SPARTAN WATER POLO CLUB 2015 Junior Olympics Try-Outs The goal of the Spartan Water Polo Club Junior Olympic (JO) group is to provide a highly competitive training environment for our athletes to participate at the highest possible level while striving for the best finish attainable in the JO Tournament in California. We will be selecting the top 10-12 athletes per age group. If enough athletes try-out, we will consider taking out multiple teams per age group. OPEN TRYOUTS: All age groups 12U, 14U, 16U, 18U for boys and girls PARENT INFORMATIONAL MEETINGS: Wednesday, 4/22 8:00 PM @ East Lansing HS Student Union Wednesday, 4/22 8:00 PM @ Okemos HS Kiva At the beginning of each Boys’ & Girls’ tryout session SITE: East Lansing High School, 509 Burcham Dr., East Lansing, MI DATES: 1st Try-out – Sunday, April 26th Boys 12:00 - 2:45 PM nd rd 2 Try-out – Sunday, May 3 Boys 12:00 - 2:45 PM **Both recommended, One is required TRYOUT FEE: $50 for 1 try-out/$75 for both (Fee will be applied to the Junior Olympic Team Fee or Summer Training Registration Fee if the athlete is participates with Spartan) REGISTRATION: All fees & registration can be paid and completed on-line (preferred method) at the Spartan Water Polo Club website: www.spartanwaterpolo.org Girls 2:45 - 5:30 PM Girls 2:45 - 5:30 PM Walk-up registrations will be permitted during the following times on each training date: Boys: 11:15 - 11:45 AM Girls: 2:00 - 2:30 PM TRYOUT DETAILS: The Coaching Staff will utilize drills, one on one skills, team development skills, and scrimmages to evaluate the athletes. The Coaching Staff will be evaluating each athlete and make the final selections for the teams. Each athlete will be notified via e-mail whether they have been selected for their respective team by Monday evening, May 4th. Each selected athlete will then need to complete the following by Thursday, May 7th in order to confirm their commitment to participate: 1. On-line registration with USAWP – Gold Membership (with Spartan Water Polo Club) 2. Complete all registration forms on the Spartan Water Polo Club website 3. Make the initial JO Team Fee deposit ($200) with the club *JO Team Fee is being estimated at $600-650 – includes coaching expenses, team suit & t-shirt, ground transportation, lodging, team dinner on eve of the first tournament day, and drinks during the games. Team Fundraising activities TBD. **If this is not completed by May 7th, it will be assumed the invitation has been declined, and an alternate may be invited. In the event that an athlete is not initially selected, there may be an opportunity to be chosen as an alternate. The Coaching Staff will determine the needs for each age group. TOURNAMENT AND TRAINING/PRACTICE REQUIREMENTS: Participation in the following Tournaments are required: June 12th - 14th (Friday-Sunday): July 10th - 12th (Friday-Sunday): July 18th (Saturday): USAWP Midwest Zone Jr. Olympic Qualifier (if needed – sites TBD) Great Lakes Classic (hosted by Spartan Water Polo Club) West Ottawa Summer Tournament (Holland, MI) Training/Practice participation expectations: Local Athletes Average of 4 out of 5 practices per week Out-of-Area Athletes (in-state) Average of 3 out of 5 practices per week Out-of-Area Athletes (out of state) Train/Practice on June 8th - 12th, July 6th - 10th, July 16th - 17th Note: The Spartan Water Polo Club understands and realizes that vacation & other plans may have already been set for the summer of 2015. As the result of this information coming out in April, the coaches will be willing give some flexibility depending on what the circumstances are (this applies only to practices, not the try-outs). If you have any questions or concerns please contact our head coaches (listed below): Boy’s - Coach Ron Marsh Girl’s - Coach Matt Latham [email protected] [email protected] JUNIOR OLYMPIC TOURNAMENT INFORMATION: Boy’s Tournament Dates: Girl’s Tournament Dates: July 25th – July 28th (Saturday – Tuesday) July 30th – August 2nd (Thursday – Sunday) Most athlete’s and/or families fly out the day or two before the tournament begins. Flights are the responsibility of athlete/family. Once the teams have qualified we suggest booking flights as soon as possible. The athletes/teams will be staying at the Best Western Plus in Orange County – very near John Wayne Airport and centrally located to the competition pools. There will be a block of rooms available to parents/family members. Transportation to and from the hotel and pools will be provided by the club for the athletes and coaches. We suggest that family members try to carpool as much as possible. The club will also provide a team/club dinner at the hotel the night before the first tournament date with a team meeting to follow. Breakfast will be included with the hotel accommodations while lunch will the responsibility of the athlete though the coaches will provide transportation to restaurants when necessary. Each team will play between 7-11 games while they are out in California – schedules will be dictated by how each team performs.
