1. Is your spouse on board? Some are fortunate enough to have another income supporting the home and a spouse who says “go for it!”
Others have spouses who need the security of a steady income. Not all
of us are risk takers. In order to succeed in your own business you need
those you love to be cheerleaders, not someone you have to prove yourself to.
2. Is there a market for what you want to do? In other words as the
saying goes, “you cannot sell igloos to the Eskimo.” Sometimes people
will come to me wanting to sell a skill or product in an already very saturated market. Can they succeed? Yes, but they must be willing to do the
work to distinguish themselves to do so. It will be an uphill struggle.
3. That leads us to another question. Are you willing to do the work?
Owning your own business requires being a good networker, marketing
person and of course a bookkeeper. Can you do it all? Are you willing to
put in the hours that it takes to build a successful business? Some of us
live to work, others of us work to live. Which are you? If you can’t live to
work, think twice about starting your own business at this time.
4. Location, Location, Location. Are you starting a business in an area
where the demographics meet the demand? Do the folks have the money
or need for your product?
5. Can you work from your home for a while, just to keep the overhead low?
6. How long can you work without making money? If you have a family of four with one in college and a wife at home, this is not probably a
good time to be starting out on your own. If you are an empty nester with
a working spouse, why not realize your dream?
7. Do you need funding for your business? A starting physical therapist
has major overhead with equipment purchases, building and education
loans. A web designer has the ability to start a business in his or her home
using acquired skills at a very low overhead in comparison. If you need a
loan, do you have collateral to cover a loan for start up costs?
8. Can you stand the red tape required by a business start up in Illinois? The cost, procedures and wait to start a business in Illinois is one of
the toughest of all the states.
Starting a business is not for everyone, but for those who do, they will
find the rich rewards of being their own boss and who knows, maybe will

** The Pearl Street bridge is one of the oldest
and largest iron truss bridges in the state. It was
created by the now-defunct Milwaukee Bridge
and Ironworks Co., during the 1880’s. In 1976,
when the bridge was scheduled for demolition, it
was rescued by TCI Industries. Now the one lane
bridge is brought back to McHenry and is hoped
to be added to the third phase of the Riverwalk.

the Riverwalk Foundation helping to bring The

Local Author Writes Book on Boating on the Fox
David Lester developed a 580 page pictorial history recounting
regional development and boating activity in the Fox Valley area. With
late 1800’s tourism reigning supreme led by steam paddle excursions
boats and railroad lines, the Fox Valley became Chicagoland’s watery
playground. One mostly unknown fact about our taken for granted
waterway and according to Lester, tourism and boating also led to Fox
Valley becoming the home to more national championship title winning
boat racers than racers from any other single body of water in the world.

MC3 Top Networkers for January and February
Jeff Miller, with US Health advisers, is the top MC3 networker for January with seven points. Denny Norton, of Performance Unlimited auto repair services, was the top networker in the
group for February with five points. Members of the group
receive one point each for attending meetings, giving referrals, having face-to-face meetings with other members
and bringing visitors to the group. MC3 meets at 7:30am

November 21st at the VFW. Shop With A Cop aids children from low income families treating them to a Christmas
shopping trip with one of McHenry’s Police force. Children
pick items for their family members and one for themselves. Children are nominated by local social organizations along with
churches, school counselors, etc. and then submitted to the Police Department. The Chamber’s Marketing Connection Group MC3 is the sole
provider of funds for this community effort.

Boston Becomes Delta’s Eighth Nonstop
Destination From MKE Milwaukee
Delta’s new nonstop service to Boston will be operated with CRJ-900
dual-class jets, featuring 12 seats in first class, 12
seats in Economy Comfort and 52 seats in economy
and will begin June 5th. The new flights, which will
operate six days per week, will depart Milwaukee
at 7:10am and arrive in Boston at 10:26am. Return
flights will leave Boston at 7:20pm and arrive in Milwaukee at 9:02pm. Introductory fares start at just

