ASID LA is embracing the challenge of becoming “The Core of the
Design Network!” In doing so, we believe that we will achieve greater
recognition for the professionalism of our membership. We will
increase our presence in the public eye through marketing our
members through advertising, social media, community participation
and community service. We will continue our deep commitment to
continuing education, as well as support our student membership
through scholarships and educational opportunities. I ask all of you
with ideas on issues our chapter should address, to send me an email
to start the conversation. Please know, if you want something done,
you have to be instrumental in doing it. We are one team, and it is
important that all players get on the field.
We are looking forward to an exciting year for ASID LA. The board of directors and our media team has
hit the ground running and we will put our membership in the public eye throughout the year. We are
increasing our public presence through magazine ads featuring our designers and IP members, video
spots on our YouTube channel, and constant updating of our social media sites. We have connected with
two design magazines that are committed to widening ASID LA’s exposure, and we are working to
develop a relationship with other social media sites that will continue to increase our visibility. We
recognize that the world of design and social media are made for one another, and we intend to take full
advantage of the opportunities it holds for us. There is an ever-growing opportunity to have your work
published, take advantage.
If you would like to be part of this, let us know.
Another goal for this year is to increase our participation in community service projects. As an organization, ASID LA has been committed to many rewarding hours of community service, and we will make a
deeper commitment this year. We are developing a Community Service Outreach Committee that will
guide our members who wish to develop projects in outlying communities. We are extending the challenge to our membership to explore their local areas to develop a more meaningful relationship in their
community. It is the most important way to utilize your talent, and show the public what an ASID
designer can do. As the saying goes, “From community service projects, to paying projects in the community.” The rewards are many, the drawbacks few.
If you would like to be part of this, let us know.
To develop programing that encourages the interaction of all our membership, especially those who feel
so remote to L.A., we are moving two of our meetings to outlying areas. This will allow us to reach those
we rarely get to see. We hope to encourage and increase participation in all of our events, and look to all
of you for suggestions to achieve that goal.
If you would like to be part of this, let us know.
As a chapter, we have plans to bring our IP membership and designers together via interesting partnerships and events. As designers, remember our IP members can be our best friends and most reliable
sources, and we want to encourage and grow that relationship. This year, our IPs will receive a special
honor at our Holiday Party.
If you would like to be part of this, let us know.
Remember, the more each of us participates and contributes, the more we all benefit.
If you see a common thread in this long, windy, article, there is one. We are all apart of this organization,
and I want you to be present and reap the benefits of membership. I want you to know you are
welcomed, invited and needed. Please join the active membership, it will bring you many opportunities
and rewards. The appellation is significant, but the opportunities it affords you are vast, please make use
of them.

LOS ANGELES
In late September, Govenor Jerry Brown signed Senate Bill 308, extending the interior
design certification statute to January 1, 2018. The bill codifies and protects the
appellation “certified interior designer” to be used only by those persons issued
certification through California Council for Interior Design (CCIDC).
There are two new provisions to the statute that were not in the previous legislation:
• Effective January 1, 2013, all certified interior designers must use a written contact prior to commencing
work, which must include specific language and information.
• All CCIDC meetings must be open, subject to the rules of the Bagley-Keene Open Meeting Act.
In October, I attended a 2-day ASID Legislative meeting, along with other California chapter presidents and
president-elects, conducted by Don Davis, ASID Director of Governmental and Public Affairs. Although
California has extended the interior design statute for four years, it does not confer to the legal status of a
practice act. We worked together to hash out a Memorandum of Understanding that sets forth our legislative
policy goals for the state. These goals include:
• Reinstate NCIDQ as the certifying exam, which would allow California designers a reciprocal right to practice in other states. In 2008, IDEX became the certifying exam, which is only acceptable in California.
Without NCIDQ certification, an interior designer cannot bid on government contracts or practice across
state lines.
• Gaining uniform acceptance of stamping privileges in all jurisdictions. Currently, stamping privileges are
sporadic.
We are fortunate to have the strength of ASID to lobby for our rights to practice as professionals. ASID, as an
organization, provides grants to the Interior Design Coalition of California, (IDCC), to fund lobbying efforts
to achieve a practice act. The Coalition, which represents both IIDA and ASID, is fighting to gain respect for
interior design professionals through legal status. If we are not a legally recognized profession, then we
cannot participate in issues that affect us. IDCC needs the financial support of individuals to continue its
work. I encourage you to join (idc-ca.org).

