Speaker biographies Jessica W. Luther is an Austin-based writer who has emerged as a strong and compelling voice on issues related to sport, gender and violence. Luther is the author of Unsportsmanlike Conduct: College Football and the Politics of Rape, a forthcoming book for Akashic Books, and is a contributing writer for VICESports, SI.com and RH Reality Check, a reproductive health website. Luther received a Master’s Degree from UT-Austin in 2004 and a Bachelor’s Degree, Summa Cum Laude, from Florida State University in 2002. Her website is www.jessicawluther.com. Dr. Harry Edwards is Professor Emeritus of Sociology at the University of California, Berkeley and the author of Sociology of Sport and Revolt of the Black Athlete, among other works. Dr. Edwards is the architect of the Olympic Project for Human Rights, which begot the iconic Black Power salute of Tommie Smith and John Carlos at the 1968 Olympics. He is a self-styled “scholar-activist,” revolutionizing both academic and public discourse on the substance of sport and society, who has worked with numerous professional sports teams and leagues to ameliorate issues of bigotry, prejudice and inequity.
