Item
Summary of discussion/review
1. Welcome and Introductions
Introductions & meeting called to order at 12:05 by Chair
Elliott Robinson.
2. Action
a. Approval of March 9, 2014 General
Assembly Meeting Minutes
3. Updates
a. Superintendents’ Council meeting
regarding navigation of systems – Elliott
Robinson- Director, Dept. of Social
Services and Nancy Kotowski,
Superintendent-Monterey County Office
of Education.
Action/deliverable
a. Motion Dr. Valerie Barnes, 2nd by Marcia
Parsons. Laurel Lee-Alexander corrected that
Dan Baldwin was not at the last meeting.
Correction noted.
Elliott shared that he, Dr. Kotowski, Ray Bullick and
Mary Adams attended the Superintendents’ Council
meeting. Several things came up in the meeting.
1. Work with school staff to access resources and
connect families.
2. How to assist families with the access of public
assistance programs.
3. Follow through on how to do this- care coordination,
which is management of a case-long term; establish this
at the schools.
4. Financing
5. South County resources, much harder to get there than
Salinas.
6. Possibly a reverse name school lunch list, so it can
check with kids who don’t get CalFresh but possibly
could be eligible.
7. Maybe a training session for school staff from the
different agencies. Would like to continue the
relationship with schools. Dr. Kotowski shared that there
needs to be follow up with the families, by the schools,
but how? This will be discussed further. Sam’s Guide is
a good resource. Francine Rodd brought attention to the

c. Early Childhood Development
Initiative. (Nina Alcaraz, ECDI Manager)
delivery of services on site. Elliott Robinson stated that
would be in the next iteration of the project. Kari Yeater
cited Family Resource Centers as a model, and each
school site having a person to refer students to services.
Ashley provided an update on All Kids, Our Kids and the
“Why” information about the program. They have
received resources and the leadership team meets
monthly. They have come up with a draft Mission
Statement and should have it finalized by June: “To
transform school & community culture.” Vision
statement unveiled at a later date. We will look at the
evaluations at the meeting in June. Ashley introduced
new staff. Goals are: strategic and evaluation plans will
be developed by the end of the year. See attached Power
Point Presentation.
Nina shared that ECDI Strategic Work Plan draft.
Looking for steering committee to assist with this.
ECDI accomplishments and asking for input to look
forward. The vision for ECDI is the vision of Children’s
Council. Kari Yeater reminded the Council to consider
where Early Childhood programs have been cut, where
do we need to ask for restorative resources, and where
do we need NEW resources. Nina Alcaraz responded
that the strategy is to use the resources that are available
most efficiently. Alcaraz also spoke about raising
awareness of Early Childhood because not all members
on School Boards throughout the county might
understand the importance. Questions posed to the
Council: What does it mean to be an ambassador of
ECDI? How can I support ECDI? What do I need from
ECDI staff? Responses included the following: Exercise
your voice in your professional capacity. Model
workplace/internal practices that are child/family
friendly. Raise ECDI issues. Allow communication
channels you have access to to be used to raise
awareness. Coordinated messaging. Make messages

simple and focused so that a person with no EC
background can grasp it. Utilize the most powerful
indicators, and develop key points. Share the indicators
that most resonate with your passion. Recommendation
to choose a week when all CC Members/agencies can
post on social media or disseminate via email
coordinated messages.
Please see attached Power Point.