Lee & Carol Cooney Donation to McHenry
Riverwalk Foundation
The McHenry Riverwalk Foundation has announced a gift of $2,500
by Lee & Carol Cooney to the Foundation for future improvements of the
McHenry Riverwalk. The McHenry Riverwalk Foundation was formed in
2002 to assist the City of McHenry in its programs to develop parkways
and walking paths on public land along the Fox River. With a pedestrian
bridge over Boone Creek and views of the river, the project is intended
to help revitalize the downtown business area and provide easy access to
a beautiful recreational area for residents and visitors. The Foundation is
trying to advance the extension of this amenity by obtaining private donations and not using public funding. Anyone or any groups interested in
helping fund the Riverwalk should contact John J. Smith, the Foundation
President, at 815-236-3700. The Cooney’s names will be added to the
plaque along with many other supporters of the Riverwalk at the entrance
off Green Street.
Outlook for Today’s Investors: Less Certainty - but
Potential Opportunities
Smartphones, tablets and other technological innovations of today
have made our lives more enjoyable and productive
in many ways. Yet when it comes to investing for the
future, our predecessors in the 1950s and 1960s may
have had an easier time of it than we do.
What’s changed? First, real wages - wages after
inflation is taken into account - have stagnated for
about 40 years. Secondly, guaranteed pensions have
largely disappeared. To help compensate for these
losses, you’ll need to consider two things: investing
for growth and taking advantage of every retirement plan available to you,
such as your 401(k) and IRA. Putting as much as you can afford into these
tax-advantaged accounts can help you build the resources you may need
for a comfortable retirement.

payments, we don’t have the “certainties” that many people had in previous decades. But look closely at the opportunities you do have as you

A Bag of Marbles
A man had lost his job. He had an interview for a new job, but traffic
kept him from making the appointment. The lottery ticket he bought that
day didn’t even win. He was having a bad day.
After dinner, he went for a walk along the beach. As he strolled along,
barefoot in the sand, with the sun setting in the West, his foot struck
something. He reached down and picked it up. It was a small bag full
of marbles. “Just my luck,” he thought. Then, he had an idea. He took a
marble out of the bag and tossed it into the sea as he said, “This for that
stupid job. I didn’t like that job anyway.” “That felt good,” he said as he
took out the second marble. “This is for traffic. I hate traffic.” “That felt really good,” he said as he grabbed the next one.
This went on for the better part of an hour. In the beginning, the marbles
went pretty fast. As he was getting to the bottom of the bag, he really had
to think. But, over the course of that hour, he had let go of all of the things
that had been holding him back. He had two marbles left. He took one of
them in his hand and said, “Here is for all of the good choices I am going
to make going forward in my life.” He threw that marble as hard as he had
ever thrown anything in his life. As he heard it plunk in the water, he decided to keep the last marble as a memory of this night. He had not felt so
good in a long time. He had thrown all of his troubles into the sea and he
was ready for a new beginning. He put the marble in his pocket and went
home with a new bounce in his step.
At home, his wife noticed a difference in him right away. She asked,
“What have you been up to?” He smiled and took the marble out of his
pocket and showed it to her. He was going to tell her how he threw all of
his troubles into the sea and he was ready for a fresh start.
Before he could say a word, she said, “What a beautiful Pearl. Where did
you get it?” He looked at his hand. He was, in fact, holding an absolutely
beautiful pearl. A pearl that would change their lives, forever. He sold the
pearl and paid all of their debt and did get that new beginning. From time
to time he thought about that walk along the beach. His old self would
have been full of self pity for all the pearls he threw away. His new self
knew that is was the best walk he had ever taken.
There are three morals to this story:
#1: What looks like a bag of marbles may be a bag of pearls - These
pearls are your friends and your family. Your clients and your referral partners. Your neighbors and anyone else you associate with. Are you shining
these pearls and wearing them proudly, or are you throwing them away
one by one?
#2: When you let go of your troubles good things will happen to you.
So many people are focused on all of the negative situations around them
and they never see the amazing world that is right in front of them.
#3: The most important moral of this story is: When you bring home a
pearl to mamma, she will be happy. And, when mamma is happy, nothing
else matters. Now, get off the bench and get back into the game!
