Meaningful Makeover Guidelines for
Decorating Teams
The Salvation Army and The Emergency Lodge welcomes individuals, groups,
organizations and corporations to take on the challenge of decorating a room at The
Emergency Lodge. The following are suggested guidelines for the project:

The Salvation Army Emergency Lodge is excited about your interest in the
Makeover Project. The time and date of your makeover will be discussed and
arranged during your initial visit to the shelter.
•
The amount of time to complete a makeover is usually only one to two days
because individuals will have to be displaced during the process. Pre planning is
imperative to be able to accomplish the makeover in the two day time period. The
Lodge staff provides tarps and step stools, other tools must be purchased by the
decorating team.

After taking a tour, the team needs to submit their plan to the Makeover
Committee for approval. Any money for decorating needs to be raised by the team
before they begin.

When the room is finished, there will be a plaque mounted above the door with
the group name and date on it. The plaque will be up for minimum of one year. After
one year, another group is free to decorate it again if all other rooms have also been
done.
•
The room will be cleaned before the makeover and the staff will be available for questions throughout your makeover.
•
An extra gallon of paint needs to be bought and labeled to leave with the Lodge
to use for touch ups in the future.

Room = 12’ x 24’
Window = 90.5” x 50”
Radiator = 2.5’ high, 4’4” wide and 1’ deep
Closet indent = 5’ wide x 28” deep

Minimum Requirements
Bathroom - Paint should be satin or semi-gloss and a wastebasket and some type of towel
rack or hooks is strongly suggested.
Bedding - Four twin (single) beds need to have comforters or an appropriate bed treatment.
Bulletin Board - One or four, must be securely mounted to wall.
Closet indent - A strong durable solution to hanging and storing clothing and other items,
e.g. armoire. If room has a metal locker, it can be primed and painted.
Color Scheme - Please keep it gender neutral and coordinate the room and bath.
Furniture - Due to safety concerns, the room can accommodate only four floor height beds.
There is no room for desks, tables or chairs. Dressers would have to be very sturdy.
Lighting - Due to safety concerns, there is no possibility of alternate lighting sources.
Paint - Needs to be a satin or gloss finish so that it will be washable. Primer will be needed
for the doors and frames. Paint supplies need to be furnished by the Decorating Team which
should include: a drop cloth for the floor, tape, brushes, rollers and a tray. The Lodge will
supply step ladders.
Pictures and posters - Should be mounted securely to the wall and hove no glass or loose
parts.
Pillows and sheets - Each room has four beds which need to have a pillow and sheets
purchased for it.
Shower Curtain - Shower curtain, liner and hooks need to be purchased and hung.
Storage - Under bed storage or cubes that can double as seating, no wheels, solid, small
shelving unit that cannot tip or storage that could be secured with a combination lock.
Towels - Need to be furnished for all four people in the room and coordinate with the theme.