The Big Event
By Mark Silverman, IP

The Los Angeles design community is still abuzz from the excitement
generated at ASID LA’s Big Event. Held on August 21st at the Paul
Williams designed community center in Hollywood, the occasion heralded
the newly-formed alliance between ASID LA and the property-owning
Assistance League of Los Angeles. The League is renowned for its support
to those in need. ASID LA was there as part of a kick-off campaign to
launch fundraising to refurbish the facility, as ASID LA pledged to donate
all proceeds from the afternoon-long affair.
Victoria + Albert’s very own Brian Lerkins got the ball rolling with a jampacked CEU on the history of bathing. (Your Humble Journalist hopes
Brian didn’t leave any rings around the tub!)
Former ASID LA Chapter President Jean Pinto did what she does bestcast her inimitable charm while collecting for the ASID Foundation. And
who managed to draw a crowd everywhere she went? Why, it’s our everpolished petite professional in-bound chapter President Cindi Burnett. It’s
clear she plans to lead by example!
The always-ebullient Eleanor Shrader-Schapa regaled fellow designers
with the history of the property and its ties to Tinseltown, as ASID LA’s
very own Fellow Darrell Schmitt followed with a brief chat about prospective plans for the property. Fantastic!
There was one small dark cloud hanging over the event- Former Chapter
Prez Fernando Diaz was unable to attend due to health concerns. But you
can rest easy folks- YHJ has it straight from la boca del caballo that he is
well on the mend! If looks are any indication, Señor D is certainly back in
the pink!
Membership Director Frank Slesinski and inbound Professional
Development Director Laura Schwartz-Muller arrived fresh from
acclaimed performances at Dwell Labs. Frank and Laura had separate
swings at loft units. And YHJ is here to tell you both hit major home runs!
Congrats to each!
Everyone welcomed Klaus Bellinghausen of Frosch Wines for sharing his
extraordinary creations. Klaus and crew were pouring Chardonnays,
Rieslings, Gewurztraminers, and other varietals YHJ can barely spell.
Ouch!
And what was the magic thread that so creatively wove all these events
together in such a seamless fashion? It was the ASID Industry Partner
Table Top Exhibition: forty-one vendors displaying the latest and greatest
in design products and services. Remarkable!
And how did it all come together? None other than Closet Factory’s
Jeanine Wainrib and Wolf Sub-Zero’s Julie Arcelay managed to prop up
YHJ long enough to stage a spectacular affair! Way to go, Ladies!
The coup de grâce was a delightful soirée of sumptuous fare that was
greatly welcomed by Designers and IPs alike. There was even a drawing(don’t call it a raffle!)- of design items donated by the IPs. YHJ was
honored to act as emcee and was ably assisted by the ubiquitous Mrs.
Arcelay.
At the end of the day one thing was certain: a grand time was had by all!
Ciao for now

Castec, Quality Window Fashions Backed by Forty
Years of Innovation and Personalized Service
By Darra Bishop, Allied ASID
DB: What window covering products does Castec offer?
Recently, I had a chance to sit down with Gerry Castellaw, owner of Castec.
He has been in business for over 40 years, and has had to weather the
many ups and downs of business over that time. I was curious as to how he
had managed to succeed.
GC: I have always been partial to soft window coverings, basically anything
made from fabric. Even during the growth of hard window coverings, we
stuck to learning how to make better soft window coverings. The result is a
company that makes the finest Roman shades, drapery, and other soft
products. Not only do we specialize in the fabrication of high-quality soft
window coverings, but we also make Natural Woven Shades with a wide
selection of unique and exclusive fabrics. Solar Shading through our
Simple Solar Solutions™ program is widely sold and has many applications
in the role of protecting draperies, furniture, and carpet from sun damage,
so it is a very useful part of our product lineup.
DB: How is it that you have managed to build and maintain a window
covering business when so many others have tried and failed or at
least been swallowed up into big national companies?
GC: Well, I started as a window covering installer, then later, became a
retailer. It became clear to me that my reputation, my income, and any
successful growth depend largely on my suppliers. I was always reliable,
but my vendors often were not. So I decided to become a supplier myself…
the kind that I had always wanted and knew any retailer would be grateful
to have. As it turned out, it was a pretty good idea, you would have to look
pretty hard to find one that is more reliable, or one that makes a better
high-quality product.
DB: What sets Castec apart from other window covering companies?
GC: We are unique in our skills and our service level. Every customer has
his own personal Account Manager, who acts as his advocate within the
company. We have learned how to take thousands of orders from all kinds
of customers, large and small, with dozens of custom specifications, every
order different from the next. We know how to successfully communicate
with the customer so that we understand clearly what is wanted and then
communicate those orders to our manufacturing facilities without making
mistakes or disappointing the customer. Add that to very high quality
levels, and you have the core of what differentiates us from other companies in this industry.

