MasterWorks of New Mexico Celebrates Seventeen Years The MasterWorks of New Mexico Spring Art Show is now in its seventeenth year of exhibition! It began with a unique vision, that of combining the talents and experiences of existing fine arts organizations, each representing artists throughout New Mexico, to sponsor a show of New Mexico's finest art. The charter board of representatives consisted of the Pastel Society of New Mexico, the New Mexico Watercolor Society, and Miniature Arts Bardean. During the second year a fourth arts society Rio Grande Art Association was added. It is for oils, acrylics, and mixed media not framed under glass. The societies are always open for new membership but this is not a requirement for entry in MasterWorks. The Spring Show is in fact four separately juried shows, which are hung together after judging and the awarding of ribbons and prizes. Opening Reception 2014 MasterWorks is held in April at Expo New Mexico in the Hispanic Arts Building. Opening Reception 2014 3 Judge and Jurors for 2015 MasterWorks of New Mexico Standard Size Paintings Judge Joe Anna Arnett Joe Anna Arnett earned a degree in fine arts from the University of Texas, and then moved to New York to study at the Art Student's League. She has exhibited at the Albuquerque Museum of Fine Arts, The Tucson Museum of Fine Arts, and The National Cowgirl Museum in Fort Worth, The Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts, the Cincinnati Museum Center, and Art Asia in Hong Kong. Arnett's art and articles have been featured in The Artist's Magazine, American Arts Quarterly, ART Idea, Australian Artists Magazine, Southwest Art and Western Art Digest. Her production company's first release, Still Life Live, is a four-disc set of 8 hours of art instruction. Zaplin Lampert Gallery on Canyon Road has represented Arnett for over 25 years. Juror Braldt Bralds Born in the Netherlands, attending the Grafische School in Rotterdam at 12, Bralds is basically a self-taught successful illustrator. On his first visit to New York in 1978, he was commissioned to paint a cover for Time Magazine. Many covers followed: Time, Newsweek, Der Spiegel, Omni, The Washington Post, Rolling Stone, Atlantic Monthly, and work in Esquire, Playboy, Penthouse, and National Geographic. He has illustrated book covers for publishers around the world, including Mists of Avalon, and designed 3 stamp issues for the United Nations and USPS. He has received the Clio Award for Best Illustration of the Year, the Hamilton King Award from the Society of Illustrators in NYC and induction into the Hall of Fame of the Dutch Society of Illustrators for lifetime achievement. Juror Elizabeth Sandia Elizabeth Sandia has an extensive professional background in art as a magazine illustrator, advertising art director, instructor, and residential architectural designer (Canada & US). In 1995 she gave up her design practice in Key West and moved to Santa Fe to devote her time to painting. Sandia's work has been featured in American Art Collector, Pastelagram, Art Talk, The Pastel Journal, Southwest Art, International Artist, Focus Santa Fe, American Artist, The Artist Magazine, Wildlife Art, and others. Sandia's work also appears in the book 200 Great Painting Ideas for Artists. Her awardwinners are in corporate and private collections, including three in the US Embassy in Turkey. She is a Signature Member of the Pastel Society of America. Juror Kevin Tolman Born in Detroit, Michigan in 1949, Tolman attended classes at the Institute of Art, and at Cass Tech, an arts magnet high school. He is a graduate of the Center for Creative Studies, also in Detroit. In 1977 he painted in Ireland for 9 months, returned to Texas for his first one-man show, then Lawrence, Kansas and LA before moving to the Ramah Navajo Reservation in NM in 1981. He now resides outside of Albuquerque, taking time for two lengthy stays in Portugal. His works can be found in many corporate collections, including the permanent collection of the Albuquerque Museum. Tolman currently works in a variety of media including drawing in pencil and caran d'ache, and painting in both acrylic and oil, often with collage and mixed media on canvas and paper. The works are organic abstractions and often based on observation of nature. 4 Judge and Jurors for 2015 MasterWorks of New Mexico Miniature Size Fine Art Judge Carol Lopez Carol Lopez is mostly self-taught, but studied and trained in Japan, with a resulting Asian influence in her work. Since discovering the most ancient painting medium (beeswax) and encaustic techniques almost twenty years ago, she has worked exclusively in this medium. Carol's award-winning paintings are found in private collections all over the world, and are available in her gallery and home studio, Galeria de Suenos, in Los Ranchos, NM. One of her proudest achievements was being selected as the featured artist in the summer 2007 edition of Heart (Women Living with Passion) Magazine. She was also inducted into the National League of American Pen Women (2006). Juror Lannie Alexander An Art Education major, Lannie, a Denver native, enjoyed her years teaching, studying and touring in Asia, Europe and Mexico. She earned a graduate degree at UNM and then embarked on her APS teaching career. A signature member of the NMWS, Lannie has exhibited her water media art in single artist and group shows in multiple venues, and is devoted to innovative art programs for children. She is board president of Art in the School and a steering committee member of La Mesa Arts Academy where she also taught for several years. The proceeds of her watercolor cards benefit Albuquerque's shelter animals. Juror John Bell John Bell received his BFA from New York City's School of Visual Arts in 1974. After moving to New Mexico, he worked at Sandia National Labs where he received numerous awards for computer animation. His work ranges widely, from airbrush to silver work, wood and metal sculpture, computer programming/animation and videography. He has received MasterWorks awards for miniatures in acrylic and sculpture, and his paintings can be seen at the Watermelon Gallery in Cedar Crest. John has collaborated on public art projects in New Mexico for the Museum of Natural History, a mural in Corrales, and trail markers in Elena Gallegos. Juror Susan Evans Susan Evans was born in Louisiana and began drawing animals and people and many things at a very early age. After 20 years as a commercial artist and illustrator, she entered an apprenticeship with a classically trained oil painter in 1995. Susan's quick success has been attributed to her study of the rich tradition of chiaroscuro and the Still Life era of the 1700s in Holland and Flanders. Quickly mentored into Breckenridge Gallery in 1996 and Santa Fe in 1997 Susan has enjoyed international collectors ever since. She now makes her home in Albuquerque, New Mexico and is represented by Matrix Fine Art in the Nob Hill area, who -- in addition to local sales -- sells her work to buyers in New York City, Toronto, and Singapore at International Art Fairs. 5 2015 MasterWorks of New Mexico Standard Size Paintings All paintings in this exhibition are for sale.
