rules, regulations and laws.
A proven work history including leadership position(s) within transportation department.
Ability to relate to and work well with parents, students and District employees.
Follow and successfully respond to District rules and regulation.
Maintain respect at all time with confidential information.
Ability to tolerate stressful situations and meet deadlines which may periodically require an
irregular work schedule or extended hours to meet multiple demands from several parties.
Ability to obtain and/or maintain a CDL with P & S endorsements while undergoing preemployment and random drug testing per DOT regulations as well as meeting DOT physical
requirements and maintain an eligible driving record per all applicable employer policies and
state/federal laws.
Meet State and Federal background requirements.
Must be a high school graduate or equivalent (GED) with Associates or Bachelors’ Degree
preferred, with Mandated Transportation Supervisor Training Requirements of Law PA-197.
USEPA and State of Michigan Underground Storage Tank A & B Operator preferred.
State of Michigan Heavy Duty Vehicle Master Mechanic preferred.
Office/Clerical skills (typing, filing, bookkeeping, electronic spreadsheet and general computer
skills).
SALARY RANGE: Commensurate with experience. Administrative benefit package
