He Is Risen!
From The Pastor…I Was Wrong
Fred Craddock is perhaps the greatest American preacher of the second half of the 20th Century, and he died last weekend.
Craddock was the pastor of Cherry Log Christian Church in the mountains of North Georgia, Professor of Preaching at Candler
School of Theology at Emory University, and an innovator and giant in the field of preaching. His As One Without Authority
changed the landscape of homiletics in America, and nearly every preacher who stands in a pulpit today has been influenced by
Craddock in one way or another.
Craddock is remembered by many for his great stories. As a young preacher he began the habit of always carrying a
simple wire-bound notebook and recording stories as they happened. He would then read through those hundreds of pages

The May Memorial Youth will be
attending the
All Sons & Daughters Concert
@ PCC Powhatan Campus
March 22, tickets: $15
PCC is welcoming back the band All Sons & Daughters to lead a night of worship and conversation. This
will be a night of, just that, worship and conversation. All Sons & Daughters, beyond being one of my
favorite bands, is a very mature and faith-driven set of
worship leaders. This will be a great chance to experience worship in a different venue and open up our
hearts to deeper discussion about faith.
Easter Candy—For anyone
that would like to help provide candy for the Easter
Egg hunt, a basket will be in
the hallway by Sheri’s
office.
Race Car Derby!
RA’s/TeamKid Royal Racer’s Event will
take place on April 19th at 4:00 p.m.
It's very likely that this event will be sold out
quickly, so it is important to let Chris know that
you would like to go ASAP so we can
get tickets!!!!

We will meet again this Sunday at 5:00 p.m. This is a prayer
time that consists primarily of silence, although we will have brief conversation, listen to a reading about a deeper prayer life, and share
prayer concerns. We are meeting in the Esther Sunday School classroom, and it lasts approx. 45 minutes. You will not pray aloud in front
of others.
If you have a need in your life of silence and a centering influence that makes you aware of the presence of God, this is for you!

From the Pastor (Continued from page 1)
(dozens of notebooks) of stories as he prepared sermons, finding a story from his
own life that would fit the particular sermon. I’ve told many Craddock stories,
but have never told my favorite, one he titled “I Was Wrong.” I have included it
here, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.
"My mother took us to church and Sunday school; my father didn’t go.
He complained about Sunday dinner being later when she came home. Sometimes the preacher would call, and my father would say, "I know what the church
wants. Church doesn’t care about me. Church wants another name, another
pledge, another name, and another pledge. Right? Isn’t that the name of the
game? Another name, another pledge." That’s what he always said.
Sometimes we’d have a revival. Pastor would bring the evangelist and
say to the evangelist, "There’s one now, sic him, get him, get him," and my father would say the same thing. Every time, my mother in the kitchen, always
nervous, in fear of flaring tempers, of somebody being hurt. And always my father said, "The church doesn’t care about me. The church wants another name
and another pledge." I guess I heard it a thousand times.
One time he didn’t say it. He was in the veteran’s hospital, and he was
down to 73 pounds. They’d taken out his throat, and he said, "It’s too late." They
put in a metal tube, and X-rays burned him to pieces. I flew in to see him. He
couldn’t speak, couldn’t eat. I looked around the room, potted plants and cut
flowers on all the windowsills, a stack of cards twenty inches deep beside his
bed. And even that tray where they put food, if you can eat, on that was a flower.
And all the flowers beside the bed, every card, every blossom, were from persons or groups from the church.
He saw me read a card. He could not speak, so he took a Kleenex box
and wrote on the side of it a line from Shakespeare. If he had not written this line, I would not tell you this story. He wrote: "In
this harsh world, draw your breath in pain to tell my story."
I said, "What is your story, Daddy?"
And he wrote, "I was wrong."
If you would like to read a little more about Fred Craddock, CNN featured a wonderful article on him a couple of years
ago. You can find the article at http://www.cnn.com/2011/11/27/us/craddock-profile/
