Hebrew religion. "Ye shall be holy for I the Lord your God am holy," permeates the Book of
Vayikra

serves as the
basis for the unique idea of the holiness of man. The Holiness Code attempts to liberate man from his animal-like
characteristics and make him more human in all his behavior. It serves as a guide to regulate every phase of daily
human life.
Vayikra occupies the middle portion of the Chumash. It represents the heart and core of Torah, for it embraces the
rituals, laws, and commandments by which the Hebrews were to become "a kingdom of priest and a holy nation."
Many people are critical of the book of Vayikra which we began reading this morning. It is the most versatile and
complex book in the Torah, full of contrasts and extremes. About half of it is devoted to Korbanot; the laws of
sacrifices, the functions of Priests and Levites, and the regulations that deal with diet--the things that we are
permitted to eat and those that are forbidden. Then there are sublime chapters and parshiot which contain the basic
ethical doctrines of Judaism. They include such things as "Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself", and a verse I
love to hear, which was later inscribed on the Liberty Bell, "And ye shall proclaim Liberty throughout the land, unto
all the inhabitants thereof."
But, when teaching the book of Vayikra to my classes, both adults and children I sense a sort of spiritual let-down on
their part when we begin to study. To avoid this pitfall, the Torah introduced the discipline of the mitzvah. By
observing special rituals and commandments, the lofty teachings of Judaism are brought home to every Jewish
heart. No amount of talking and preaching about the ideal of Torah and Mitzvot can do as much as observing the
Torah.
Shabbat Shalom
