Call the office or print the info form and email to the office The Talmudic rabbis had a very creative way of reading the Torah's text. This week's Torah portion – Parashat Metsora - deals with the complex set of ritual laws relating to a person stricken with leprosy. In Hebrew, the word for leprosy is "tsa'ra'at," and one who is a leper is called "metsora." On a completely different note, the Torah also addresses the question of Rechilut or gossip, commonly known as "Lashon Hara" (evil tongue). A more severe form of "lashon hara" is "motsi shem ra" (spreading a bad name against someone) -slander and libel, in legal terminology. Noting the similar sound between "metsora" and "motsi shem ra" (or "motsi ra"), the rabbis concluded that one who gossips can be afflicted with leprosy. In other words, negative speech adversely affects the very body from which it emerges. We now bring together all that falls under the aspect of cleanness and uncleanness. We now understand that the metsora deals with leprosy and those who are healed and those who are unable to be healed. Those learning from their mistakes and those unable or unwilling to learn from their mistakes and thereby unhealed. We should learn first to look inward to ourselves before pointing fingers and gossiping about others. Good Shabbos Rabbi Gabe Elias