Establishing and Growing Client Trust,

ornery contractor, approaching the discussion
with an open heart will undoubtedly lead to the
change of direction that is needed. The third
mistake we make is one that resonated with many
of the attendees; “Listening to Understand” versus
“Listening to Solve” skills. Angela took us through
what it means to truly listen instead of actively
figuring out a solution when a client shares their
concerns. By listening instead of evaluating, trust
can reestablished, and that is what is needed to
successfully communicate with our clients and
solve problems.
As the final event of our chapter’s “The
Distinguished Speaker” series, dynamic
industry coach, Angela Merola, informed and
delighted a rapt audience in the Pacific
Design Center auditorium as she expounded
on her topic: Transforming Difficult
Conversations into Relationship
Strengthening Opportunities.”
With mike in hand and moving through the
audience like a seasoned Oprah, Angela
cajoled audience participation in several role-play scenarios to illustrate
her points. We learned the three biggest mistakes people make in reacting
to conflict, all while tailoring her presentation to be relevant to today’s
interior designer.
A robust Q&A followed Angela’s formal presentation. Kudos to Renata
Harbison, ASID LA Board Member and Director of Professional
Development for organizing and developing this truly worthwhile
program.
The first mistake we make? Not recognizing or acknowledging our
instincts when something is amiss. We’ve all had a situation where something feels “off” with a client. Not starting a conversation to address your
suspicions is a lost opportunity to connect deeper with your client and
maintain the trust. The second mistake we make? Getting defensive when
issues are brought to our attention. Whether it is a displeased client or
The Kravit Showroom in the PDC generously hosted a sumptuous
luncheon catered by Chin Chin. Many thanks to Ronit Navarro at Kravet
for not only providing a delicious luncheon, but as importantly, providing a
venue for ASID members to mingle and share professional experiences.
Several attendees (myself included) lingered after lunch to shop Kravit’s
numerous fabric/wallpaper/furniture/accessories options.

New CEU Cycle and Increase for January, 2014
By Laura D Schwartz-Muller, Allied ASID
Professional Development Director
Greetings Los Angeles Members! Effective this January, 2014 ASID will
begin a new and increased CEU Requirement Cycle for members. Still
offering some of the finest CEU programs and workshops in the Interior
Design Industry, ASID will be expanding eligible CEU’s making it much
easier to reach the newly required 1.0 (10 hours). Approved CEUs such as
webinars and chapter events will continue to be offered to all ASID
Members, with the addition of activities such as authoring a book or
article, keynote speaking engagements, receiving tenure and more.
Also effective this January, all members will be required to have their
IDCEC numbers available “at the time of sign in” at all CEU programming.
No longer will ASID be providing these numbers to members. Here are
two easy tips to having your IDCEC number ready at sign-in:
1. Type your IDCEC number into your phone.
2. Write your IDCEC number on the back of your ASID membership Card
and carry it in your wallet.
Remember, you will NOT get credit for your CEU unless your IDCEC
number is officially submitted by the CEU provider upon each presentation
completion. Shortly thereafter, you will receive an email from IDCEC
alerting you that your CEU is ready for you to confirm on the IDCEC
website with a link taking you directly to the site. You MUST confirm your
attendance on this site for your CEU to be counted.
New CEU procedure also states that members must attend the entire CEU
for your attendance to be valid, therefore the sign-in sheets will be available through the first 10 minutes of the presentation and you will need to
be “signed out” at the conclusion.
If you have any questions regarding your IDCEC number and/or registering your CEU’s please feel free to contact me via email at [email protected] thru the end of February (Please note in the
subject line ASID CEU INFO). Our goal is to help all our Los Angeles
members streamline this process in order to prevent submission delay,
confusion, and increase confidence and overall attendance. We will be
providing fantastic NEW CEU opportunities throughout the year, and
meaningful workshops that bring members current and exciting content
and applicable information.
Via ASID: Effective Jan. 1, 2014, the CEU requirement will increase from
0.6 to 1.0 (i.e., 10 hours). Note that this does not affect the current reporting
period, requiring 0.6 CEUs by Dec. 31, 2013. The first reporting period with
the new 1.0 CEU requirement will begin January 1, 2014 and end on Dec.
31, 2015.
For more information on CEU’s contact Matthew DeGeeter at
[email protected].

