SPEED SIGNS
Westcotec Ltd’s range of speed signs have been proven to reduce vehicle speeds.
The sign only activates when a speeding vehicle is detected.
Speed Signs
Our signs are lightweight, making it possible to fit them unobtrusively into the most sensitive
of areas. They can be easily fitted to existing sites and street light columns.

The light sensor adjusts to ambient light levels, reducing output at night to maintain contrast.
This cuts unwanted light pollution - a major nuisance to residents.

SIDs - Speed Indicator Device
SIDs accurately measure the oncoming vehicles speed and displays this value to the driver.
A number of variations are available, including portable versions that can be carried and
installed on different sites by a single person. The sign face itself can also display a number of
different messages along with the speed.
SIDs are cost effective compared with road humps, chicanes and other expensive measures,
and pose no problem for emergency vehicles, whilst noise and nuisance are totally absent.
Transport for London Street Management’s Report on the Effectiveness of SIDS Reducing
Vehicle Speeds concluded that SIDs are effective at reducing speeds, reducing speeds 200
metres downstream of the sign and a collision reduction of 5.6%.
This report also found that an efficient method of operating SIDs was to rotate them around
several sites. Westcotec’s portable SID is shown to be ideal.

Portable Signs
PORTABLE SIGNS
All 300mm signs including Mini SIDs and SIDs with SLOW DOWN can be made portable.
Light weight signs make for easy installation by a single person.
All portable signs come complete with batteries , battery charger, bracket set and cover.
All portable signs come with a full 12 months warranty, covering everything apart from
vandalism, impact damage and theft.
Fixings available for padlocks to increase security.
Data collection can be enabled for all signs (see page 10).
Extra bracket sets are usually purchases for post mounted portable, in order to easily
move the sign without having to move the bracket.

SCHOOL SYSTEMS
All integral time clocks in school signs can be programmed in advance for a few years ahead.
School holidays disable the sign; school terms during periods when children are arriving/
leaving school grounds enable the sign.
Bluetooth option enables changing the times/adding holiday periods to the time clock to be
done without the need of connecting any cables to the sign.

School Systems
Full LED school signs can also be used as vehicle activated signs. For example during school
times over speed vehicles set off the school children image; then during out of school times
the sign can operate as a speed reminder sign to drivers.

Safer Crossing System

Westcotec’s Safer Crossing System is a revolutionary new way of ensuring the safety of
pedestrians in places where there are no marked crossings on the road.
The system warns motorists of the crossing in two places, with two different methods.
The first is a vehicle activated LED crossing sign with ‘SLOW DOWN’ legend, positioned in
each direction well in advance of the crossing zone. The second warning to motorists is a pair
of twin amber flashers, placed immediately adjacent to the crossing zone. By providing
motorists with prior warning, vehicle speed can be reduced before the crossing comes into
view. The twin amber flashers pinpoint exactly where the pedestrians are/will be progressing
across the road.

FLOOD SYSTEM
A remote detection system measures the depth which is then sent to signage on all of the
approach roads showing the depth of the flood in inches and Cm.
The driver can then make a decision based on real time information

Flood System
Westcotec have recently designed and installed advanced warning signs that show the
depth of the water so cars may choose to divert before reaching the flooded area.

Loop Activated Systems
LOOP ACTIVATED SIGNS

The motorcycle warning system uses loops in the road which are specifically configured to
detect a speeding motorcycle and display a warning sign located further down the road,
making the rider aware of their current speed.
The loop detection kit is kept in a feeder pillar next to the where the loops have been cut, with
radio transmitter on an adjacent post, and the receiver on the sign. This reduces costs due to
not requiring any digging for the communication between the loops and sign, as long as the
radios are within range and have a clear view between one another. A free site visit is
recommended to ensure maximum benefit and suitability.
This system has been proved to be highly effective within the motorcycling community,
making the rider aware of hazards and relative speed which ensures a safer journey for all.
This system has been designed to warn drivers of a narrowing road ahead where large vehicles are
often forced onto the opposite side of the road.
A sign is placed in both directions of the narrowing road. The same scenario is taken into
consideration on both approaches, meaning that whichever way the large vehicle is coming from,
the oncoming driver will always be warned. The sign face only shows when a large vehicle is
detected using loops in the road.
No mains cabling required - our advanced sign design means that solar and wind power are
now an option for more situations than ever before.

DATA COLLECTION
Data collection is available with all of our signs as an added extra.
This means that as well as giving a warning to motorists through the activated sign face, you
are able to keep of track of the vehicle speed, count and date at different intervals for each
passing vehicle. We also produce a unit to show vehicle type (car, lorry, motorbike etc.)
The data can be presented graphically and can be downloaded at the site and remotely via
GPRS.

Westcotec’s products have been officially certified with the CE mark
Westcotec signs have been thoroughly laboratory tested and are now fully compliant to
EN-12966. As a result of these tests we can now bear the CE mark on all of our signs.
We now hold BSI ISO-9001, along with Construction Products Regulation, Factory Production
Control and Constancy of Performance certificates from TUV SUD ensuring that the quality and
service from Westcotec is maintained.
We achieved maximum ratings for structural performance, showing how even the most violent
of storms and even acts of vandalism will in most cases cause no functional damage.
All signs that are installed on the Highway should now be compliant and bear the
CE mark.
