DVAR TORAH –VAYIGASH,
Parshat Va'yigash finds the Bnai Yisrael going down to Egypt and our exile has begun. Yakov sets out with his entire family on
the last journey of his life and begins our first exile. Hashem reassures him, he is not to fear going to Egypt because, "I will go
down with you and I will bring you up as well". This is Hashem's promise for all our exiles even to this day. There is no
abandonment of Israel by Hashem regardless of our behavior. We are today witness to Hashem's largess as we live in times of
our Geulah and the rebirth of the State of Israel as our rightful inheritance and our homeland.
But first let us ponder why American Jewry has been spared the horrors and tribulations of our brothers and sisters all over the
globe and in Israel. Concentration camps and Arab warfare are known to us through newspapers, television, and the internet,
but thank G-d not from personal experience. I wonder, "Are we better or just luckier than the Jews of Europe or Israel? "Part of
the answer to this perplexing question can be found in this week's parsha of Va'Yigash.
When Yosef reveals his identity to his brothers, he reassures them of his fraternal feelings by declaring, "For Hashem did send
me before you to preserve life...to give you a remnant on the earth, to save you..." Yosef recognized that his wandering and
ultimate rise to power as the viceroy of Egypt was not by whim, but by deliberate design. He did not become Egypt's viceroy to
revel in power and luxury. He could now not ignore his brothers' plight, because he himself was spared only to help them, not
for any other reason.
Maybe this is why American Jews can and do bask in the freedom of today and yesteryear while our brothers and sisters
are/were in peril of their lives. Maybe this is why we can enjoy the fruits of American plenty while our fellow Jews elsewhere
might not know the meaning of an easy life. "To preserve life... to leave a remnant on the earth, to save..." this is perhaps the
reason we are granted our countless blessings.
We have a responsibility to our people to help in any and everyway possible. This is why we live in American exile, to help
facilitate the ingathering of our people into the land that Hashem has promised and given us. To our home, THE LAND OF
ISRAEL.
Shabbat Shalom
Rabbi Gabe Elias