On October 8th, the ASID Los Angeles chapter members had the privilege
of touring our newest IP Member, Ethan Allen in Agoura Hills. We were
delighted by an abundance of color and inspired by the CEU (continuing
education unit) “Bringing Back Color; What’s New, What’s Next.” Our
very own Pamela Meyer, former ASID L.A. president, and interior
designer, Roseanna Macpherson, presented the CEU.
Color, color, and color oh my! Deep

with these colors being incorporated
in furnishings, walls and just about
everywhere in the home. The trends

Strong floral prints are popping up on

Collaboration across the Professions,
a Panel Discussion at LightShow West
By Diajeng Hendratmo-Brown
The discussion panel at LightShow West on October 23, 2013, covered the
topics often asked by all design professionals; How to have a successful
collaboration across the different disciplines involved in a project. The
panel of experts in the profession shared their experiences.
This discussion, sponsored by ASID, engaged various professionals in the
interior design and architecture field, with two of the speakers coming
from the lighting design field. The conversation, moderated by Kat Fern,
ASID, covered a broad range of topics that targeted major project disruptions.
The first point of the panel was the importance of a project manager who
can lead a project to its successful completion. Architect Rocky Rockefeller,
AIA used a metaphor comparing project managers to “alpha dogs.” He
explained that an alpha dog is a person or persons who take on the role of
leadership in a project. Rockefeller further stated that alpha dogs take their
own territory. As each discipline has a project lead, the hierarchy of
communication needs to be worked out quickly. He further clarified that
the leaders of each discipline such as the construction project manager and
a design project manager need to meet often.
Cindi Burnett, ASID Los Angeles President and Principal Interior Designer
at Burnett Design Group, pointed out another important role of leadership.

and a team of designers, but also “trust that a team can work together
during the honeymoon [stage] and down the road.”
Mark Gasper of Lutron, and John Brubaker, principal of John Brubaker
Architectural Lighting Consultants, further discussed the topic of trust.
Gasper said that a good example of team building is a team that can “solve a
problem and figure out solutions.” Brubaker spoke about how important it
is to have face-to-face communication, “I insist on meeting [a client] in
person instead of speaking to an assistant. Trying to have a conversation
about a project with an assistant is like getting a suit tailored over the
phone.” He elucidated, “Information is the most important thing to share
in a project.”
Creating a collaborative team of people results in an enjoyable and productive work experience. The process involves culling out the right people for
a project, which is a difficult process but key to a successful outcome.
Importantly, the panel discussion clarified what needs to be achieved by a
collaborative team: Open and thorough line of communication, clear leadership, trust and the proper tools to resolve conflict. These elements are
what make a powerful collaborative team and ultimately, a successful
project.

Design Camp, A Star-Studded Affair
By Jeanne Chung

It hasn’t even been 3 weeks since Design Camp
ended, and I’m still buzzing from the experience.
Design Camp is the brainchild of celebrity
designers Lori Dennis, ASID and Kelli Ellis, who
pulled together a panel of speakers that included
who’s who in the world of design. Over the
course of the Opening Night Cocktail Party and
two full days of inspirational instruction by a starstudded panel of speakers, the 164 campers in
attendance left rejuvenated with many useful
nuggets of information. As Lori and Kelli explain
on designcamp.com, “[Their] secrets are truly the
key ingredients to creating a play book with eye
opening insight of how the successful designer
looks and how a thriving interior business works
today.” With fun and informative speakers
touching on everything from positioning
ourselves as designers in today’s market, to
learning about what amazing new products
Sub-Zero and Wolf have in store, Design Camp
delivered on their promise.

