Monday, February 2, 2015 UNDERSTANDING THE FIRST NATIONS PERSPECTIVE ON CHILD WELFARE ISSUES WITH A DISCUSSION OF CUSTOMARY CARE Justice Cohen has agreed to chair this session. The Child and Family SeTVices Act contains special provisions, including provisions regarding customary care, relating to the disposition of child protection cases involving Aboriginal persons. Come share in this discussion about permanency planning for the children of Aboriginal persons or persons who share a First Nations heritage. Monday, March 2, 2015 CHILD SUPPORT IN COMPLEX FAMILY SITUATIONS, INCLUDING MULTIPLE FAMILIES, MULTIPLE SUPPORT ORDERS Justice Murray will chair this session. The application of the Child Support Guidelines appears straight forward, almost mechanical, until it isn't. Come join in this important discussion about what to do when there are multiple families with multiple support orders and your client seeks to have the guideline amount adjusted. What, if anything, can be done? Monday, April 13, 2015 THE GOOD ENOUGH PARENT Justice P. Jones has agreed to chair this session. One of the purposes of the Child and Family SeTVices Act is to assist parents or other caregivers who may be experiencing difficulties in parenting their children, so that the care they offer their children, will at least meet a minimally acceptable standard as dictated by the Act. What does it mean to be a "good enough parent"? What happens when the parent's care falls below applicable standards? Who sets the standards? If you practice child protection law, you really should not miss this session. Monday, May 4, 2015 THIRD PARTY DISCLOSURE Justice Sherr will chair this session. This session, is all about what you do when you discover that the information necessary to properly represent your client is in the possession of a third party. An experienced judge and a panel of your peers will discuss how to obtain such disclosure. Expect precedents and tip sheets. Monday, June 1, 2015 PROFESSOR THOMPSON ON "CHILDREN'S STATEMENTS" Justice Weagant has agreed to chair this session. Professor Rollie Thompson from the Schulich School of Law at Dalhousie University has agreed to speak to us about the current law on the admissibility of children's statements in family law, from statements that indicate a child's wishes, his/her state of mind, to child's statements intended to be used to support a finding of protection in a child protect proceeding. He will discuss how you might argue for and against the admission of such statements. ALL SESSIONS WILL INCLUDE A CASE OF MONTH – PROFESSIONALISM COMMENTARY = END OF SESSIONS - SUMMER BREAK = The individual attendance fee for each session is set at $25.00.
