The "Dance into May" has found its way into private and commercial events and provides the opportunity to dance and socialize in the night before 1 May. The May tradition in the Rhineland is very special and differs in many parts even from village to village. The groups that organize this tradition usually consist of young males. Often in the May night, a large decorated maypole is centrally situated in the village. The May trees are popular trophies for the neighboring villages by being sawed or stolen. Bachelors "stick" their loved ones a 'Mai', which means, they decorate a tree (usually a birch) or at least a birch branch and attach it to the house or window of the beloved. This tree is decorated with ribbons or roses made of colored crepe or tissue paper. In parts of North Rhine-Westphalia there is an extended habit of maypole setting. A so-called 'Mai' in the form of a selfmade may heart or image is placed on the beloved one's window. Upcoming Events Easter Soccer Cup Our 2015 Easter Celebration and cooking took place on March 30 in the Humboldthaus Aachen. About 30 International Academy students enjoyed an Easter themed afternoon together and engaged in many different Easter activities. The get-together included many traditional German Easter sweets and dishes. After an Easter-abc game as a warm-up to learn about German Easter traditions and the reasons behind celebrating Easter, students had the chance to prepare different dishes to eat them later. We made sweet and savory puff pastries and we even baked an Easter lamb. Other Easter activities included an Easter egg hunt and Easter egg painting. We thank everyone for the nice afternoon! The 2014 RWTH Hallenfußball Cup (soccer cup) took place on Saturday, March 28, at the RWTH Aachen University’s sports centre Königshügel. 20 teams of different faculties, institutes and RWTH associates competed in the all-day event. The International Academy’s soccer team “Intackers United” got admitted to the RWTH Hallenfußball Cup again this year after submitting their creative application in the form of a soccer home for different nations. The Intackers United had to face some stiff competition in their group and they showed their outstanding team spirit by fighting for every ball on the pitch. At the close of a full day of sports and fun, the team could secure a good 14th place. International Academy will be happy to sponsor a team for the tournament yet again next year. We are all very proud of the 2015 soccer team! Upcoming Events Hello everyone! My name is Nikolas Schierhorst and I’m happy to say that I recently became part of the International Academy team. I moved to Aachen about three and a half years ago to study Industrial Engineering here at the RWTH and even though I am technically German and my parents are both from Germany, it is my first time living here. I was born in Kingston, Jamaica, where I lived for the first seven years of my life. After moving to numerous other countries and continents, I finally ended up in Brussels, Belgium. Here I finished high school and decided to move to Aachen, not only to study, but also to finally experience life in Germany. It is because of my many travels abroad that I feel at home in an international environment and always find it a pleasant and enjoyable experience to meet new people from around the world, but also understand the thrills and difficulties that can arise when moving to a new country. This is just one of the many reasons why I am very excited to be working with the International Academy, with the opportunity to help and get to know YOU – the students we are doing all of this for! FORD Plant Our last 1-day excursion in April led us with the new 2014 students and some students of the 2013 batch to the Ford Manufacturing Plant in Cologne where the Ford Fiesta is produced. By train we went through the production halls and we were able to follow the whole production chain and saw how the engines, transmissions, forging and casting parts are produced.