Some of my favorite speakers dispensing provocative design wisdom were:
material covered brought a theme of “Passion” and “Positioning” and the
information covered at Design Camp will ensure that designers today are
on pace with where the business of interior design is going in the future.
Thank you, Lori Dennis and Kelli Ellis for everything you do!
Bill Indursky of Design Life Network, who had us visually aroused with his
2013 Trend Report. There isn’t a better a way to jumpstart the morning
than with Bill at the helm!
Pam Jaccarino, the Editor-in-Chief of Luxe Interiors + Design, who
motivated us with her passion for design, and also gave us insider’s tips
on what every designer wants to know – how to get published.
Kathryn M. Ireland had us in stitches while she took us through an
inspiring slideshow of both her studio in Los Angeles and her home in the
French countryside.
Julie Arcelay and Tracy Burge of Sub-Zero Wolf, who touched upon the
features in the newest line of Sub-Zero refrigerators and Wolf ranges. They
also hosted the fabulous cocktail party at the Sub-Zero/Wolf showroom on
the first evening of Design Camp!
Aaron Danzing, with Williams-Sonoma Designer Marketplace, spoke about
how to establish our brand and position us effectively as designers in the
marketplace.
Jason Clark of Hansgrohe, presented the newest line of Hansgrohe and
Axor bath fixtures. From Raindance showerheads to modular Bouroullec
fixtures, Hansgrohe created excitement for that next bathroom project.
And last, but not least, Kelli Ellis, Lori Dennis, and Jennifer Convy talked
about how they got their start on television and what those who are interested can do to pursue opportunities on screen.
Whether a newbie, or a veteran to the business of interior design, Design
Camp had valuable information to offer everyone in attendance. The

ASID UCLA Extension Student Chapter 8th Annual
Mix It Up!
By Natasha D’Souza, Student ASID

Over 150 people from different facets of interior design gathered on Sunday,
October 20th, to take part in the 8th Annual Mix It Up! held at the hip
outdoor oasis Station Hollywood at the W. The dynamics of this location
was ideal for our chapter celebration and fundraiser. The event pulled in an
amazing array of students, friends, professionals, UCLA Extension faculty
and industry sponsors whom we truly thank for making this gala a smashing
success!
The party was spiced up with Hollywood flair which included a red carpet
step and repeat media wall, a glass of bubbly to toast, fun props to go along
with the photo booth, a signature
cocktail appropriately named
"Design Dose,” scrumptious food
from pigs in a blanket to cheesecake, and most of all, the prizes!
Suzanne Sheppard and Vincent
Mallari from UCLA Extension
More than fifty amazing sponsors
participated with monetary or
prize donations including
Dragonette, Bausman & Co, Nancy
Corzine, MASHstudios and The
Sofa Company. People walked
away with planters, furniture,
vases, tray tables, wine sets, gift
cards and a whole lot more. One
of the most captivating items was
table service at the famous Jazz
Night at W Hollywood. Kiran
Chakravarthy took the win, but no
attendee left empty handed. Many
of us stayed for a night of fun,
music, tempting libations and
tasty treats, and had a fabulous
time with great company.

This night was notably gratifying
for our student chapter as we are
continually striving to offer
education and growth opportunities to the design community. We
are so grateful for our sponsors.
Their generous support gave us
the ability to bring the party to
life and raise funds for our

for the women who reside there will finally come to fruition. Founded in
1951, Friendly House LA is the oldest women’s recovery home in the US,
providing a safe harbor for women suffering from the destruction of alcoholism and drug abuse, and has earned a world-renowned reputation as the
model for successful recovery.
We are particularly appreciative of the support from UCLA Extension and
the ASID LA Chapter. We love your encouraging words and truly enjoy
your company. You motivate us, keep our passion alive, and create a world
